About the host

Hosted by Annie

Host profile image
I’m Annie, your host at Hunter Valley Hideaway. Originally from the UK, I’ve called Australia home for over 25 years.
I created Hunter Valley Hideaway because I wanted to share the magic of this special place with others. I love the simple things in life: a good cup of coffee with a view, exploring the property, watching the wombats wander by, listening to the birds, and spending time with Hamish and Fergus, our Highland cow brothers who have very quickly become the unofficial managers of the farm (although their work ethic is questionable!)

I’m a little bit quirky, love a good laugh, and believe the best memories are often found in the unexpected moments, whether that’s a Highland cow coming over for a brush, a spectacular sunset over the hills, or chasing Auroras.

Hosting gives me the chance to share this beautiful piece of the Hunter Valley with guests from near and far. My aim is simple: to make you feel welcome, comfortable and completely at home while you slow down, reconnect with nature and enjoy the magic of country life.

Just a little warning though… you may arrive for the cabin, but there’s a good chance you’ll leave talking about Hamish and Fergus!

Why they chose this property

I chose this neighbourhood because it feels like a hidden pocket of the Hunter Valley where nature still sets the pace. Tucked away in Paynes Crossing, surrounded by rolling hills, native bushland, creek lines and endless skies, it’s the kind of place where you can truly slow down and breathe.

What I love most about this area is the feeling of space and tranquillity. There are no crowds, no traffic noise and no rush, just the sounds of birds in the morning, wildlife wandering through the property.

The Hunter Valley is famous for its incredible wineries, food and events, but I love that our little corner offers something different. You can spend the morning exploring a hidden trail, the afternoon visiting cellar doors, and the evening sitting by the fire watching the sunset paint the hills before looking up at a sky full of stars.

The local community has a wonderful country charm, and there is always something special about the small towns nearby, from historic Wollombi with its character and stories, to Broke with its beautiful vineyards and relaxed atmosphere.

For me, this neighbourhood is the perfect balance of adventure and escape. It’s close enough to enjoy everything the Hunter Valley has to offer, but far enough away that you can come home to peace, privacy and a little bit of farm magic.

What makes this property unique

What makes Hunter Valley Hideaway unique is that it’s more than just a place to stay — it’s an experience.

Set on 150 acres of private land, our off-grid cabins offer a rare chance to slow down, reconnect with nature and enjoy the beauty of the Australian countryside without giving up comfort. Powered by the sun and surrounded by rolling hills, native bushland and a peaceful creek, it’s a place where the days are guided by sunrise, wildlife and the changing seasons rather than the clock.

The true stars of the property are our Highland cow brothers, Hamish and Fergus. These gentle, shaggy characters have become part of the Hunter Valley Hideaway family and love meeting guests. From hand-feeding them treats and brushing their fluffy coats to capturing the perfect photo, their friendly personalities create memories that guests don’t find at a typical getaway.

Our guests can explore private walking trails, watch wombats and native birds, enjoy spectacular sunsets, gather around the fire pit, and look up at some of the clearest star-filled skies the Hunter Valley has to offer.

What makes this place special isn’t just the cabin, the views or the wildlife — it’s the feeling of being somewhere peaceful and authentic. It’s a place where you can swap busy schedules for slow mornings, notifications for birdsong, and everyday routines for a little farm magic.

Come for the off-grid luxury, stay for the serenity… and leave with stories about Hamish and Fergus.
