🌃 Colmar: A city to enjoy without moderation!
For Georges Duhamel (who wrote it in 1931), Colmar was the "most beautiful city in the world"... It has also often been said to be the most Alsatian of Alsatian cities!
Without going into the exaggeration of superlatives, Colmar remains undoubtedly a truly exceptional city due to the richness and variety of its historical and architectural heritage.
It is located close to Germany and Switzerland, between the Vosges Mountains and the Rhine River, Strasbourg and Mulhouse. The city offers visitors a striking shortcut to more than a thousand years of European history. Moreover, with its 67,000 inhabitants, Colmar retains the charm of a "country town," which gives it all its appeal.
Despite the twists and turns of a turbulent history, the city has managed to preserve an exceptional homogeneity of its historic centre, which, classified as a "protected sector," has undergone continuous restoration and enhancement. The large pedestrian zone in the old town allows visitors to admire the countless treasures of a heritage as rich as it is varied, spanning from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
Whether it’s the Maison des Têtes (built in the early 17th century) which owes its name to the 111 heads adorning its façade, or the Maison Pfister, a beautiful bourgeois Renaissance mansion with a medieval design, each of its monuments is unique in its kind.
Colmar's religious art is also very rich: the Dominican Church, which houses the famous "Virgin with the Rose Bush" by the Alsatian painter and engraver Martin Schongauer, as well as the Collegiate Church of Saint Martin, are wonderful examples of pure and sober Gothic art with great austerity.
Wandering through the streets, the amazed visitor discovers the many beautiful signs, the brightly coloured roofs... Strolling along the Quai de la Poissonnerie, once the nerve centre of fishing and fish selling, one falls under the charm of this picturesque district, now called "Little Venice."
