About this property

Spectacular Views and Natural Beauty

On the slopes of Mauna Kea, at 1200’ above the little town of Honomu is located the great waterfall of Akaka. Nearby, on top a hill is our private little piece of paradise. The house overlooks a vast swath of East Hawaii. From the blue of Hilo Bay to the mountain top of Mauna Kea , and across miles of the Hamakua Coast. You can see sights of verdant splendor from this home which sits on fifteen acres that borders a stream. This idyllic setting and the comfort of this home gives your spirit a lift. You 'get away from it all feel'.
Main house Upstairs has private entry and exclusive use of hot tub and lanai. There are three bedrooms and two baths, a fully equipped kitchen , dining area with seating for 6 people. Open lanai has a hot tub for relaxation after a long day enjoying the sights.
Main bedroom has king size bed, adjoining bathroom. The other two guest bedrooms have queen sized beds that share a full bath. Each room has an incredible view.

When you see this property, you will agree that it is one of a kind. Said to have one of the best views on the island, you feel like you are on Top of the World.

Akaka Farms is currently a working farm. We have a few animals, 2 adorable donkeys and several cats that only reside outside downstairs. Alec, one of owners is busy planting ground crops year around for the local markets. The emphasis is on biodynamic gardening.
Your privacy and personal enjoyment are our number one goals. Enjoy, relax and have fun.
The property sits on 15 acres with a gated entry.

Simply Amazing

My wife and I have stayed at numerous time shares on the Hamakua Coast and this one is now our favorite. The home is spacious and comfortable and the views are out of this world. Highly recommend this property.

We enjoyed our stay at this home about 12 mi. North of Hilo.

This property is beautiful, peaceful, and quiet. A good location from which to go to the Botanical Gardens, Akaka Falls, and to take the road north to Waimea. J&M Feb. 2025

Beautiful views, very peaceful.

We had a wonderful time staying at the "Akaka Falls house". The property felt very remote, yet was close enough to town. The ocean and pasture views were amazing. Overall it was very peaceful and relaxing. We enjoyed being so close to Akaka Falls, which we walked to several times.

Quiet and Beautiful

Sunrise views, a river and waterfall adjacent to the property, and peace and quiet all await you at this beautiful well kept vacation rental. The location is great for exploring the Hamakua coast and is close to Hilo town as well. The house was very clean offering all the amenities as our own home. We were very cozy and recommend this house for a vacation. We loved it and will visit again.

Amazing Place

This was a relaxing place to stay. Great location to get away from the busy city. Lots of space for 4 adults and the beds were very comfortable. The only complaint we have is that cats are roaming the property and like to crawl on vehicle and sleep on it for warmth. We had a rental car and they scratch the paint in several places on the hood. Just pop the hood of the vehicle and that will solve the issue.

A True Pleasure

We stayed at this home with 2 young children. The house had everything we could possibly need. The hot tub was a real bonus after a long day. The views are magnificent - even saw the snow capped mountain. Everything was clean and well kept. This gentleman who lives downstairs couldn't have been more helpful. I can truly recommend this lovely home!

Great place… weather out of our control

We have stayed here a few times in the past. We typically love it. We enjoyed the house and the bbq grill and the sunrises as usual. Krystal was very responsive to any questions we had during our stay. During some extremely rainy days/nights we enjoyed watching some Netflix. When the weather was nice the views were phenomenal. The house is very peaceful. This was October 2024 and unfortunately there were a few days of some severe rainy weather that was unusual even for the rainy side of the big island.

Privacy and Views

My husband and I spent 3 marvelous weeks at the Akaka Farm home! We felt so comfortable with the well-appointed kitchen, spacious living room, a lanai and a deck. Spectacular starry nights in the hot tub; ocean and pastoral views; walks to Akaka Falls and easy trips to Hilo and Honokaa. Make sure you check out the delicious food at The Hive in Honomu and the Hakalau Farmer’s Market to eat the most delicious Thai food! The owner Andrea and the caretaker Krystle were responsive and helpful. (An extra bonus for me was Asscot the donkey and ‘his’ four sheep and the caretakers’ cats!) A great get-away!

Nature Lovers Dream

If you love nature, you'll love this place. The home is well-appointed with lots of interesting decor. Quiet and relaxing. Beautiful sunrise views over the ocean. Lots of birds singing and nicely landscaped. Stephen, the caretaker, was there to greet us even though we arrived in the dark of night. He was very interesting to talk to and gave us many helpful hints on the best places to go on the west side of the island. Only one thing they could do to improve our stay and that is to update the address on the fence. LOVED OUR STAY!!!!

Akaka falls

Andrea and her husband were wonderful and very accommodating. We landed October 1, 2014 to find this bungalow style home well furnished, and stocked with all the basic necessities. The house sits on a hill and on lush acreage of tropical plants. You can see the ocean from the porch! It is minutes away from Akaka falls, an amazing waterfall . It is 20-30 minutes outside of Hilo. There is tv and internet, washer and dryer. Would highly recommend! Very convenient, experience peaceful hawaiian country living with great hosts.

Private Nest Above the Treetops

We thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful home perched high on the mountaintop. Totally secluded and private, yet close to everything. The sweetest and ripest fruit came from the nice folks with the fruit stand at the entrance to the road. Delicious local Hawaiian fare at the Low Store in Pepe'ekeo; giant array of tasty jams and spreads to go on fresh bakery from Mr. Ed's Bakery in Honomu. Favorite friendly lunch spot was Papa'aloa Country Store & Cafe. The house is wonderfully appointed that after exploring and lunch out during the day, we'd be happy to hurry home for the sunset and to listen to the frogs and night sounds and dine evenings at home, followed by some time in the hot tub under the stars. Total relaxation. We hope to return again soon!

Peaceful and Unforgettable Visit

My family and I had a lovely visit and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. After a long flight and stressful travel schedule, it was such a treat to arrive in this peaceful and beautiful property. I loved that it was just outside Hilo and that the house was on a hilltop with beautiful views of the ocean and hillside. The rooms were very comfortable and there was so much room for storage if needed. We really enjoyed our mornings on the lanai and our visits with Stephen, the property caretaker. Stephen kindly brought us a bag of Lychee fruit, as it was in season, and we all loved it and bought more throughout our stay in Hawaii. The owners were adding a small exterior deck where they plan to have a hot tub ... that will be awesome once it is completed. I look forward to visiting again some day. Thanks for sharing your lovely home and making our stay unforgettable!

We love it!

It is very hard to get a sense for how cool this spot is from photos and words. As we approached for the first time we saw the house up on a prominent hill, all by itself, surrounded by agricultural lands and patches of forest vegetation - and we thought - that can't be it, can it? It was just too "one of a kind" and unbelievably perfect looking. But it turned out that the house on the hill was the right place and a lovely little private drive led us right to our own little patch of paradise! The setting is incredibly peaceful, especially if you like contemplating the deep blue curve of the ocean at a distance, and the verdant greens of forested and farmed hillsides, and amazingly snow-capped tops of the local volcano... The house is very comfortable and loved the covered lanai. Covered parking is sweet too. All in all I would certainly recommend the place and I hope to be back next year!

Andrea was an excellent host and Krystle and Alec were friendly and helpful downstairs neighbors. This was a great place to stay in mid-summer with temperatures in the 70s during the day and in the 60s at night. It is perfectly situated for exploring the Hamakua Coast. Honoli'i Beach is only twenty minutes away and Hilo is just a little further for groceries. Kilauea, Mauna Kea, and Mauna Loa are only an hour away. We saw two eruptions and spent lots of time exploring lava fields and caves. While it is 15-acre property, it is not private. The rental space is directly above the living quarters for the on-site managers and with open windows you hear all their conversations, telephone calls, and TV programs. And they probably hear everything from upstairs. When we checked in Krystle warned us of low water pressure and this proved to be an issue for the duration of our stay. Water pressure was so low that it was only practical to shower if nobody else was using water at the same time. Using the toilet or the kitchen sink could bring the shower to a trickle or even a dead stop. While the property overlooks a vast swath of Hawaii, the design of the house does not provide easy access to the views. The living room is oriented to the interior rather than to the views. A bed on the lanai faces to the living room rather than to the view and further blocks the view from the living area. Where the master bedroom should have views to the ocean, it instead has a bathroom and closet.

Great getaway!

What a great location to get away from it all! We loved feeling like we were in the clouds when the rain set in. We loved the sound of the distant waterfall and stream and our little granddaughter even learned to love the sounds of the croakie frogs at night. Highly recommend this little slice of rural Hawaii.

Visiting Family

We were visiting Hilo for my dad's 80th Birthday celebration and took a mini staycation. While the location is farther out of Hilo than we normally stay, Honomu was perfect. The view was absolutely amazing! The home was nice and clean and more than enough space for the three of us. Gazing up at the stars at night in the jacuzzi was the highlight of our stay. Mahalo for sharing your home with us.

Beautiful, relaxing location

This house was the perfect location for us. We were visiting the Big Island to connect with various family which was a wonderful and busy time. Coming back to this house up in the windward hills provided the perfect contrast to our busy times. The views are beautiful, daytime, morning sunrises, evening sunsets, rain coming in over the ocean, rainbows, night skies filled with stars, more beauty than one could hope for. The 3 bedrooms are very comfortable; the house is furnished quite nicely with Hawaii style decor. Loved it. Kitchen is well stocked with dishes, cooking utensils, even condiments. Hot tub on the porch with view to the open skies. What is not to love. I would come back to this location in a heart beat.
