When we moved to Hawai'i in 1989 our journey started in Volcano Village outside of the National Park. In 2000 we moved our karma and love for the 'aina (land) to Honoli'i. When you visit our home we hope you engender the same feelings we have: peace, serenity and the knowledge that Pele and Kanaloa watch over the Big Island and the special piece of it we mind for them.
When we bought this property we completely remodeled it from the ground up. It has state of the art finishes throughout and is meant to provide a tranquil respite for Lisha and I after we complete our work with the Foreign Service. It's a place for families to gather together and celebrate what's important.
When you walk in through the custom front door, you will start to see the design features and art immediately. Large spaces and endless light fill the main area which include the living room, kitchen, dining area and lanais. There are two bedrooms, one with a king and one with two twins, on the street level.
Take the staircase downstairs and you enter the realm of the sixty by twenty foot wide Master Suite with a king size bed. The beautiful bathroom has a free standing tub while the toilet is in a separate room. Then there is my personal favorite, a double shower which is also a steam room. There is a second, fully covered lanai on this level as well. Just outside the bedroom's side door there is an outdoor shower looking over the ocean.
Cooling is provided by AC and ceiling and floor fans in all rooms. If you open the sliding doors the trade winds keep it comfortable. Between June and August it can be hot and muggy on a few days which is part of being in Hawai’i. While we always sleep with the doors and windows open, it is nice to have the AC option. Please be considerate as we have the most expensive electric rates in the country 🙏
The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you might need. Please note that housekeeping removes condiments and food when cleaning so please bring what you require. Please be aware that our insurance does NOT allow for charcoal or gas grills and BBQs.
Like all of East Hawai’i we have coqui frogs chirping at night. Depending on the night they can be loud. Most guests find the sound pleasing while others not so much!
OCCUPANCY-In consideration of our neighbors and because of liability issues, OCCUPANCY AND USE OF THE HOUSE IS STRICTLY LIMITED TO THE NUMBER OF GUESTS WE HAVE AGREED TO IN YOUR RESERVATION. Other persons are not allowed on the property and there can be no loud parties at any time. Quiet hours are dictated by County ordinance and are between 9pm and 8am during which time "noise shall not unreasonably disturb adjacent neighbors". At all other times of the day "sound shall not be more excessive than would otherwise be associated with a residential area". Our neighbors closely monitor the street and record and report disruptive events as soon as they happen.
IF WE RECEIVE A COMPLAINT REGARDING EXCESSIVE TRAFFIC, NOISE OR PARTIES OF ANY KIND YOU WILL FORFEIT YOUR SECURITY DEPOSIT. We understand that many wish to have events and parties and in fact love a good time ourselves. If that is your need then our home is not the place for you.
Parking is in the driveway ONLY. Please do not park on the street.
Please be aware that we only accept reservations through recognized distribution channels. There are scams that show photos of our home on the internet where you are asked to send payment directly. PLEASE DO NOT BE FOOLED!

We were there during the worst storm in years - pouring rain every day. Plus post volcano eruption dangers. None the less, this was a great house to stay in. Lots of room to spread out. House well appointed. Lovely ocean view and surf sound.
The review prompts suggest mentioning cleanliness, convenience, etc. My review will be a little different. I'm a Midwest girl born and raised in Missouri, and that's where I plan to stay, but this home in Hilo became a home away from home. Two days after returning to Missouri, I woke up missing the view of Hilo Bay and the sound of the ocean breaking against the shore.Besides all that, it's in a quiet area a little north of Hilo but still conveniently located for easy access to its downtown and other beautiful locations to visit on the island.
If you enjoy the sound of surf and gazing out at the ocean, this is the spot for you. The lanai, main room, kitchen and dining area are wonderful. Spacious, comfortable, and with wonderful views and plenty of ocean sounds. Great location if you want to be near Hilo. Host was very friendly and attentive. Would definitely stay again.
Absolute gem!!! We didn't want to leave! The house is beautiful inside and outside, very clean, cosy and convenient location. We would definitely come again and recommend this house to anyone.
We had an amazing stay! The property is very close to a lot of Waterfalls, beaches and amazing restaurants. Sitting on the deck was very relaxing and stunning view!
This home was perfect for our short stay on the Big Island. It had all of the comforts that our family of 6 needed, including a fully equipped chefs' kitchen, comfortable beds and a view that is unmatched. Each night we opened the windows wide to be lulled to sleep by the crashing ocean waves.
The house was perfect for our two-day stay in Hilo with our three girls. The sound of the ocean was such a treat, and the cool breeze flowing through was lovely. We also really enjoyed the charming travel artifacts and the great selection of books across many genres. The rain shower, jets, and steam room were a relaxing bonus after a full day of play in Hilo.

Camp Crawford is a moveable feast. Having spent over twenty years in Hawaii, we joined the Foreign Service in 2010 and served nearly four years in Frankfurt, two in Washington, D.C., three in Dakar, Senegal and then Bangkok, Thailand through the end of 2021. Elizabeth and I live full time in South Africa and make it home to Hawaii once or twice a year.
Winston attended CSU-Ft. Collins studying economics and entrepreneurship and now works for AURA and the Gemini Telescope here on the Big Island. Clarissa graduated from Erasmus University in Rotterdam after doing a semester at the National University in Singapore and then completed her Masters program in Human Rights at the University of Vienna in Austria. Randall is currently pursuing a BS in Aeronautical Engineering in the Netherlands.
