About this property

Lazy M Mountain Cabin- A Cozy Mountain Getaway. No Cleaning Fee

Our cabin is nestled in the majestic mountain terrain of Gallatin National Forest and is just twelve miles from Gardiner, a year round gateway to Yellowstone National Park. It is the perfect distance to be able to enjoy Yellowstone but be able to get away from the crowds. From The Lazy M Yellowstone National Park is a scenic 20-25 minute drive. Our cabin is 30 minutes from Chico Hot Springs, an hour from Livingston, and hour and a half from Bozeman Airport.

The cabin is adjacent to Cinnabar Creek, which is great for small trout fishing, and has a magnificent porch with Adirondack chairs to enjoy the beautiful mountain view. If you want to just sit back and relax you can spend hours sitting on the porch next to the creek drinking coffee or wine while reading one of our many books or just enjoying the peaceful environment. Watch deer, elk, and big horn sheep in the meadow out the front door, along the creek or on the nearby bluffs. Bears have also been seen from the porch and along the road. If you are really lucky you may even see a mountain lion. During the evening hours make sure to keep an ear open for howling wolves.

There is a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, pull out sleeper sofa in main cabin and a Tulikivi Fireplace.

This is a mountain cabin in the heart of Montana’s wilderness. While it has most of the amenities of home, it is still a rustic cabin. We have books, travel guides and games in the cabin. There is no TV or phone in the cabin. WiFi is satellite and therefore not extremely reliable; if you absolutely need internet during every moment of your stay you should look elsewhere. We did just upgrade to Starlink so internet should be faster and more reliable but it is still satellite so could be affected by weather (May 2023).
We allow 2 night stays during off-season and to fill during summer. There is a $75 cleaning fee for 2 night rentals.

This place is a gem of a find.

This was our second time staying at the Lazy M and it was incredible and beautiful. Very private and Quiet, unlike the rush you would get staying at a hotel or resort. Once you stay, you will see why this place is special!

A nice cabin off the main road to get away from folks. Great to get offline, play games and catch up with family. Would recommend to anyone.

Cozy cabin

The lazy M was a great home base for our trip to Yellowstone! It’s very secluded down a gravel road, so lots of peace and quiet. We saw tons of elk in the area. We loved sitting outside on the deck and listening to the creek. Everything was just as described, and Laurel was great with responding promptly and answering all of our questions!

Not quite as pictured

The cabin is clean, well stocked and everything works. However, the picture is not an accurate depiction of the property, which made the property more difficult to locate. The good thing is that there is a nice deck on the left side of the house, the bad thing is that there are elevated fuel tanks on the right side of the house. Also, due to the height of the grass, the boulders that protect the lateral field are not easily visible and constrict the turnaround space quite a bit. If you have a large vehicle, you will need to back in from the road. Be aware, there is no cell coverage (Verizon), the road to the cabin is quite washboardy, which is not the fault of the owners. The sound of the creek is relaxing and the lack of internet and tv contributes to the overall Montana experience.

WARNING

Stayed Early October 2022 If we say anything negative regarding our stay the owner will try to contradict any issues by saying we should have called so they could correct the problem(s). That, in and of itself, was a problem as there is not a phone nor phone service from the cabin and the internet only works when the owner wants it to. Our satellite internet works perfectly in the mountains where we live. Please make sure to read all reviews before making a decision on staying at Lazy M Mountain Cabin. The address we were given for the cabin was wrong and for an abandoned cabin down the road. This place is not a rustic cabin in the woods. It is within a few feet of the neighbor and has nothing outdoors other than the porch, a small patch of weeds and a parking area that you need to back fifty feet out of. Enjoyment of the outdoors is limited to the porch, the road or drive somewhere else. There are a few food items in the cabin, most were expired. Know in advance that the owner expects the departing guest to wash all dishes, silverware, pots and pans as well as clean the house. We had to rewash everything we used. Bringing a duster would have been helpful as there were numerous cobwebs, despite the fact there were guests that left the morning we arrived. Details of the listing when we booked are that it has a “full” bathroom. Apparently not all “full” bathrooms have a sink and/or mirror. Bring your reading glasses as the guest instruction book is about 20 pages in length. There are even instructions on how to properly sleep in the bed. “Large blankets are only to be used on the beds with sheets; they should not come into direct contact with a person’s body. This means sleep between the flat and fitted sheets with your head on the pillow.” I am grateful that we had our own pillows and travel quilt. Post it notes with instructions are scattered just about everywhere. (Crayons, stove, spices, appliances) The wood stove is a nice touch but you are really not supposed to use it, they give you some wood and the instructions are to not light more than two fires per day. That did not even warm the fireplace. The instructions and Post it notes are not informative and in this cabin are overpowering and obsessive. We saw no vacation rental license posted, no fire inspection posted, and no well test. In our opinion this cabin does not meet minimum standards set by the state of Montana. BE AWARE

This cabin was exactly what we were looking for!! It was defiantly a cabin in the woods away from the hussle and bussle of the city. We got to see wildlife right outside the cabin everyday. There was a nice porch to sit outside and enjoy nature at its finest. It was about a 25 minute drive to the front gate of Yellowstone National Park. Host were very quick about responding to any questions we had prior to our stay. Never had to contact them while were we there, so i guess thats good! There was not very good cell service there but it wasn't great in the park either which was kind of nice! Deinraly recommend booking this cabin if you want to be one with nature and nothing else!

The captain was very nice however I wish I would’ve known about the man that lives right outside the bedroom window. It was hot at night so you had to sleep with the windows open. A fan would’ve been nice to have, but it was a little awkward knowing that there was a man right there. But other than that, everything was great.

Winter Mountain Getaway

I picked this place because it seemed like a very cozy cabin that was in striking distance of Yellowstone National park. After my stay, I can say that I was right on both counts! The cabin was fantastic and has everything you might want: a porch with chairs to start the day with a cup of coffee, a great fireplace, and all the amenities you need to cook or wind down or just relax. There’s even great internet access if you want to listen to music or watch a movie. The hosts are incredibly generous with their time and were very helpful before and during my trip with all kinds of questions (from weather to where to get groceries). If you’re looking for a home base to explore Yellowstone, look no further, this is it! You’re close to the park, close to Gardiner and its activities and restaurants, and even close to some amazing hot springs just down the road (highly recommend going there if it works with your trip : Yellowstone Hot Spring). This place is everything it advertises and more. Book this place for a restorative escape from a busy life. You will not regret it!!

The check-in and communication with the owner was great! Loved how cozy and quaint it was and had enough amenities to make it so we had what we needed. Internet was a bit choppy but expected. Be aware of the long gravel road in poor condition. Would totally stay again!!

Cain in Gardiner

Cabin was exactly as advertised. It was rustic but had everything there to make it a pleasant stay. The large stream running beside the cabin was a bonus It was located about 20 minutes off the highway, but that made it more secluded and peaceful. We spent most of our time in the park, but it would be a great place just to stay there and relax in peace.

We loved the cabin so much. Driving to the location was a little intimidating but so worth it. It was so quiet and peaceful. The kitchen had everything we needed and more. I loved sitting on the front porch. It was a good location to enter Yellowstone through the north entrance. Would definitely return again.

About the host

Hosted by Emily Sherman, Paul & Laurel Koller

Host profile image
Paul and Emily purchased our property in 1994 after looking for a number of years. Emily's great grandfather had owned a general store next to the Crow Indian reservation in the 1890's. Her grandmother grew up in Anaconda, Montana. We have always enjoyed the landscape and dry mountain air of Montana. Paul and Emily had vacationed for many years in Yellowstone National Park before we purchased the LazyM. Day to day operation of the LazyM is done by Paul and Emily's daughter Laurel

Why they chose this property

We choose this location because of it's proximity to Yellowstone Park and the beautiful scenery of Paradise Valley while allowing us quiet seclusion when needed. We enjoy hiking, fishing and both downhill and cross country skiing.

What makes this property unique

Sitting on the porch or deck you have a wonderful view of Cinnabar mountain. At night you can sleep with the sound of the creek flowing by and enjoy the fresh mountain air. Our cabin was built in the 1950's and we have tried to preserve it's original charm. We have white pine floors in the main cabin and rustic kitchen cabinets.
