Family-Friendly Cottage on Savary Island | Walk to the Beach
🌿 Sea La Vie Savary Cottage
Private Off-Grid Forest Retreat | Family Cottage | Savary Island
Welcome to Sea La Vie, our family cottage tucked into the trees on beautiful Savary Island.
This is a place where mornings begin with birdsong and coffee on the deck, days are spent biking quiet island roads or walking to the beach, and evenings end with long dinners surrounded by forest and the slower rhythm of island life.
Sea La Vie is not a resort or luxury rental. It is our family cottage first, and when we are not using it ourselves we share it with guests who appreciate the unique experience of Savary Island.
Rental income is largely reinvested into maintaining and improving the cottage, and like many island homes it continues to evolve over time.
The property sits on a large forest lot mid-island near Indian Point, offering privacy and space for families to relax, play games, and enjoy the natural surroundings.
Sea La Vie is best suited for families and respectful groups who appreciate nature, simplicity, and the realities of off-grid island living.
🏠 The Space
The cottage works well for families and multi-generational groups who want shared gathering areas along with private sleeping spaces.
Sleeping areas include:
• 4 bedrooms • Loft sleeping area with floor mattresses (accessed by drop-down attic staircase) • Daybed in the living room • Pull-out couch
Two bedrooms are standard size and have their own private exterior entrances, which many guests appreciate for added privacy.
Two bedrooms are smaller cozy rooms.
The loft is often a favourite with kids and teens, though the ladder staircase requires supervision for younger children.
Maximum occupancy: 10 guests total (including children and infants).
Although the cottage is set up to accommodate up to 10 guests, the base rate generally covers a smaller group size. Larger groups place greater demand on water storage, solar power, and general wear on off-grid systems, so supplemental guest charges may apply beyond a certain number of guests.
⚡ Off-Grid Living
Sea La Vie operates fully off-grid, which is part of the Savary Island experience.
The cottage runs on a small solar system (about 2000 watts with approximately 20 panels) with battery storage.
Solar power supports:
• Lighting • Telus wireless internet modem • A few outlets for charging phones and small devices
Because electricity is limited, guests should be comfortable with mindful energy use.
The following high-heat electrical appliances are not available or permitted:
• Coffee makers • Toasters • Microwaves • Space heaters • Hair dryers • Flat irons • Television
Cooking and refrigeration are provided through propane appliances, and during extended cloudy weather a supplemental generator may occasionally be used.
Guests are encouraged to bring portable battery packs or power banks for charging phones and devices.
🍳 Kitchen & Cooking
The kitchen includes:
• Two propane refrigerators • Two propane cooking ranges • Outdoor BBQ
Each refrigerator has a freezer on top and fridge below. Cooling works by cold air circulating downward from the freezer.
The ranges include a built-in toaster drawer.
For coffee, French press and stovetop percolators are provided, which work well with the propane stove.
🌐 Internet
The cottage has Telus wireless internet, suitable for email and basic browsing. Because Savary is remote, service may occasionally be intermittent.
🚲 Bikes & Getting Around
Savary Island is primarily bike and walking access, as visitor vehicles are not permitted.
The cottage has about a dozen bikes of different sizes available for guest use. These bikes are provided for convenience but are older and not new, so condition may vary.
A few helmets may be available, but guests are encouraged to bring their own helmets.
Use of bikes requires a liability release.
Guests may also:
• Bring their own bikes on the Lund water taxi • Have bikes transported by the island land taxi trucks delivering luggage • Rent bikes or e-bikes near the Savary dock
🚤 Getting to Savary
Travel to Savary typically requires a full day of travel and early planning.
Typical route:
• Ferry to Powell River • Drive to Lund • Lund water taxi to Savary • Island truck taxi for luggage and supplies
Water taxis must be booked ahead of time, especially during summer. The last departure from Lund is typically around 6 PM.
There are no visitor vehicles on Savary, so most guests walk or bike.
🛒 Groceries & Island Spots
Most guests shop in Powell River before traveling to Lund and bring groceries for the week.
Near the Savary dock you will find the general store / market.
Mid-island, after the conservation forest and closer to the cottage, you will find:
• Island Café, known for coffee and occasional evening entertainment • The Sugar Shack, a favourite stop for kids (bring cash)
🧺 Linens
Blankets and pillows are provided.
Guests bring their own:
• Sheets and pillowcases • Bath towels • Kitchen linens
Optional bedding service available for $20 per bed (laundered off-island).
Laundry must be done off-island due to water conservation.
🔥 Fire Restrictions
Savary Island is located in a very sensitive forest environment, and summer fire bans are common.
No fires of any kind are permitted on the property, including wood fires, fire pits, or propane fire pits.

📋 Guest Requirements

About the host
Hosted by Sophie
Sea La Vie is first and foremost our family cottage. Our family has spent many years enjoying Savary Island — the beaches, the quiet forest setting, and the slower pace of island life. When we are not using the cottage ourselves, we share it with guests so others can enjoy the same experience.
Rental income is largely reinvested back into the property, and the cottage continues to evolve over time as we make improvements and upgrades. Like many island homes, it is a work in progress, shaped by the realities of off-grid living and the care needed to maintain a property in a remote location.
Because this is a personal family home rather than a commercial rental, we are thoughtful about who we rent to. We look for guests whose expectations align with the nature of the property — families or groups who appreciate the island environment, respect the home, and are comfortable with the rhythms of off-grid living.
During the main summer season, bookings are Saturday to Saturday (7-night minimum) due to island logistics and cleaning availability.
Our goal is simply to share a place that is meaningful to our family with guests who will enjoy and care for it in the same spirit.
Why they chose this property
This area of Savary Island is especially quiet and family-friendly, with larger double lots that create a sense of space and privacy. The extra room makes it easy for kids to run around, play outdoor games like badminton, or simply enjoy being outside without feeling crowded.
The property sits within the forest but also has sunny open patches, decks, and gathering areas that balance shade and light throughout the day. There’s a relaxed, natural feel here — peaceful, green, and sheltered — while still being close to island favourites like the Sugar Shack and the café, both within easy reach.
The sandy roads in this part of the island tend to be less dusty, making it more comfortable for biking, walking, and everyday island life. It’s a calm, spacious setting where families can slow down, spread out, and enjoy the outdoors in a safe, easygoing environment.
What makes this property unique
Sea La Vie Savary Cottage is a handcrafted family retreat set on a rare double lot in a quiet forested area of Savary Island. The extra space allows families to spread out, play outdoor games, and enjoy both sunny open areas and shaded natural surroundings — something not commonly found on the island.
The cottage offers a flexible layout well suited for families and multi-generational groups, with four bedrooms plus a loft sleeping area. Two of the bedrooms have private exterior entrances, providing additional privacy for guests. The loft is often a favorite for kids or teens, giving them their own cozy space.
Unlike many island rentals where larger groups share sleeping areas, Sea La Vie provides separate rooms along with smaller cozy bedrooms, making week-long stays more comfortable.
The cottage also features multiple indoor and outdoor living areas, including sunny decks, porches, and outdoor seating spaces where guests can relax throughout the day. It is equipped with two refrigerators and cooking areas, which is helpful for larger groups preparing meals and storing groceries during their stay.
Sea La Vie embraces authentic off-grid island living. The home operates on a small solar power system (about 2000 watts with 20 solar panels) that supports lighting, charging devices, and basic cottage use. During extended cloudy periods, a supplemental generator may be used. Guests should be comfortable with off-grid living and mindful energy use, which is part of the Savary Island experience.
Because the system is modest, guests are encouraged to bring portable battery packs or power banks for charging phones and small devices. The cottage has Telus wireless internet, suitable for email and browsing, though service can occasionally be intermittent due to the island’s remote location.
During peak summer season, bookings run Saturday to Saturday (7-night minimum) due to island logistics and limited cleaning availability.
