The house was great - a historic home with a view that can't be beat. It was comfortable and a great place to relax. All local attractions, restaurants, and hiking were nearby. We were treated to icebergs, river otters, seals and loons. Wonderful!Lunch and dinner at the Norseman Restaurant were absolutely fantastic.
Our stay in the area was quite pleasant. Only problem was that the driveway is quite dangerous to exit. No view of street until you are already in it. Maybe install a street mirror! The fact that the laundry area was charged was a bit disappointing considering the cost of this place.
We loved Annie’s Retreat . The house was comfortable and well furnished. When we arrived there was an iceberg in the cove in front of the house. Over the next three days we watched it change and move. It wasn’t as large as the icebergs we saw on a boat tour from St. Anthony’s—but it was “our” iceberg and we loved the personal experience.
We loved staying here while we hiked in the area. Starting our stay with an iceberg out our front window wasn’t too bad either! Watching The Shipping News while there was another bonus.
This spot was a short drive to L’anse Aux Meadows. It is a spacious house on the water and had everything we needed for a family of 4. It was exactly as advertised.
This charming ocean side cottage was perfect for two couples. It was close to the historical site and a couple of restaurants. The cottage has a fully equipped kitchen and two bedrooms that overlook the ocean and icebergs!
The owners were very helpful and had helpful communication leading up to and during our stay. The cottage has a super cool history as well.
This was my favorite place out of three that we stayed in while in the Great NW peninsula of Newfoundland! The history and the old vibe of the very comfortable home, the gorgeous cove with rocks to play on and wildlife to observe. We saw a mother moose and her young one as well as otter swimming across the cove.
Dinner at the Norsemen was excellent after spending some time at the Viking settlement and the world heritage site. I would highly recommend it!

Men are 6' 1" and 6' 4" tall. There is no mention of the low beams, door ways and stair case. Opened up my scalp going to the bathroom upstairs. Septic needs to be emptied. Sinks smell awful. Sink upstairs doesn't drain.Cleaner gave us the door code. Never heard from the owner. No ice trays in the freezer. Suggestion was search in another building up the road.Loved the location but its an old tired home.Cool that Annie Proulx wrote novels from there.

We clean out septic system every fall. It was a busy season this year. we kept the historic structures character and couldn’t possible change it, I did change information to include beams are low at door facings , going up stairs and middle beam in house. We have done so much to the houses ; new windows, new roofed, new siding , new patios , new boardwalks to beach , new bathroom fixtures and flooring. It’s a house from the late 1800’s , historically the low door frames would have been a thing because people weren’t so tall back then . I did send you messages with code and how to check in , not sure why you didn’t get it!
We really enjoyed our stay at this quaint and cosy rental, once belonging to author Annie Proulx... the cottage is nicely located near several trails and restaurants, with a great view of the water, and is exceptionally quiet and peaceful... we especially liked finding a bedroom and a full bathroom on the ground floor, which meant we didn't have to go upstairs at all (although we did go up just once to check it out)... the wifi and all the appliances worked without a hitch, we appreciated the night light in the bathroom, the beside lights for reading, and a good selection of local books... there are lots of dishware and cookware, as well as dishtowels, towels, etc. We can't think of anything else one might need! One word of caution, however, if you're six feet tall (or taller), the low beamed ceilings should probably dissuade you from choosing the Blue House. Our lunch at the Norseman restaurant was tasty and our waitress was very sweet.
This is one lovely home - we enjoyed our stay. The location is fantastic, the home has a ton of character and charm and was well stocked with everything we needed. Just watch your head if over 6’ - some of the doorways and ceilings are low :) We would recommend this home to anyone looking to explore the beautiful Northern Peninsula. Thanks!

We loved our stay. The location is beautiful right on the water, surrounded by grassy meadows and wildflowers. We enjoyed making breakfast with the items left for us. The home is charming! Beds were cozy and house nice and clean. Low ceilings are part of the charm but being tall folks we had to watch our heads going through the doors! We had a great visit to the Viking village and beautiful lunch at the Norsemen restaurant as well. It is a long drive out there but worth it!
This was a lovely cottage stay and we hope to go back. I saw a humpback breach in the distance as I sipped my morning tea. The kids enjoyed finding sea glass on the rock beach. The boardwalk path needs updating and the back porch step needed addressing, which the property owner was very receptive too and was going to fix after our departure. The kids loved the jet tub and I loved the fresh air coming into the cabin at night. Beds were comfortable. Perfect for our stay.
We stayed in Annie's Retreat (the blue house - there are two) in August 2023.
Pros:
-- Beautiful location, secluded
-- Clean, roomy (for a single 3-person family) house, well-heated
-- Easy check-in, responsive host
-- Convenient to dining, L'Anse Aux Meadows
Cons:
-- Squeaky main floor bedframe
-- Deck has holes from rotted wood
Good to know:
-- No dishwasher
-- Laundry in separate building on property, $3.50CAD/load
-- Steep driveway to access

We are happy you enjoyed your stay.We hope you do come back someday. My husband said he fixed the problems you mentioned.
We stayed at this location in the Blue House this June for 4 nights. While staying there, we saw a huge iceberg which was there for all 4 days. The locals said it was several miles long. We also were sitting on the deck on the back of the house and watch whales in the cove. We had a moose that visited every day and a couple of very cute bunnies. We stayed as two couples so this was a perfect place with two floors and two bathrooms. The kitchen had everything we needed but was a bit disorganized.
While there, we visited local sites such as the Viking Village and St Anthony.
The house is secluded and peaceful. I hated to leave.
The location has great historical ties ("Annie's retreat") and if you are looking for a family friendly accommodation that has a cottage feel, or just something different and private, this is a great rental. We absolutely loved it!If you're more attentive to details, the following is my full review:PROS* Great host* Semi private beach. The waterfront is spectacular!* Gorgeous location & super convenient for northern activities (Viking village, zodiak boat tour, ...), and access to St. Anthony.* Clear check in instructions * Rustic and charming house* Spacious bedrooms* Games and DVD's available in the house* We slept well.CONSThe grounds felt a little neglected: We were there End of August; weeds had taken over the wooden pathway, and tons of mosquitoes. Cleanliness: We had to do some cleaning of our own in the first minutes upon our arrival. The furniture has seen better days. The couch should be replaced or re re-upholstred. It feels dirty, and worn out.The ceiling is really low on the main floor. No smart TV. Just cable.Although charming and rustic, the house needs a good dose of TLC and better wormanship.SUMMARYAt the price point we paid, I expected a higher quality accommodation. But, we enjoyed the accommodation and ourselves nonetheless.
