About this property

Luxury in a Historic Landmark-great restaurants within walking distance!

This house is a designated historic landmark, proudly recognized by the town for its deep roots in Buffalo’s history and its connection to the War of 1812. We’re honored to share this special piece of the past with our guests.

Stay just minutes from top destinations: 32 min to Highmark Stadium (Buffalo Bills), 15 min to Buffalo/Niagara Airport, and 45 min to Niagara Falls. We're close to Buffalo’s colleges—ideal for Parent Weekend or student drop-off—and under 30 min from vibrant Downtown Buffalo with theaters, restaurants, and nightlife.

To the east, explore Darien Lake Theme Park (25 min), Akron Falls (15 min), Batavia (30 min), and the Rochester area (60 min). Guests often say they wish they’d stayed longer to enjoy the peaceful home and friendly neighborhood.

In spring, walk to a Saturday farmers market, hike nearby trails, fish the local pond, ride scenic bike paths, or relax at the park just across the street—perfect for families!

Enjoy private access to the house in a quiet, welcoming neighborhood. Upstairs features three comfortable bedrooms for eight to sleep, and two full bathrooms. The main floor includes a spacious dining and living area, a foyer, a half bath, the unique “Rocker Room” (circa 1820), and a charming “Vintage Kitchen” (1950).

All bedrooms feature high-end mattresses—Saatva, Winkbed, and Aireloom—dressed in soft, hypoallergenic sheets, pillows, and blankets. Two full bathrooms are located upstairs, stocked with plenty of towels, toilet paper, hand soap, and body wash.

Master King Bedroom:
Includes a king bed and twin beds, one of which is in a former sewing annex with a built-in 1947 wall ironing board and walk-in closet. The original soft pine floors from the 1860s and vintage 1940s shutters add charm. Shares a hallway bathroom with the Canopy Room.

Rose Room:
Named after my daughter, whose rose artwork decorates the space. Features a queen bed, electric fireplace, and en suite bathroom with new tile and a hand-thrown vessel sink crafted by my husband Jack.

Canopy Room:
Located in the older part of the house, it features exposed beams, a queen canopy bed, antique furniture, and milk glass accents. Once servant quarters in the 1940s, it still has a steep, unused back staircase. Shares a hallway bath with the Master King room. Guests often call it the most romantic room.

The dining/living room is perfect for enjoying takeout or catered meals from 9 nearby restaurants—all within walking distance—offering everything from burgers and pizza to gourmet dishes. A house binder includes menus and recommendations. There’s also a small farm brewery close by, run by my husband!

This kitchen is a true throwback, installed in1947—original cabinetry, brick walls likely from the 1800s, and many vintage items on display and for your use. It includes countertop appliances: a 2-burner induction cooktop, George Foreman Grill, cottage-size fridge, vintage wall oven (from 1955—and still working!), microwave, Keurig (pods provided), coffee pot, toaster, and blender. We provide vintage dishes, mugs, bowls, silverware, wine glasses, and all kinds of coffee and sweeteners. No dishwasher—so please wash what you use. Cleaning supplies and trash bags are provided.

Just beyond the kitchen is the home's original room, with a large fireplace and rocking chairs. The unpainted plaster walls are original. In winter, we’ll prepare your first wood fire for free, using hardwood from our property. A small fee applies for extra fires. We’ll show you how to safely enjoy it when you arrive.

We recently added a Smart TV in the living room. Please remember your own passwords to the streaming services you prefer. Our space invites families to talk over a puzzle, play games and enjoy the area. Several of our guests mentioned they didn't even turn on the TV, but really enjoyed the puzzle on the piano!

Like I said, the property is a work in progress. You might see us in the barn outback, working in there to open a ceramic studio. Currently there are several pieces of pottery in the house that Jack made, some even are for sale. We hope in the summer to offer "Come and Play in Clay...and Stay!" If you want to know the history of this home or know why we named it the Honeyhouse, just ask!

Wedding weekend

Plenty of room in the place and the beds were comfortable. Low beams in places if you are over 6 ft and we couldn't get the football games on TV. But it was a lovely place to stay in clarence at a great price.

fantastic place!

This is the second time I’ve had friends / family stay at this residences. A really unique property with a great backstory and wonderful hosts. Very comfortable place to stay. My group this time are really experienced travelers with many travel books / features to their names. They all loved it. A perfect headquarters to explore all the WNY has to offer. (The first visit was a for a family wedding.) It will certainly be my go-to place for future visitors.

Beautiful week!

We had the unique opportunity to stay at this house with our 4 young children ages 8months, 3,5, and7. We messaged sue prior to booking to make sure this property was suitable for a family our size and she was so accommodating and encouraging. What sold us on this place was the stunning park with bike paths directly across the street. In the house Sue reassured us that breakable things were out of reach and she had toys and books for the kiddos which was a lifesaver. Clarence is absolutely charming with excellent restaurants within walking distance. We planned some crock pot meals for the kids, I will say the kitchen is not super conducive for cooking large family meals, so plan to eat out or make simple meals here. There is also no washer and dryer and nearest laundromat was about 15 min away so be sure to plan accordingly. During our stay we went to Niagara State Park twice about 40min away and we went to the Buffalo children’s museum about 25 min away. We really could have stayed longer and just stayed in Clarence doing some outdoor exploring at the park, my kids could have spent all day here. The house is very spacious with great bed arrangements for young kids as well which was another favorite feature for us. You can tell sue loves this house and sharing it with people, we hope to be back someday!

Unique and historic home - so comfortable and accommodating!

The house is full of charm with notes from Sue and Jack (the amazing hosts) to help us make the stay most comfortable as well as learn about the history throughout the house. We were about 30 min to Buffalo and Niagara Falls so easy to get to but stayed in a quaint and beautiful town away from the hustle. They shared a ton of great recommendations for food, drink and shopping to make the most of our stay locally. They checked in to make sure we had what was needed and were available for any questions if it came up! Would 1000% recommend - only regret was I forgot to sign the book! Thanks for an amazing stay Sue and Jack!

Wonderful family home!

We spent Thanksgiving week in Honey House in Clarence. We had a grand time hanging out in the house and also enjoying Clarence and Buffalo. The House was spacious -- big dining table for computers, games or eating. There was plenty of room in the living room for football watching. The bedrooms were also spacious and beds very comfortable. The bathrooms were updated and there was plenty of hot water for the five of us. Sue and Jack are amazing hosts with check ins to make sure we were comfortable and needing anything. The five of us had such a good time admiring the art, antique items and artifacts that are in the house. We also took Sue's recommendations and ate in 4 of Clarence's restaurants that were all walking distance to the house. Sue was so helpful before we arrived, during our visit and also after we departed. I left a valuable item in the house and she sent it to me. You don't get that service if you stay in a hotel! We have family in Buffalo and I am sure if we come to visit, Honey House will be our home away from home.

In Town for a Family Wedding Weekend

Sue and Jack have such a beautiful, spacious and welcoming home! They are also the very best kind of hosts - attentive (checking in once each morning via text to see if we needed anything) but very respectful of our privacy and space. The house is so spacious, clean and welcoming, with beautiful gardens, outdoor artworks, history and artifacts as well as comfortable a/c and modern bathrooms and conveniences. We recommend the Honey House highly and certainly would book again in the future!

Great Stay!

We really enjoyed our stay. The house is great, as long as you're not expecting a modern house. We weren't, so we (mom, dad, and 4 teens) enjoyed it as the bit of history that it is. Very clean, and plenty of space. Sue made sure we had what we needed and let us know of opportunities in the community, as well as about many of the restaurants in the area. Great hostess, and great house. We would definitely come here again!

Wonderful

This house and location were everything we could have dreamed of. We have a large family and the house never felt crowded, everyone had plenty of room. The little details all over the house really made it feel well cared for and extra homey and cozy. The yard was so whimsical and had an enchanted feel with all of the flowers and decor. We also loved how we were so close to everything. Walking distance to the beautiful and relaxing park, walking distance to the farmers market, the AMAZING donuts two houses up! Omg so good. All of us are already looking forward to coming back and making this a family tradition. Sue, thank you for everything! You were the most hospitable host, and it was so appreciated. Thank you for making it a wonderful stay for us all.

History and Friendliness

Upon arrival Sue gave us a nice history lesson of the place that goes back to 1820! Very comfortable and roomy. Loved the stay in the house. Communication was great with Sue and Jack throughout the stay. Couldn't ask for better hosts. The area of Clarence Hallow is a wonderful place to stay. Good restaurants, Had a nice walk to the hallow every morning for Jamakin me Crazy coffee at the Clarence Deli. Fresh made breakfast sandwiches available there also. The beautiful Clarence Park is right across the street with playgrounds and pool for our grandkids, and biking hiking on the other side of the lake for all. Absolutely great vacation!

Awesome!

We spent 4 nights here. We flew in on a red-eye flight and were exhausted. Sue offered an early check-in, gave us suggestions of local restaurants and activities, made sure we had everything we needed, and even brought us some donuts from the local bakery one morning. Although we didn’t spend a lot of time at the property, we had plenty to do. There were games, puzzles, books, wi-fi, etc. If we are ever in the area again, we will definitely be booking this property!

Sue went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and at home. I call the house our "home away from home." That is thanks to the atmosphere Sue and Jack create for their guests. Do yourself a favor and make this house your number one choice because you won't find another property like it! Traveled here with five kids and was a little concerned it wouldn’t be family friendly but staying in this historical home ended up being such an educational experience for the kids and they loved it. The most amazing stay I’ve ever had

Our stay at this property was the most amazing rental experience I’ve ever had. The property is nothing short of stunning and unique. The age and history of the property made for such a fun experience. My family and I loved having no tv and just spending the time together. We played games and did puzzles together. The touches of old and modern in the home made it feel cozy and intriguing. All the furnishings and bathrooms were lovely and very comfortable to use. The decor in the house made us feel like we were living in the past! Jack and Sue were extremely welcoming and made sure every single need we had was met before we even had to ask! Super fun experience and would definitely recommend!!!!!

About the host

Hosted by Sue & Jack Merlino

Host profile image
We live just a stone's throw from the Honeyhouse and are happy to help with anything you need during your stay. Jack, a skilled clay artist, crafted many of the home’s unique features—sinks, vases, and lamps. This summer, he plans to open a pottery studio in the barn, which is located on the same property but is not part of the rental. You might even see him sculpting clay during your visit. Sue, a retired science teacher, is your hostess and Jack’s pottery assistant. When the house isn’t booked, she hosts wellness workshops in the dining room.

Why they chose this property

When the old stone house just a few doors down went up for sale, we jumped at the chance to restore it. That first summer, before renovations began, it was used as a film set for Widow’s Point—a haunted lighthouse movie starring Craig Sheffer. Some interior scenes were shot right here!

We started by clearing overgrown trees and repairing the roof. Restoring the original windows came next—a challenge, as many were painted shut or broken. We found antique wavy glass on the property and carefully cut it to replace broken panes, preserving the beautiful lines, bubbles, and waves from 1800s glassblowers. Jack repainted the original cedar shake siding and wood trim, transforming the exterior from a dull green to a striking deep blue.

The lower level, built with 14-inch-thick limestone walls likely quarried nearby in the 1800s, made electrical and plumbing work tough—but we managed! While we added Jack’s handcrafted vessel sinks, many features are original, simply cleaned and refreshed.

The kitchen is a true time capsule, still as it was in 1947. The 1955 ovens still work, and a mason recently told us the brick walls appear to date back to the 19th century. We found and reused many vintage items left behind in the attic and cupboards. Just beyond the kitchen is the oldest room in the house, with a large fireplace, original plaster walls (left unpainted), and rocking chairs for relaxing by the fire.

What makes this property unique

Stepping into the Honeyhouse feels like stepping back in time. This summer, we hope to fill it with more antiques and Jack’s handmade pottery—and plan to offer his pieces for sale to visitors. In winter, we’ll light a cozy wood fire in the Rocker Room, and next spring, we’ll be working on backyard landscaping.

Just down the road, Clarence Hollow now features the Brick Hall, a beautifully renovated vintage church turned banquet space—perfect for weddings or events. Our home is an ideal weekend stay, just a short walk from 9 restaurants. You can dine in or bring takeout back to enjoy at our large vintage dining table.

There’s plenty to do with your family! Right across the street is a large town park with hiking, cross-country skiing, sledding, playgrounds, fishing, and access to miles of bike paths. Nearby, explore Akron Falls, Tillman Swamp, or walk to the local bowling alley for Sunday Breakfast & Bowl. Shopping ranges from antique stores to malls just minutes away. You’re also close to movie theaters, Darien Lake, Highmark Stadium, several Buffalo universities, the Buffalo/Niagara Airport, and only 45 minutes from Niagara Falls, USA.
