Come visit and see our gorgeous 2024 room renovations! Beds, furnishings, art, decor - everything is ALL NEW. The amazing ocean front view remains the same ;-)

Hale Kai Hawaii Suites offers four oceanfront rooms (booked individually) and a spectacular, panoramic view of the blue Pacific Ocean and Hilo Bay. We overlook the popular Honolii surfing beach in a peaceful location just 2 miles north of historic Hilo Town. Revel in the best views in Hilo while at our pool and oceanfront lanai!

The Pele Suite offers a garden view bedroom with California king bed and separate ocean view sitting room with a Hawaiian style loveseat, table and chairs, kitchenette (portable one burner cooktop, microwave, small fridge/freezer, coffee maker, hot water pot, dishes, utensils, pots and pans), WiFi, SMART TV, private bathroom with shower, ceiling fans, portable fan, no air conditioning, and sliding door to lanai. Please note: Sitting room has ocean view, bedroom has view of small walkway garden. Continental breakfast items are stocked daily and we invite all guests to swim in the pool or lounge on the oceanfront lanai.

A few NOTES: One parking spot is provided per room in this quiet residential neighborhood. All Guest Rooms are facing the ocean on the lower level of the property and there are over 20 steps down (pictured) to traverse to the rooms. Guests are responsible for carrying their luggage to their rooms. Bookings limited to 2 guests per room (including children). Quiet hours are 9pm to 8am for the comfort of all of our guests, Mahalo!

While at Hale Kai (House on the Ocean) Hawaii, enjoy watching surfers, dolphins, and seasonal humpback whales during their annual migration to the Hawaiian Islands from the north Pacific. Perfect home base for our travels

Beautiful sunrise views, enough amenities to feel comfortable, and great access to that part of the island. The breakfast items were incredibly helpful! We would stay here again when back in Hilo!

Great week long stay on the Big Island!

We chose to spend our entire week with Pele at Hale Kai as our center of operations; couldn’t have been more pleased. Comfortable accommodations, great breakfasts provided, easy access to everything in Hilo, and a fantastic setting. Would do it again without hesitation.

We loved sitting out on the lanai each morning watching the surfers and geckos. Small issue with the sliding screen door being off its tracks and rickety. We informed our contact at Salt Water and maintenance came out and fixed it during our stay. We were a little concerned about no AC in July, but the ceiling fans kept it cool enough while we were there. Overall we had a lovely stay and would return.

Everything was great! It was our second time and we really enjoyed the extra space of the Pele suite! Conveniently located beautiful ocean view great pool and hot tub very clean... easy check in and great communication. Also free daily continental bfast!

The Pele suite at this property was as pictured on VRBO. Great access to Hilo and all Puna district and Hamakua coastline. The communication with the on island management, (Saltwater Vacations) could have been better regarding a couple of issues during the stay.

Wonderfull place and environnement

Everythig was perfert : the view, the patio deck, the food for the breakfast, the pool, the flowers, the birds, the geckos,…. The only thing that you can do is to add air conditionning in the bedroom but we had enough fresh air to sleep with the popi !!,

Great 2 night stay

Great location to do a few days of site seeing around Hilo. Pool and hot tub were great. Enjoyed the views of the surfers from the balcony. While it was not hot and we were comfortable, I did miss the ac. Since we were not hanging out all day at the condo it worked perfect for a base for all we needed to do. The sunrises were amazing. I don’t have any objections to recommending anyone to stay here.

It is not an entirely private porch since the walkway to the 3 other suites runs between our sliding glass door and the porch, but the only traffic would be another guest leaving or arriving for the day. Very minimal. The suite was simple and clean, nothing fancy, it was great. The views to the ocean and Hilo were what it was all about. Thanks for a great stay!

Great Views and cozy accomodations

The property is very nice and cozy. Not fancy, but very workable and clean. Appreciated the daily breakfast muffins and the coffee. View from the patio is great and the pool is just big enough to cool off. The hot tub was set way too high at 104, so we did not use it. The bed was comfy. Overall a great place to stay for the value. Aloha

We stayed in the Pele suite and loved every minute of our stay. The view from our room was great, we saw whales every day and surfers catching the big ones. The breakfasts with the fresh fruit and muffins every morning was really a treat. If we return to Hilo we would definitely stay there again.

Quiet Hilo stay

Lovely spot to stay for a few nights. Panoramic view of Hilo bay. Saw lots of Humpbacks breaching and blowing spouts half way out to horizon and spinner dolphins. Good to have binoculars with us. All this whist sitting on our own little deck having breakfast provided by Annie who was very helpful. Apartment is small but plenty space for two guests. Bathroom is cruise ship style but works out ok. Couple miles out of town so need a car. Have own car park spot but is steep drive and awkward parking but doable with a bit of manoeuvring.

Place was smaller than expected, tiny bathroom but has essentials. Overall comfortable. Amazing continental breakfast (fruit, muffins, hard-boiled eggs, milk) delivered fresh each day. Kitchnette has a plug-in stove and pans, which was handy. They also offer tea and coffee/coffee maker. Since the public path to get to other units is just outside the unit, there's little privacy. The loveseat could also use an update (not very comfortable). For a few days, this worked well for exploring Hilo and surroundings.

Small kitchenette has everything you need to cook a meal, store things in the fridge, etc. Quick 5 min drive to-from Hilo. Staff come daily with continental breakfast supplies (incl milk, fruit, muffins, ground coffee and filters) , and will replace towels,etc if requested. Maintenance via text was very responsive. One issue - hot tub was no longer functional - stopped working completely while we were there with no hope of restoring service. :(

Excellent spot for East side of island

We stayed five nights here while visiting the Hilo area. It is a beautiful spot. We saw whales outside almost every day and enjoyed watching the body surfers from the deck. The views are amazing. Having a light breakfast with fresh fruit each morning was a nice touch. The place is spacious with a good sized bedroom, nice sitting area, small kitchenette and a small bathroom. It all looks fairly updated and in good condition. Lots of storage for suitcases and clothes. About two miles into downtown Hilo so very easy to get around. The weather was quite cool and wet while we were there so we didn’t use the pool or hot tub. The parking spots were a little tight but it never seemed like all four spots were being used so there was room to manoeuvre! Any question we had was responded to via email very promptly both before and during our stay. We would recommend this place as a nice quiet oasis for visiting Hilo and surrounding areas.

Lovely little location with amazing views. Only downside was the detergent that's used is extremely fragrant so the whole apartment smelled very strongly of it. Other than that we absolutely loved our stay.

The host (third party) never responded to our text inquires at check-in time. They must be out of business. The property looked like it hadn't been tended to in months. We were forced to book our stay in a different location nearby at the last minute. VRBO is working with us to get a refund.
