Fantastic view, home itself needs lots of TLC
This was our 12th year taking our family on vacation to Avon. We have been renting a different house each year (not always by choice) and therefore have a pretty good idea of what a decent rental should look like. The location of Blue Waters was truly amazing with its completely unobstructed view of the sound and so much fascinating wildlife in the tall grasses surrounding it!
Before getting into details of this property, I would like to acknowledge that everyone has different expectations, making some of my criticism subjective and mostly based on personal preferences. But some of the issues were plainly unacceptable.
We loved that this property had en-suite bathrooms in all their bedrooms. Spending vacations with your older children usually entails bringing along their partners. The privacy this layout offered was perfect. Sadly, there were hardly any blankets in the house, other than the bedspreads. Luckily, most of us had brought their own blankets, so this wasn’t an issue for us.
The house was also clean and neat on the surface. Whoever prepared the house certainly put in a lot of TLC when they placed the towels and toiletries in the bathrooms and prepared the beds. It looked very welcoming.
The pool was clean (not so much the lawn chairs) and the deck size was suffice for a large family to hang out together. The living room had a very nice library, filled with science books on a plethora of topics which we all enjoyed very much.
Now, for the not so pleasant things.
What was clearly unacceptable was the cockroach problem. We found several in the bedrooms at our time of arrival, and positively identified them as the ‘American Cockroach’, which infests homes, and which is completely different from water roaches, which are harmless. We bought traps and caught quite a few during our stay, but were very worried that we would inadvertently bring some of them home with our luggage.
When we looked for a dish brush under the kitchen sink, we found a two gallon mixing bowl wedged underneath the drain pipes, filled to the rim with fowl smelling water. Luckily, my husband is handy and was able to temporarily join the pipes with surgical tape we had in our first aid kit. This was definitely unacceptable and should have been caught by management during inspection!
Being that the shore is a sandy place, even with the best precautions you will be dragging some sand into the house. But there were no brooms to be found anywhere, not even a dustpan! This made it impossible to keep the place tidy, and you always felt sand under your feet which was quite frustrating.
The open kitchen was super small with only one narrow cabinet for food storage. The combined counter space was barely 9’ long which allowed only 1 to 2 people in the kitchen at a time. While the two dishwashers came in very handy and worked well, the oven hardly worked at all. It took us an hour to heat up a frozen pizza. The refrigerator was nice and had a good capacity, and there were
