About this property
Midcentury Modern Masterpiece-- 1950's Richard NEUTRA Home in Missoula!
Designed by world famous architect Richard Neutra in 1950 as a "Hollywood home dropped in the Rockies," the Mosby House, a unique and (literally) airy house perched in the south hills of Missoula, has stunning wraparound views of the Valley and the mountains all around. The
The open plan creates an incredible spacious feeling, and enormous sliding windows bring you in full contact with the outdoors: cool and breezy in the summer, and-- with a wood-burning stove in the living room-- a warm and cozy retreat to watch the weather roll in, in the winter. We've decorated with a "handmade modern" feeling to make the most of the space (and the climate).
Four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a huge office adjoining the master bedroom; a bright balcony, sunny flagstone patio and big, sweeping lawns on three sides; private driveway with expansive adjacent community park; new Bluestar 36" culinary stove; new Bosch dishwasher, fridge, washer, dryer; tall wide and handsome (and completely restored) kitchen with views onto Mount Sentinel and Missoula valley; bright, cozy, art-filled breakfast nook; good sledding hill, fruit trees, shade trees— all make this a unique getaway for: autumnal colors, ski season, lilac spring, or high summer.
You can walk onto the Highlands Golf course right above us, or hike up nearby Mt. Sentinel and Crazy Canyon in the summer. Or X-Country ski out the back door, or drive up the road to Pattee Canyon Ski Area, and warm yourself at our huge stone fireplace afterwards. Overlooking the University District, very close to shopping centers, great coffee shops (we recommend Clyde, Drumm, and Black Coffee), restaurants, a short drive or bus to downtown, 25 minutes to Snobowl, 20 minutes to airport, 10 minutes and you're at a cutbank above the Bitterroot, Clarkfork or Blackfoot rivers.
There is a master bedroom with a queen (and adjoining master bath), , and in the upstairs " bedroom wing"-- two guest rooms with queen beds, and a pretty center room with twin beds-- good for kids, tweens, and kid-sized adults. There's also several cozy couches. Four Bathrooms (three showers, two baths), many amenities for kids (including play area, doll houses, etc), wifi/broadband internet, etc. Wood stove Fireplace. Picnic Table. Gas Grill for BBQ....
We have done so much to bring this unique home back to its original glory-- burnishing a diamond in the rough, and, well, the rough was darn nice to begin with!
PLEASE NOTE: The entire house is available, except for: the GARAGE and the efficiency/ GUEST APARTMENT downstairs (with which you will share the washer & dryer). [Our co-host & long-term tenant lives on the site/ uses garage bay. ]

we've lived here in this house since 2009; now we rent it most of the year, and come home to enjoy it as often as we can. We can speak to the genius of Neutra in creating a home that allows you to be at your best, surrounded by nature and light.
Why they chose this property
Acclaimed architect Richard Neutra designed and built the Mosby House at 109 West Artemos Drive in Missoula, Montana, in 1949-1950. Maverick Missoula radio and TV broadcaster Art Mosby commissioned the house, which is perched in the town’s south hills, after visiting Los Angeles and touring homes built by Neutra and other modernists there. One of only two houses in Montana designed by Neutra— and of only a handful of his works in the entire Northwest— the Mosby house has been meticulously restored to its initial state. It truly is a Hollywood home, dropped into the Rockies.
In 1933, Art Mosby founded KGVO Radio, the very first radio (and, later, television) station in Montana. On a visit to LA to visit his intrepid journalist daughter Aileen, Mosby was taken with the modern homes Neutra was building in the Hollywood Hills. Mosby commissioned him to build this house, which would be the pilot for Mosby’s Farview development (and Highlands Golf Course). The house is living proof of Neutra’s lyrical philosophy: “Human habitat in the deepest sense is much more than mere shelter. It is the fulfillment of the search—in space—for happiness and emotional equilibrium.”
Richard Neutra was one of the most influential architects of the twentieth-century. Neutra helped define modernism in Southern California and around the world. Born in Vienna, Neutra moved to the US to work in Frank Lloyd Wright’ studio at Taliesen. In 1925 he moved to Los Angeles and founded a studio with Rudolph Schindler. Through the following decades, Neutra would revolutionize residential architecture.
We've taken pains to complete an intensive restoration of the house: largely restoring the original dimensions of the house; refurbishing & recreating built-ins and finishes in local materials (handcrafted vertical-grain Douglas Fir cabinetry, repurposed maple floors) and enhancing materials and fixtures. Bathrooms are lined in Heath tile, the iconic California tile and ceramics company.
