Our family of six had the most fantastic stay at this luxurious log home nestled in the mountains of British Columbia. Surrounded by nature, the house is incredibly spacious, with plenty of areas to relax, play games, rest, or watch TV. We could easily spend time together as a group or find quiet moments alone. The large kitchen was perfect for gathering and cooking, and the massive dining table served as a great spot for meals and games alike. We absolutely loved the seclusion of the mountains—the fresh air and endless starry skies were unforgettable. On the drive to the house from Calgary, we enjoyed the beauty of Banff, Lake Louise, and Takakaw Falls. Each day in Kicking Horse, we enjoyed nearby excursions, including the suspension bridge—which my 83-year-old mother bravely crossed and loved—a grizzly bear refuge, and a wolf sanctuary. Even the Golden Museum exceeded our expectations. And the Eleven22 restaurant rivaled some of the best spots in Vancouver and Toronto! All in all, it was the perfect getaway, centered around an exceptional luxury home. Thank you, Gabriel, for all your help in getting us organized and ensuring a hassle-free, memorable vacation.

Granny loved the highest suspension bridge in Canada and now wants to jump out of a plane.
Boo the grizzly bear is near by at the Kicking Horse resort and has a fascinating story to tell about wildlife preservation.

Great Vacation House

We stayed here with a lot of people, and it was the perfect spot for all of us. We cooked in, used the fireplaces, the hot tub in back and all of the amenities were wonderful. This Mountain house is well equipped, well maintained, clean, beautiful, and has spectacular mountain views. It was even better than the pictures of it. We enjoyed the ski in and ski out capability as well. I highly recommend this house for your next vacation to Kicking Horse. We loved it there! Karen

Brilliant Home away from Home

We are a group of family and friends adults who gather every other year for a grand outdoor adventure somewhere in the world. This year, given that most in the group were in the U.S., we selected Banff and the adjacent parks for our group adventure. Seeking a good "base camp", I happened on the HomeAway listing for Black Wolf Chalet in Golden, Canada, just west of Banff. I began corresponding with the owner in January. He was always very responsive to our needs and questions. We found the home to be exactly as advertised. It provided this year's group of 7 with a very comfortable, well-equipped and enjoyable home. Everything in the home is of high quality, a nd exceptionally clean. For the few minor issues we uncovered and reported, the owner responded appropriately. I would recommend Black Wolf Chalet to anyone staying in and around Banff and Yoho National Parks.

Great stay in a terrific house!

We spent 5 nights at the house on a 3-generation family ski trip. We loved the space and layout. The decor is fabulous and it had a well-stocked kitchen with everything we needed. The heated floors and hot tub were particular highlights! We did encounter a few minor maintenance problems with the dishwasher and range, but the owner said he would take care of them after our stay and they didn't interfere with our enjoyment of this gorgeous house! Only thing to note is that, while it is definitely ski-IN, it's only ski-OUT when the road is snow covered (which it wasn't in March). To get to the nearest lift, you need to ski down a road a couple of blocks, cross a larger road, then you can get on a trail to the lifts. I'm sure this is fine through most of the season, but with bare pavement on the road for us it meant either a somewhat lengthy walk with your skis down the road OR a climb/scramble up a steep hill behind the house. Overall, still a terrific stay and Gabe was a very responsive host!

The property was “well used” and needed a thorough cleaning.

There was no AC at this property and with the summer nights being very hot we tried to open windows to cool the house down in the evening. Most of the window hardware was removed so windows couldn’t be opened. I wish I would have known that the toilet didn’t have its own room in the ensuite. The picture online doesn’t show that. It was separated with a half wall in the master bedroom. Overall the layout was great for this home. The “bedroom” in the basement had no windows, but our two teenage boys didn’t seem to mind that. Quiet community. Hot tub was nice. There were two walls in the living area that looked like they had water damage. The upstairs loft area had a huge carpet stain. Overall it felt the house was not well maintained.

Luxury chalet at base of fabulous ski resort

The house is a beautiful mountain home with luxury finishes. The furniture is comfortable and you can really relax after skiing all day. The hot tub is in a splendid setting and is very peaceful. We were 2 families with three children. The bunk beds were a little high for our liking but our ten year old loved it. There is only one master bedroom. We would have preferred 2 bedrooms with ensuites but that is a minor inconvenience given our overall love of the house. There are sufficient bathrooms and showers that no one is waiting for a shower or the bathroom. There are plenty of towels and extra niceties like shower gel, laundry detergent and tissues, flip flops and towels for the hot tub. The house was very clean and in good order. The housekeeper is very prompt to answer to any issues. We really appreciated the owner's amazing service. He refunded our security deposit even before we had unpacked (within 24 hours). He found us a fabulous babysitter, gave us restaurant recommendations and even tried to find us a cook (which we did not pursue in the end). The ski-in at the end of the day was wonderful. Just a tip though - the easiest run back to the house (from the top of the Catamount chair) requires an easy traverse but then a ski down the bottom part of the blue run which may be challenging for beginner skiers. The ski-out is easy but may require a short walk downhill if there is not sufficient snow on the road. Overall though, this place is in the best position for a house at the base of the mountain. The terrain at KH is really wonderful. There is a great beginner's area, excellent blue and black runs and great bowls with challenging runs. Intermediate skiers may find it challenging to step up to the next level at KH as some of the blues and blacks are steep. We dined at Eagle Eye and Cedar House restaurants and thought the food and service was fabulous. Overall, we could not believe how good the food was everywhere we went. In the village, we loved the Peaks' cafe sandwiches and soup, and even at the yurt (mid-mountain) we enjoyed fabulous lunches. A fabulous holiday. We will return!

The overall experience was good. House is well equipped with kitchen and bathroom supplies. The wifi is not great, which didn’t bother me too much but a couple of the dads needed to do some online work and was a bit tricky. The beds are not super comfy and pillows are flat, so for some people that might be an issue. Bring a couple sleeping bags if you’re going to use pullout, we couldn’t find a comforter but we didn’t ask either because we had a couple sleeping bags. The fridge is small, especially for a large group so bring a plug in cooler to help with storage. We thought the house might get too hot without AC but it didn’t and it really cools off at night in the mountains. The hot tub was nice and hot, very lovely atmosphere outside. Overall, I good place for a large group of people!

The chalet is in a quiet area with a lovely view of Kicking Horse area and surrounding mountains. It was easy to find and easy driving distance to Golden and Banff. The beds are comfortable, hot tub, steam shower were perks after long days of travel. The chalet was very clean and comfortable for our family. Gabriel is a great host, very responsive and helpful. We had a lovely week there, relaxing, enjoying family dinner and game nights, even roasted marshmallows and had s'mores on the deck by the kitchen. We easily could have stayed another week!

We are two avid skiers who bought our house for ski trips with family and friends and eventual retirement. To help pay the bills we rent it out when we aren't using it. We first skied at Kicking Horse in 2004 as part of our yearly ski trip with friends - that year trying out the eastern side of the Canadian Rockies. We had skied Whistler a couple of times and knew we loved Canadians. They are so nice, cheerful and friendly people. Our day at Kicking Horse was the favorite of everyone on the trip. We couldn't believe how great the snow was, how big the mountain was and how few people there were. My wife and I actually got engaged at the top of Lake Louise. She asked me to marry her and I said yes and she presented me with candy lollipop rings (we later upgraded them). Anyway, we looked at buying at the time but weren't in a financial position to do so. But in 2009 we were in a much better position and so we decided to come back to double check if everything we remembered about it was true. It was and we happened to stumble upon a great deal on this home and jumped at the opportunity. With any life changing event there is always a little voice that wonders if you are doing the right thing. That voice went away and never came back after we had to stop for a black wolf in the middle of the road between Banff and Golden. We knew this was the place for us. We decided to name the house after that black wolf we saw. We hope that you will consider experiencing our wonderful home and get as much enjoyment out of it as we do.

Why they chose this property

We love to ski and Kicking Horse has some of the best skiing in North America. We absolutely love the snow and varied terrain of Kicking Horse. And the views are to die for.
