About this property

Absolute Oceanfront in Hilo! Read our Reviews!

When we moved to Hawai'i in 1989 our journey started in Volcano Village outside of the National Park. In 2000 we moved our karma and love for the 'aina (land) to Honoli'i. When you visit our home we hope you engender the same feelings we have: peace, serenity and the knowledge that Pele and Kanaloa watch over the Big Island and the special piece of it we mind for them.

When we bought this property we completely remodeled it from the ground up. It has state of the art finishes throughout and is meant to provide a tranquil respite for Lisha and I after we complete our work with the Foreign Service. It's a place for families to gather together and celebrate what's important.

When you walk in through the custom front door, you will start to see the design features and art immediately. Large spaces and endless light fill the area which include the living room, kitchen, dining area and lanai. On this main level there are two bedrooms, one with a queen and one with two twins.

Take the staircase downstairs and you enter the realm of the sixty by twenty foot wide Family Suite. It has a queen bed and a king size bed in the sleeping area. The beds aren’t visible from each other but there no additional privacy. The beautiful bathroom has a free standing tub while the toilet is in a separate room. Then there is my personal favorite, a double shower which is also a steam room. There is a second, fully covered lanai on this level as well. Just outside the bedroom's side door there is an outdoor shower looking over the ocean.

Cooling is provided by ceiling and floor fans in all rooms. If you open the sliding doors the trade winds keep it comfortable. Between June and August it can be hot and muggy on a few days which is part of being in Hawai’i. We do not have AC nor do most homes in East Hawai'i.

The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you might need. Please note that housekeeping removes condiments and food when cleaning so please bring what you require. Please be aware that our insurance does NOT allow for charcoal or gas grills and BBQs.

Like all of East Hawai’i we have coqui frogs chirping at night. Depending on the night they can be loud. Most guests find the sound pleasing while others not so much!

OCCUPANCY-In consideration of our neighbors and because of liability issues, OCCUPANCY AND USE OF THE HOUSE IS STRICTLY LIMITED TO THE NUMBER OF GUESTS WE HAVE AGREED TO IN YOUR RESERVATION. Other persons are not allowed on the property and there can be no loud parties at any time. Quiet hours are dictated by County ordinance and are between 9pm and 8am during which time "noise shall not unreasonably disturb adjacent neighbors". At all other times of the day "sound shall not be more excessive than would otherwise be associated with a residential area". Our neighbors closely monitor the street and record and report disruptive events as soon as they happen.

IF WE RECEIVE A COMPLAINT REGARDING EXCESSIVE TRAFFIC, NOISE OR PARTIES OF ANY KIND YOU WILL FORFEIT YOUR SECURITY DEPOSIT. We understand that many wish to have events and parties and in fact love a good time ourselves. If that is your need then our home is not the place for you.

Parking is in the driveway ONLY. Please do not park on the street.

Please be aware that we only accept reservations through VRBO and related distributed channels like HomeAway and Expedia. There are scams that show photos of our home on Craigslist where you are asked to send payment directly. PLEASE DO NOT BE FOOLED!

Our base rate is for up to four guests. Each additional guest from five to a maximum of eight is charged at $50 per person per night to cover additional wear and tear and utility costs.

FINAL IMPORTANT NOTE about our cancellation policy.

In 2020 we nearly lost our home when we were prohibited from accepting guests for nearly a year and our income dropped to zero. We gave many refunds and allowed others to reschedule for future dates which was unfortunately still a complete loss to us.

Commencing June 1st, 2021 we are once again firm in our policy. Cancellations received at least sixty (60) days before your arrival date will be refunded in full. Inside of sixty days and before thirty days you will receive a 50% refund. Inside of THIRTY DAYS there are NO refunds. The ONLY exception would be if Hawaii State or County authorities prohibit us from having guests due to a public health emergency or natural disaster. Then we will work with each guest individually to find a solution.

To protect both of us we recommend securing travel insurance that allows you to cancel in the event you are uncomfortable traveling or if Covid cases rise, or any other issue such as a personal health or family emergency. With that in place you will hopefully receive your money back and we will not be asked to bear the entire burden on our shoulders.

Clean, great location

Had a great time staying here. Would recommend for families, the downstairs suite doesn’t allow for much privacy for two couples. Overall 5 stars.

We had a wonderful stay in this lovely home. Plenty of room for our family of 5, all the kids had their own bed. Great location on the East side of the island just outside of Hilo. Loved sitting on the back deck looking out at the ocean.

Excellent location!

We had a fabulous time at this location. It had great views, was close to things in Hilo, and offered wonderful amenities. We enjoyed our stay. There was the perfect amount of space for our family. We enjoyed sitting on the lanai and seeing and hearing the ocean. The family suite was an amazing space that couldn’t have fit our needs better!

Cliff front home Hilo

Fantastic location near Hilo with easy access to beaches, farmers market, and restaurants. Sunrises from the Lani were a great way to start the day (some of the trees have grown up blocking the view of Hilo). I would diffently stay there again.

Wonderful Place.

Fantastic place with everything you need. Very comfortable, relaxing with main activities about 60 minutes away. Great to relax and watch the whales and dolphins go by while enjoying the ocean breeze on the patio. Owner was easy to work with and prompt on responses. We were three couples traveling together. Lots of good places to eat in-town if you don’t want to cook.

We love this place! The location is perfect and the home is both beautiful, comfortable and completely relaxing. The kitchen is first class. Best of all for us is the continuous ocean breeze that keeps the house forever comfortable. If it is warm when you arrive, just open the many windows and sliding glass doors (all screened). You will enjoy not only the tropical breeze but the ethereal surf sounds from the ocean below. The owners, who lived in the home themselves and intend to return for their retirement, live remotely but treat guests with personal attention (this is not run by some commercial vacation resort business). The home is decorated with museum-quality art. It is located on a seemingly ordinary residential street but the home is special.Apparently some have asked about air conditioning but we never thought this would be desirable. We have been there twice, most recently for two weeks in August 2025, supposedly the hottest month. The sea breeze is constant and we never even used the ceiling fans that are in most rooms. The house stays very comfortable with the windows and doors open (all have screens). We have booked another visit a few months out, further proof that we love to stay here.

Gorgeous house!

We loved our stay here - a three generation family with 2 grandparents, 2 parents and 3 kids. The house is beautiful with a lovely view of the ocean and Hilo Bay (ok, there are city lights at night, and it's mostly shipping) but also we could see the glow of the volcano in the sky at night! It is a super short drive into Hilo for whatever you need, but the house feels isolated and rural. Also you are along the northern road which has great sight-seeing. The house has a great kitchen for cooking and lanai for eating meals outside. I would definitely stay here again if returning to the Hilo area.

Wonderful spot!

What a great home! Spent 4 lovely days with our adult children. Everyone enjoyed the views from the house, and hearing the crashing surf that lulled us to bed at night. Loved that we could check surf conditions from the lanai and we were close enough to hike down to the beach to surf. The kitchen was perfect for preparing meals in this time of Covid, or eating takeout at the table on the lanai. The beds were comfortable and the showers the absolute best. Hilo was a great starting off point to hike at the volcano, visit the botanical garden and go to the farmers market. Delightful stay. Thank you!

Lovely! Peaceful! Perfect!

Beautiful, quiet, peaceful place! This house is convenient to everything. We were in Hilo to celebrate my son's wedding and this place provided the perfect place for my family before and after the festivities. Not only was it convenient to all the activities that our age diverse family members were interested in, but it was great to have a refuge of sorts to regroup after busy days. The house is lovely and comfortable and has everything one could need and was very clean. We saw whales, stars, and cruise ships, all from the porch. The breeze and the sound of the waves soothe the soul! Thank you for thinking of everything!

The most Amazing Place

Hard to summarize the detail and perfection. We vacation a lot and this home went beyond our expectations. From the beautiful sunrises with a 180 degree view of the bay to daily whale sightings to the amazing decor. We loved the full body spray showers and deep soaker tub. The kitchen was beautiful and well stocked. The beds and bedding were comfortable The house is in a nice neighborhood with only the sounds of the birds and the ocean. The ocean breeze was amazing at keeping the house at a perfect temperature The owners were only a text away with answers to any questions. The blender quit on us and there was a new one at the door the next morning check in and out was hassle free. We will definitely stay there again. Thank you Brian for sharing your amazing home in paradise with us!!!

Ocean Front at its best!

We recently completed our 5th vacation stay at, “Absolutely OceanFront” in Hilo, right on the water. The ocean views were stunning, sleeping to the sound of the waves was incredibly relaxing. The house was clean, very spacious, and well-equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The outdoor space, along with its upper & lower level Lanai’s overlooking the water, was perfect for morning coffee and sunrise (occasional cruise ship) or evening cocktails. The location was convenient to, Volcano National Park, hiking, beaches and 5 minutes from restaurants and downtown Hilo yet far enough to feel peaceful and secluded. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a serene oceanfront getaway in Hilo! Being from Texas we definitely enjoy our AC. We didn’t miss AC for a second! Can’t beat the smell of fresh ocean air along with the cooling breeze from the trade winds! Thank you again Brian and Elizabeth for sharing your beautiful home with us!

Amazing views

This property had amazing views of the ocean right off the front covered deck! Listening to the crashing waves at night sleeping was perfection. The home was very clean and ready for us when we checked in. Hilo was a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu. We easily drove to the Kona side for some of our sight seeing and only took about an hour and half to get there. The views were amazing and the home was only about 45 min from the volcano National park. The home was as described and we didn’t catch there was no AC but honestly didn’t need it anyway. The temps at night were cool enough for very comfortable sleeping! We had a 6 and 9 year old and they loved the house and all of the decor. Great place to stay and we would definitely stay again!

Amazing

The home, location, and view was beyond our expectations! It was hard to leave because you become so used to the serenity of it all. Sunrise to sunset view is literally two steps and the ocean sound was so soothing to hear. Our host was very responsive to any questions and was very welcoming. The location was great! 15 minutes to airport, 10 minutes to downtown Hilo and Hilo Farmer Market! Short 8 minutes drive to the Botanical Garden! The neighborhood was very quiet. If you are wanting to party, DO NOT rent this place. This place is for relaxing, unwinding, and just enjoying the Big Island how it is supposed to be: natural. Our group truly enjoyed our first welcome to Hawaii! Thank you!

Would stay here again!

We were fortunate to enjoy a week at the property just before the COVID craziness. From the balcony we watched cruise ships leave Hilo harbor and whales waved at us on our first magical evening. The property sits atop an ocean cliff and the deep rumble of the surf below made us sleep like babies. The house is quite well-appointed, and a great location for exploring the north island, waterfall hikes, etc. The only reason we didn't give a 5-start overall rating is because we felt there could have been a few more amenities like binoculars (we bought a cheap pair for whale watching and left them for future guests) and a better selection of cookware in the nice kitchen. We managed to bake a birthday cake and cook some nice meals but a few more pots and pans would have made that less of a scavenger hunt. Overall, our stay was wonderful and we would definitely return if staying in the area. Mahalo!
