About this property

Stenhuset: Stunning Historic "1877 Stone House"

At the intersection of yesterday and today lies the unapologetically unique and Stenhuset. Meaning "Stone House'' in Swedish, Stenhuset is bursting with modern-day amenities, while retaining its historic 19th-century charm. Built in 1877 by Swedish stonemasons, this historic home embraces its Swedish heritage, as does Lindsborg itself, with celebrations of all kinds: Hyllningsfest, Midsummer, even a Swedish Luau in January! Throughout the year, Lindsborg finds many reasons to celebrate, so celebrate with us!

Utterly charming and with a one-of-a-kind vibe, the Stenhuset house is the ideal accommodation for travelers who choose the road less taken. History buffs will swoon over its intricate period details. Stenhuset is proudly listed on Atlas Obscura! Designed by Victoria Freeman, Stenhuset was awarded a listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

As you approach this most unique property with its 24-inch-thick stone walls (think of a small castle), you may notice inscriptions in the three stone lintels over the front door and two windows. In 1877 stonemasons chiseled Bible verses in Old Swedish into three stone lintels above the front door and two side windows.

Enter the front door and find yourself falling back into history! The open concept, yet cozy, great room oozes with the welcoming charm of yesteryear with exposed stone walls, beamed ceilings, and hand-hewn wood floors.

A colorful and eclectic kitchen provides all the modern amenities for today's travelers, including a 4-burner cooktop, convection oven/microwave, coffee maker and coffee grinder too. You'll find both the refrigerator and the dishwasher hidden behind unusual repurposed cabinetry.

The living/dining area offers a cozy table for two or more, period furnishings, and a pop-up Smart TV to stream all your favorite shows with the included Gigabit-speed WiFi - we provide Hulu+Live TV with no ads. A nearby chest of drawers cleverly conceals a Murphy bed.

Towards the back door of the home on this first level is a bath with an oval step-in shower and simply stunning multi-colored hand-hewn wood floors. The stacked washer/dryer is just steps away, smartly hidden behind a screen door.

As you descend the stairs to the lower level, you will be greeted by an original plaster wall with original, intact stencils. Continue on to a large bedroom suite with a king size Casper mattress and separate private seating area, complete with side table for your book or to charge your device. This suite has plenty of space for all your belongings and features a Smart TV. The en suite bath features an upcycled dresser as the vanity and another oval walk-in shower.

The second bedroom suite is nestled upstairs in the loft, also offering a king-size Casper mattress. A spacious seating area overlooks the first floor of the home, with a sofa and a chair and ottoman.

Each of the two ensuite baths features an upcycled dresser as the vanity with a semi-circular walk-in shower in one and a commode in the other.

While decorated in the grandmillenial style, the all-electric Stenhuset defines carbon-free sustainability. The original 24-inch-stone walls efficiently keep the outdoor temperatures where they belong – outdoors. The interior is heated and cooled with high-efficiency electric heat pumps, often called minisplits. Water for the showers, sinks and laundry is warmed with electric water heaters, again integrated with heat pumps. Appliances are Energy Star cerftified and plumbing fixtures minimize water consumption. The "cedar split" shingles on the roof were formed from recycled milk jugs. And if you drive and arrive with an electric vehicle, we can provide an EV charger with advance notice.

On a pleasant day or evening, enjoy your time outdoors over a cup of coffee, glass or wine, or a full meal at the teak dining table for 6 under a hand-hewn pergola.

Prior to arrival, guests are provided with an entry code that will unlock the front and back doors. Be sure to lock the doors each time you leave Stenhuset.

Contact information is provided near the telephone. Our intent is to leave guests alone to enjoy Lindsborg and central Kansas, unless you really need us.

Hello, my name is Jim. As you may have guessed, I am a big fan of Lindsborg, KS for its friendly townsfolk and business owners. Perhaps also because, according to DNA test results, I’m 80% Swedish!
I was the first vacation rental owner in the area and my properties began as a kind of experiment to see if they would catch on. Fortunately, they did and my properties are now warmly embraced by the local community.
While I don’t live in Lindsborg, I have been welcomed into the community as a “local” who just happens to live elsewhere.
When I’m not tending to my vacation rentals, you will find me working in my commercial real estate business, where I own and rent commercial spaces for small businesses and apartments for local residents.
In my leisure time, I particularly enjoy genealogy (not a big surprise there!), traveling, and hiking.
I look forward to welcoming you to my properties in Little Sweden USA!

Why they chose this property

This property was purchased, with two others, as an experiment to see if guests would vacation in Lindsborg, KS. The experiment was a success!
