About this property

The HIdeout at Palo Duro Canyon - Rider’s Roost

RARE FIND AT PALO DURO CANYON! Rider’s Roost at The Hideout at Palo Duro Canyon offers guests over 6 acres of peace and quietude, yet the convenience of being right next to the state park, zip line, Jeeping tours and horseback riding. You don’t want to miss out on this gem which has quickly become a destination on most travelers’ bucket list.
There are two cabins on our sprawling 6.5 acres ( See also the Hideout at Palo Duro Canyon- Buffalo Lodge, which sleeps an additional 4 guests). A bottle of wine awaits, so you can relax and unwind!

NOTE: This rental is not suitable for children under age 12.

We are family owned, with no corporate marketing tools to lure you in. Just simple Texas hospitality at it’s finest! We offer our guests the opportunity to travel back in time to the true spirit of the old west, complete with horses, a wild-eyed goat, and our rooster, Nigel.

We are closer to the state park than any other vacation rentals, truly! The floor plan is spacious with comfortable beds (no sofa beds to pull out), and no crowding. There are two dining tables, one inside and another on the screened in porch, so you can enjoy your BBQ on the screened porch. We also offer a 2-car carport, as Texas panhandle weather can be unpredictable with hail storms in the summer and ice storms in the winter!

Built within a horse stable, the upstairs has a 700 square foot room with 2 queen beds (2 additional roll away beds available upon request), and a large living area with sofa, two recliners, a 46 inch Smart TV, and Netflix. Downstairs enjoy a 150 square foot saloon style kitchenette furnished with a table that seats 4, a microwave, coffee pot, egg cooker, microwave bacon tray, crockpot, toaster, small sink and mini fridge. Open the double French doors to a 24x14 deck with fire pit, camper cook stove, gliding sofa, two rocking chairs, cooler, BBQ grill and large dining table. There is also a full bathroom with a large walk-in shower.

Notice:
This is a horse stable on a small farm. Farm animals make funny sounds, smell bad and have sex outdoors. Unless you can tolerate noise, odors and outdoor sex, this rental may not be for you.

You will love watching birds and local wildlife here at the Hideout. You may see songbirds, hawks, great horned owls, road runners, quail, deer, aoudads, feral hogs, bobcats, fox, and be serenaded by coyotes. Stunning sunrises and sunsets are included!

If you're in the mood to explore, Palo Duro Canyon State Park is right there, and the entrance to this “Grand Canyon of Texas" is just a mile further up the road. Visitors explore by car, hiking, horseback, and bike (best mountain biking around). Right by the Park are Palo Duro Zip Line Adventures, Palo Duro Creek Ranch Jeeping tours, and Palo Duro Riding Stables. The musical drama TEXAS shows in the park’s outdoor amphitheater June through mid-August and is a must see! Let us know if we can assist you with planning any of these activities. We’re here to help and want your stay to be enjoyable and memorable.

It’s about a fifteen minute jaunt to the city of Canyon where you’ll find the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum (the largest historical museum in the state of Texas). For restaurants, shopping, nightlife and live music, it’s about a half hour to Amarillo. Find cultural and sporting events, the famous Old Route 66, and the Cadillac Ranch (don’t forget to bring a can of spray paint). If you prefer to dine in Canyon, there are several great restaurants on the town square, such as Canyon Ranch Steak House, Sayakamaryns and Palace Coffee. Bar Z Winery and Creek House Honey Farm are also near by.

Additional services include concierge, and equestrian visitors. Fees for additional services vary, so contact us about your needs.

Spring Break!
Rider's Roost was a delightful place. The cabin was clean and cozy, just as described. We enjoyed being next to the barn and meeting the horses and the new goats, Pearl and Danny-boy. They were often under the carport greeting us when we returned from our excursions. The screened-in porch was perfect for an early morning coffee or a game of cards in the evening. Andrea included fresh chicken eggs and cream for our coffee. Her book collection on the area was so interesting. The guides and flyers were very helpful. The natural beauty of Palo Duro was majestic and it was wonderful being so close to the canyon. I would highly recommend Rider's Roost if you like animals, nature and a very quiet place to stay. Andrea is also a fabulous photographer and had some lovely cards for sale. An added bonus. Hope to return again! Thank you, Andrea.

Rustic Luxury
For a visit to the Palo Duro State Park, I don't think you can find a more convenient location except maybe in the park. Considering the Roost is part of a horse stable, it is very clean and comfortable! The downstairs has very limited seating in a smallish kitchen but makes up for it with a very nice screened in patio for relaxing. Where you can listen to the cackle of the chickens and the nickers of the horses The bedroom is upstairs with a nice sitting area for reading, writing or watching TV. But the bathroom is downstairs which provided a bit of a challenge at night. Also, when I say rustic, there are pelts of various creatures on the handrails which my wife found a little off putting when having to go downstairs to go to the bathroom. Didn't bother me but if you don't like stuffed animals in your living quarters, I suggest you find something else.

Beautiful Getaway!
This is the perfect retreat! So comfortable and roomy, with all the comforts of home. We took our daughter to Palo Duro Canyon for her birthday trip, but this cabin and the surrounding nature turned out to be the highlight of our trip! We absolutely loved the old west décor with all the modern accommodations, definitely a one of a kind experience! Our hostess was so kind, and went the extra mile to make our stay a happy family memory.

Rustic Getaway for Animal Lovers
Needed a cabin for a short notice trip to Palo Duro. This is a small country cabin on a working horse ranch, so naturally there are a few guidelines to follow and keep in mind throughout your stay. The cabin is well kept and perfectly appointed with just the right amount of amenities to make you feel at home and welcome.
