Great location, cozy house

The house is in the perfect location with lovely views and an easy walk into town. Its cozy and comfortable with a full kitchen, great for cooking. Katrina was a great host and communicated well.

Spacious home with wonderful deck for bird watching

The property was easy access from the ferry and town. It had everything we needed. There was a mold smell from a recent flood which could be problem for some

Rakiura Holiday

Booking was simple. Communication with Katrina was easy and helpful. Being able to drop our bags off early before checkin was a great help. The house was clean and tidy. My friend was on holiday from France and found the lack of wifi a bit of a problem. Otherwise it was a great stay.

Lodging with loads of history and character

Thoroughly enjoyed the chance to stay in a well loved nautical family home with lots of area books and literature. Enjoyed looking at books on New Zealand birds and boating, and loved how the home felt, as it has clearly been part of the family and is very special. Really really appreciated being able to drop off baggage with friendly greeting before check in time which enabled us to take early ferry for arrival to maximize enjoying the day, took a trip over to Ulva island and hiked and could not have done that with our suitcases. Her recommendation for the snuggery coffee house was excellent and we went daily (sadly was closed Sunday). Well stocked for cooking. Washer AND dryer are both available which isn’t that common in New Zealand. Would totally stay again if came back to the Southland.

The house is located just up the hill from the main part of Oban, which was great. We were able to walk to and from downtown easily and we were able to walk to most of the tracks that we hiked on. The four square grocery was well stocked. The house was warm and met our basic needs. The grill didn’t have a propane tank attached to it & took us a minute to figure out how to ignite the kitchen stove; there was no guidebook or instruction to show you how to use it. There is no house phone, no Wi-Fi and if you’re international, then you had no easy way to contact the host. (Discovered WiFi at NP Visitor center.) So there were a few frustrating moments while we were at the property. We were never able to figure out how to turn on DVD player. So on a stormy night when you can’t walk into town, it was kind of a drag not to have access to some kind of entertainment. We used the time to read, so I suppose that’s a good thing.Highlights: Aurora cab company. Greg is awesome, totally worth it. He Shared stories about the area, and the cab fares were reasonable to the various tracks. It’s like getting a little tour without paying the premium prices that were charged for the various tours. Another highlight was game night at the south seas hotel pub, sit at the pool table if can join a local group. Very fun. Get a SIM card at the grocery so you can make local calls. Do water taxi to Ulva and port Williams (hike back is beautiful).

Half Moon Haven Review

We had to search to find the 3rd bedroom. It was accessed outside from the carport. It smelled like mold and the person who slept in that room said the sheets always fekt damp. The room was in desperate need of a de-humidifier. You had to go outside and then go in the house to use the bathroom . If you need 3 bedrooms, DON’T stay here. If you only need 2 bedrooms, it’s ok. Not great, but ok.

Cosy, traditional home with superb views

This is an older style property so isn’t all sleek and modern but has a 1970’s look and feel. Everything works, but don’t rely on the washing machine being available when water is low. Fantastic view of the harbour and great for bird watching from the huge picture windows. Comfortably furnished with lots of books on local Stewart island wildlife and history.

Feels like the 80s with lots of sailing and nautical stuff around. Great books to read while recovering from the tramping. Had everything we needed.

Peaceful and comfortable stay at Halfmoon Haven

Three nights stay in this comfortable older home. Just loved sitting outside and watching the beautiful wood pigeons and tui a few meters away in the trees. A short walk into the small and very friendly town of Oban. Thank you!

The birds just can't help showing off.

What a great place. A fantastic view of the harbour. Very friendly host (and her side-kick cleaner). The place is very spacious with a great kitchen. We lost count at 20 of the tuis in the trees by the house. And the kaka that came by knew he was showing off for the camera.

Cosy in the Middle of Nature

Halfmoon Haven is the perfect location to get a good overview of Steward Island. The appartment is cosy with a view into nature and has everything one needs. Chances to see a Kākā on the balkony are very high :) Communication with Katrina was pleasent and always straight forward, which we appreciated. We would definitely stay here again.
