Come visit and see our gorgeous 2024 room renovations! Beds, furnishings, art, decor - everything is ALL NEW. The amazing ocean front view remains the same ;-)

Hale Kai Hawaii Suites offers four oceanfront rooms (booked individually) and a spectacular, panoramic view of the blue Pacific Ocean and Hilo Bay. We overlook the popular Honolii surfing beach in a peaceful location just 2 miles north of historic Hilo Town. Revel in the best views in Hilo while at our pool and oceanfront lanai!

The Heritage Room offers a queen bed, private bathroom with shower, WiFi, SMART TV, small fridge/freezer, microwave, coffee maker, hot water pot, toaster, dishes and utensils, ceiling and portable fans, no air conditioning, and sliding door to lanai. Continental breakfast items are stocked daily and we invite all guests to swim in the pool or lounge on the oceanfront lanai.

A few NOTES: One parking spot is provided per room in this quiet residential neighborhood. All Guest Rooms are facing the ocean on the lower level of the property and there are over 30 steps down (pictured) to traverse to the rooms. Guests are responsible for carrying their luggage to their rooms. Bookings limited to 2 guests per room (including children). Quiet hours are 9pm to 8am for the comfort of all of our guests, Mahalo!

While at Hale Kai (House on the Ocean) Hawaii, enjoy watching surfers, dolphins, and seasonal humpback whales during their annual migration to the Hawaiian Islands from the north Pacific. Refreshing Oceanside getaway!

Excellent and we would definitely return. Our room looked out at the ocean which was wonderful! Very clean and helpful staff. The breakfast provided to your room was a nice touch! Mahalo! See you on a future trip!

My husband and I spent 2 nights in early March in this lovely room which was part of a large home overlooking the ocean. We were pleasantly surprised with fresh breakfast items for every morning and watched whales spouting from our terrace. Amazing.

Lovely Small Hilo Room

Nice location with beautiful view, clean small room and bath, tricky on a hill parking, nice shower, breakfast was good, could be warm with no air conditioning, no cross ventilation.

Generous, clean, beautiful

Last time I stayed in Hilo was at a local hotel; which was mediocre, at best. This space was half the price and has breathtaking views right from your room, whales breaching daily during our visit, generous breakfast with fresh fruit oatmeal milk coffee yoghurt and muffins daily (with Hawaii grocery prices I would est $50 daily value), and the neighborhood felt safe. It was also cleaner than the Hilton we stayed at the night prior- even the baseboards were dust free. Lack of air conditioning wasn’t an issue with the ocean breeze and provided fan. Pool was chilly but refreshing after hiking about, and the hot tub was lovely once we figured out the tricks for getting it started. We would gladly stay here again!

The pool area needs maintenance and a lot more attention. Lots of debris from the landscaping and that is okay, but it needs more frequent maintenance. We cleaned up the pool ourselves and enjoyed the swimming! The hot tub does not work and needs lots of maintenance! Otherwise, we enjoyed the view and watched whales right from the lanai!

Highlight was on several days watching a mother whale and young one breaching and frolicking in the ocean. Better than our whale watching trip in Kona. Also saw about 30 to 40 spinnner dolphins passing by our patio. However big drawback was the parking space. Very difficult to maneuver when all the spaces were full. If you are elderly, this would make me reconsider staying here.

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: It was terrible overall. The walls of the rooms were very thin, if there was anything. The internet never worked and they didn't fix it despite our complaints. It should be prohibited to advertise that you have internet if it doesn't work. They only gave us breakfast for the first 2 days, the rest of the time we were hungry in the morning. Expensive and I don't recommend it at all!!!

Charming Place to Stay in Hilo

The location was perfect for exploring north of Hilo or driving into downtown. One word that comes to mind on this property is CHARMING. There is a lot of charm at this property. The grounds, the vegetation, the flowers, the studio room, the pool. All of it was charming. The only small change I would make is to enhance the continental breakfast. It was fine and did the job each morning, but a little more substance might help. For example, instead of yogurt in a container, how about a yogurt parfait with granola and berries added? Just a way to make the items presented a little extra. Besides this small change, there is not much else that this CHARMING property needs. It was a real pleasure to stay here and listen to the ocean at night. If I am ever in Hilo again, Hale Kai will be hearing from me.

Great location for surfers as there is a view of the break. Reaching the break requires a car, though it's close enough to see waves and those riding them. The room was clean. Breakfast was yummy and shifted to meet dietary issues. Place is close to town for shopping and restaurants. We'll be back. This room is the smallest and we'll likely choose bigger for next time.

I loved the location and the view from our room. Whale watching was my favorite part of the stay. The room was not bad. There were not enough towels for 2 people. The hair conditioner was plugged up. They did bring a bring a bottle of condtioner. What I didnt like was the bent sliding door that wouldnt close or lock. Lots of ants got into out pizza on the inside table. The internet would not work and was very bad most of our stay. On the upside we were compted one night.. The pool was cleaned the day we were leaving. Parking was difficult on the hill for an SUV. The really good for handicapped person on oxygen or wherlchair due to the steps to get to the room. They do mention steps on the advertisement. The management company did try very hard to fix the issues we had. Even with all the problems I would stay at this location again.

You are paying for the ocean view! No AC!

Positives- Beautiful location and ocean view. Well kept property! Clean! Mini fridge in room was stocked daily with muffins, fruit, eggs and yogurt. Coffee supplied in room was very good. Negatives- I’m sure I overlooked the fact that this place did not have AC, so my fault…but wow was it brutal! We slept with door open and fan.. top sheet, the sound of wind woke us up all night every night. Pillows were really flat and bed extremely soft. My husband is basically a professional driver, and he was surprised how difficult the parking was. 1 spot at a very tight angel that you have to do a 3 point turn to get in and out of on a very steep incline. I never reached out to property manager as we were on the go everyday! But met upon arrival room attendant and she was very friendly! We wouldn’t stay here again only due to no AC.

Perfect for couples. Ocean front unit. Beautiful way to see the amazing Hilo sunrise. They provided fresh fruit, coffee, muffins and snack bar. My husband and I enjoyed our visit to Hilo. Very safe neighborhood. We got dinner to go and had our dinner in our oceanfront unit.
