The Taungurung Peoples are the Traditional Owners of the land on which 187 Heathcote - Emeu Inn, lies.
We pay respect to all Yawang-yilam-bulok (stone dwelling people) past and present, and thank them for the custodianship and care for this unique place for more than 65 million years.
We celebrate the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection Aboriginal People have to our lands and waterways, and acknowledge the importance of listing and learning to promote healing and reconciliation.
Irishman Edward Brady opened the original Emeu Hotel in 1858 at the height of the goldrush.
It was one of 30 public houses operating in Heathcote as the town reached a peak population of 40,000 people.
Concerts were a regular feature in the 15mx 6m concert hall, which was considered a grand space in a settlement where most people lived in tents, makeshift housing and modest miners cottages.
The high-pitch brick building featured a saloon bar, parlours, five bedrooms, and was also granted a Billiard license. Edward Brady lived in the hotel with his wife Ann and sons James and George.
Fundraising concerts for Irish families affected by the potato famine drew large crowds to the grand hall.
Edward Brady was also a butcher and operated a store in the shopfront adjoining the Emeu Hotel. He met with tradgedy in 1874 when his horse and cart rolled over at Mia Mia on a delivery run.
The Emeu Hotel ceased operating when gold dried up, causing a mass exodus. It has operated as a boarding house, fine dining restaurant, tea rooms and wine bar. The rebranded 187 Heathcote - Emeu Inn opened in September 2022 and is undergoing a revival transition to a boutique hotel, for guests to enjoy for many years to come.
