Located in Mathias, this guesthouse is in a rural area and in the mountains. Edinburg Mill Museum and Meems Bottom Covered Bridge are local landmarks, and some of the area's activities can be experienced at Bryce Ski Resort and Cave Ridge Vineyard. Mt Jackson Thrift & Gift and Showalter Orchard & Greenhouse are also worth visiting. Take the opportunity to explore the area for outdoor excitement like hiking.
The Yurt at Solar Solitude sits behind the barn, and the 8.4 acres Solar Solitude occupies is available for exploring. The adjacent George Washington National Forest is ideal for hiking, and the Lost River State Park is just minutes away. Sit in the living room and enjoy the quiet beauty of nature while feeling the warmth from the wood stove or gaze up at the stars through the dome, or out on the expansive deck. WIFI works well for those who prefer to stay connected and/or telework! Enjoy walking the new walking paths and the waterfall and pond! The Solar Cottage on the property is occasionally occupied. , make sure you do not leave children unattended in the yard during the summer. Temperatures can get pretty high. Also, it’s a clamping experience so the air conditioner won’t really do much in the heat of summer so I recommend you plan day trips during the heat of the summer day.

Had a great stay- very thorough check-in and instructions, yurt was super cool. To be out in the country and still have wi-fi and a shower was right up my alley. Fridge, appliances, and peace and quiet. Owner was very responsive and friendly as well. Loved it!
Book it. You won’t regret it! This was a solo trip for me to travel around the area mountain biking. The place itself has everything you need and it really unique. Awesome property to relax on and the surrounding areas are beautiful to wake up to.
My spouse and I spent the weekend at the Yurt . Everything was perfect . We had a lot of rain but it didn’t stop us . We hiked the state park , we had coffee outside in the morning and we took long walks on the property. We enjoyed the wildlife and the area . We will be back again .
Those 2 words sum up our stay. We couldnt have asked for a better Autumn get away to recharge, slightly :) unplug, enjoy the beautiful views and listen to the sweet sounds of cows mooing! Great host and great space! Cant wait to book it again!
We enjoyed our stay immensely. The yurt was well set up for every need we might have had. The bed was one of the most comfortable we ever slept in. We had a couple of small hiccups because of the cold weather but our host addressed them immediately and resolved them.
We loved staying here. It was a fun and different property in a beautiful location. My only complaint is that some dishes were not clean. Other than that, everything was amazing, and I would recommend this place to anyone considering it.
Enjoyed our stay! Overall a fantastic property. Really fun and unique place and as advertised, however firepit area could use a trim. Bed was comfortable, and pullout was comfy as well. Able to work remotely and had no trouble, We enjoyed grilling on the deck and the solostove for smores in evenings!
Solar solitude is more than just a yurt, it has beautiful floors, a well appointed kitchen, beautiful bathroom, and a skylight for stargazing. Set in a peaceful, quiet neighborhood you can get back to nature in style. Russell is an attentive host and responds to any inquiry quickly.
Every was nice a clean when we arrived. The only thing i can give any kind of criticism to is the air conditioning. It way under powered. If we were to have rented in the dead of summer, I would have been upset do the fact of it ran all the time and cooled it off by maybe 10 degrees. There were time where it was cooler outside than inside.
My husband and I had a very nice time at this location. We got our quiet in, it's in a very nice location, and what an experience in a yurt! The host was incredibly responsive. I would only take this experience in if I had no mobility issues, as the main bed is up some steep steps. We appreciated all of the heating and cooling needs the host has put in the yurt, as some we have seen and experienced have little of these accommodations. A great place to stay in and around the Lost City area of West Virginia!
Glad we had at least one clear night to see the stars. An extremely unique experience in a very private location. Being in a circular living space felt so big! The place is appointed well, with just the right amount of items to make the stay comfortable. But hard to remember we were really not indoors and it is best to venture out in the hottest part of the day.
It was awful, so hot and humid. It’s false advertisement on the AC part because when I stayed it was 85+ degrees, fans half ass worked and place had dead BUGS everywhere even on the bed. I even woke up to a roach laying on the floor by the bathroom. The grill is ONLY charcoal and would not light no matter how much lighter fluid you used. I’d do no stars but it’s impossible unfortunately. DO NOT STAY HERE
My husband and I totally loved our stay in the Yurt. Russell was an amazing host and got back to me within minutes if I had any questions. It had all the amenities of home but the feeling of being close to nature. The yurt sits on a lot of land and our dogs loved exploring. The only thing I will say is the stairs up to the bed are quite tricky and my husband's older knees struggled a bit. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants the experience of "glamping".
The yurt is incredible. The structure itself is very cool, but it's set amongst several pastures to walk through with your dog in the morning listening to birdsong and cows and during the magic hour in the evening. It has everything you could need; this is luxury glamping! Russ is so nice and responsive and helpful. Lost River State Park and George Washington National Forest are a few turns away. There's nothing nicer than sitting on the deck with a drink and watching the birds and the baby cows across the way in the afternoons. The pup and I had the most wonderful time and we will absolutely be back!
Very cool experience. A cozy Yurt. I would stay again. Would love to see the property when it’s complete.
To unwind before and after exploring, I recommend taking a light-weight TV with you. We did and it was the perfect decision. Take your own amenities. The kitchen desperately needs an updated Brita (or Brita like) pitcher. Stairs to the top level bed are super dicey - I imagine that’s a Yurt situation across the board.
The owner (hello!) did say he might be there at the adjoining cottage doing work, and maybe he was but it was impossible to know because at least 3 men showed up Tuesday and stayed the whole day, night, and into the next day- our last morning there.
It did not sit well with us that men were working well into the late night/early morning (midnight, 1am etc.) while we were unwinding and sleeping. One professing he stays at the Yurt often… maybe he had a spare key we knew nothing about. Anyways, for safety & ease I wouldn’t have multiple people out at the property burning debris and other types of manual labor while the Yurt is being occupied.
2 pints of ice cream were left in the freezer - enjoy!!!
We had an absolutely wonderful time over our long weekend at the yurt. Its a very nice space, good to experience living in a circle, and set on a hillside in a very quiet valley. There was a very lively cow heard across the way making thier opinions known, whom we cnamed collectively "Stadler & Waldorf". It is an largely uninsulated tent, so thermalregulation is an active process, and the wifi was put during our stay. I will also reccomend bringing a hand saw, as there is firewood to burn but the stove in the yurt is too small for narmal log sizes.
The lofted bed, skylight, and fabric construction make for a fully immersive experience. Nearly our whole stay was rain, but the play of the rain and wind on the hut was loads of fun.
Definitely reccomend the space.
My husband and I came to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We were blown away! We chose this spot because we thought it would be cool to stay in a yurt, we didn’t know what exactly to expect, but the pictures looked nice! We arrived and were pleasantly surprised at the fact that it is truly in the middle of nowhere (EXACTLY what we wanted). The yurt was gorgeous, super spacious, CLEAN, and felt like home. We enjoyed having breakfast and dinner outside on the deck, listening to the rain fall on the roof, watching the stars from bed, and listening to the sounds of nature (and cows!) in the early morning when we woke up. Also, we enjoyed all of the games!! We played lots of Zuni and LOTS of Scrabble!!
I highly recommend
- taking the hike to Cranny Crow in Lost River State Park
- Lost River Grill for a close by restaurant
- fishing the stream at Howard’s Lick trail for brook trout at Lost River State Park
- Taking an evening in Moorefield to see a movie and have dinner (and dessert!) at Oneills
- Taking at least an afternoon and evening staying in and just enjoying the yurt and the peacefulness!
Thank you, Russell!!
