About this property

Bear Historic Home

Grand views await you in this well-appointed vacation home. Close to golf, water recreation, fishing and hunting.
This property is a true piece of American History. The home was built in 1900 for William Bear, who stood with Chief Standing Bear to challenge the Federal Government in Court. It was moved to Niobrara Village, added onto and updated in 2008. There are 180-degree views of the Missouri River with the Standing Bear Bridge to the East, from every part of the home.
Entering through the front door is the original main level of the house. The wood floors, doors and accents built in 1900, remain intact. Adding to the beauty of the parlor is a Diamond Willow staircase built by Keith Eckmann in 2008.
The location of this home provides year around opportunities of sporting, recreation, and family gatherings. Ample opportunities for water activities in the Niobrara, Missouri and Lewis and Clark Lake.

For security, there are two outside cameras on the property. One shows the front porch and front door. The other captures the driveway.

Just as beautiful as the pictures
This is one of the most beautiful properties. The view of the Missouri River and the bridge over the river is stunning. As you enjoy the big deck off the kitchen there is a vast view of the area. The bedrooms were all wonderful and spacious. The kitchen was very well stocked. Everything was very clean. Book it!!!!

A native Ponca tribal member, my family was in the Niobrara and Verdel River valleys from 1840s to the 1940s. My father (Harold Franklin) was born in Verdel in 1927 and the family moved out west to Oregon in the 40s. My Ponca lineage goes back to Mele La Charite’ in 1840s. From La Charite’ to the Sherman’s and then to the Franklin’s. My great, great, Grandfather, Justice Sherman is buried in the L’Eau Qui Court Cemetery just up the hill from this very house.

Why they chose this property

I fell in love with this house as soon as I saw it. Then as we started learning the history of the house and how it was a Ponca allotment house built in 1900 for William Bear and where many many Ponca tribal meetings and ceremonies were held. It is very possible that my grandfather and grandmother were married in this very house.
The original house was located in the Raymond Township, about 5 miles from the present location, very close to the present-day location of the Ponca Tribal ceremonial grounds. The house was eventually left abandoned and derelict. In 2008 Keith Eckman relocated and rebuilt the house in its present location.
