About this property

George Baldwin House Suite

Apartment suite in the George Baldwin mansion. This is for adventurous history lovers who seek an experience unlike a modern renovated home or new hotel room. This is not a luxury property in terms of interior finishes, it is very rustic. There is a Full size bed and a Twin bed. The apartment is mostly original but a few modern conveniences are yours, such as wifi access and a small TV with basic channels. The grocery store is 1 block away, Forsyth Park is 2 blocks away and Brockington Hall is next door. There are 2 flights of stairs to climb to this rental unit.

The George Baldwin House was constructed in 1887. Designed by architect William Gibbons Preston. This was the first commission for Preston who later went on to design many of the most famous and impressive Savannah landmarks such as the Cotton Exchange.

The property was stunning! We absolutely loved our stay in this charming vintage home. It’s just a 25-minute walk to River Street, where you can enjoy scenic views of the river and explore the shops. One thing to note is that the house is up a steep set of stairs, that you will need to carry your luggage up.

A historic architectural getaway.

We loved this stay because of its architectural significance. This was William Gibbons Preston’s first house in Savannah that he designed and it has great authentic details. So many original details, including several flights of narrow stairs, historic bathroom with orginal (or close to it) fixtures. Kitchen is modern if you need it. The bedroom is palatial and comfortable with its antiques. This was a great location for us close to the park and the historic district.Great restaurants within walking distance.

Grand old home 2 blocks from Forsyth Park. Easy walk through all of Historic District. A bit rustic, but we like the old. Delightful owners.

Historical Experience

If you're a history buff and interested in a historical experience, this is the place to stay. It's a genuine throwback to the 1800's with a few modern conveniences. Got a chance to see a stiz, predecessor to a bidet. Host was super nice and accommodating..

True Savannah

Nice weekend trip with our grand daughter for her birthday. Home is in a great location. It was clean. Bath tub with shower from that historic period so it is small. Furniture antique but we wanted that

Cozy

Great place to stay if you’re looking for something different, which we were! What you see and read is exactly what you get. Was pleasantly surprised to see there was a tower floor fan in the room! Easy directions to get in the house and room.

Very unique

This was a very unique place to stay! If you are looking for a beautiful historic home to stay in this is your place! All with the expectation of it being from the 1800s! This was perfect for our weekend trip. The bedroom was a little warm but after the ac was turned on it was tolerable. That aside we loved the home and would definitely recommend and will rebook in the future! Thanks so much for the great experience!

Neat House, but Hot Stay

The mansion was super neat. The owners were kind. We did encounter a few large roaches, but nothing we couldn’t fight off. The heat was the most difficult for us to get past. We couldn’t cool off enough to get a good night’s rest the first evening, so we left early the following evening. Showering just felt like a sauna with no air circulation in the bathroom. The torrential downpour plus the Savannah heat didn’t help matters. We just aren’t built for no air flow while sleeping or a way to cool off between outings. If you can handle the heat, this place is worth checking out.

East Hall Street Mansion

The house is very pretty with a wonderful courtyard. It was very easy to access and was in a great location. Very safe to walk around and there is a Kroger right beside the home. The suite is a work in progress!! It is very old, but clean. We had an issue with it being too hot in the room, there was no thermostat control to the suite. I called the manager and it was taken care of. The stairs leading up to the room are steep and narrow. Do not expect anything luxurious out of this property. If you are looking for just a place to sleep, this is suitable. We had a great time in Savannah, and it was fun to stay a few nights in an old mansion.

Beautiful building and fantastic area. But radiators there hot in mid of summer with extremely hot weather outside. So we have to run nonstop air conditioning… On my request to fix it , properly management saying that the radiators are slightly warm and usually people turning air conditioning temperature lower… radiators were hot and not warm, that makes whole experience of the property very disappointing.. my son slept on a small bed right next to working non stop air conditioning and in a bathroom too , radiator is hot. Also I think there is the ghost in a house. My bed was shaking during a night..

It's like going back in time.

Nice and quiet location. I was amazed that so much of the house's architectural detail has survived. My wife and I loved the place and the location is centrally located so nothing was to far to walk or a short drive. If you have never stayed in an old house before and expect a modern hotel than this isn't the place for you, but if you appreciate old world craftsmanship than you will enjoy yourself here. I also need to report that we brought our BlueAir, air purifier because it's an old building, and the air in the bedroom was "excellent". Taking a shower was interesting, but not a really big deal. There was a hair dryer in the shower room. If you plan to cook meals there, be aware that there are minimal pots and skillets. However, there is a small dishwasher, toaster, coffee pot, and everything needed to clean up after yourself. Lovely place, I'm glad we stayed.

So Very Interesting

If you want to stay in a very historic authentic location, this place is perfect. This is not a "faux" historic updated location, meaning the bathroom has historic fixtures, the furnishings are real antiques and there isn't central air. Really quite charming. The location was lovely near the park, so we made it to the Saturday Greenmarket, and the free DOT bus made all of Savanah accessible without using the car. A few cautions: the main bed is a double, so not great for two people and the guest bed in the kitchen is a small twin. The historic tub is small and narrow and a bit confusing to operate at first, and the hot water takes a bit to arrive. The toilet is in a separate room, which ended up being rather convenient. The room is upstairs, which was fine as we had little luggage. The small kitchen is functional and the only grocery store in town is just across the street. To us, it was everything we needed and a bit of real Savannah.

225 E Hall St

Very nice room with nice kitchen. The only thing we didnt like was the tub/shower. Little water pressure. Since the shower curtain totally encloses the tub,the curtain wants to cli ng to your body on both sides. Might be claustrophobic for some people.

Great Location!!

I stayed here with my brother and boyfriend and it was perfect! The location is just a few blocks off Forsyth Park and JUST around the corner from a Kroger. It made grocery shopping easy and the Saturday Farmer's Market very accessible. This location is about a mile from downtown and you do have to pay for parking downtown. My group didn't mind the walk, but I would definitely plan that into how you are going to get downtown. The house itself is very cute and very clean. The door is hard to open because you have to do a push/pull after putting in the code to get it to open. If you don't get it right you end up banging the door back and forth which I felt very bad about because I knew there were others staying in the mansion at the same time as us. We never really saw anyone else, but I heard them from time to time outside or cooking breakfast. Overall, this was a great stay! I would definitely look into staying here again if I ever go back to Savannah!

Nice place

We were able to find street parking within a block - once we parked we didn't use the car for our 3 days in Savannah. Walk 2 blocks to Forsyth Park (and get a Lavender Latte), to take the free DOT bus to get around the historic part of town. The place is cute and historic without being cluttered or kitschy. Communication was great and entrance was easy. I never met the property manager and didn't feel the need to - everything was clear up front. The full-bed was a little smaller than we were expecting, but comfortable. The small bed in the kitchen was great for our 6-year-old. Note: once the small bed goes to bed, you're a bit locked in. From the primary bedroom, the kitchen, bathroom, and exit are all through this space. Hope your 3rd sleeps deeply!I'd be glad to stay here again, and will probably call them directly

Pass!

Upon arrival, I could not gain access because the keypad needed batteries. The entry smells like dog poo, mold and cheap air freshener. The tub is gross! The curtain liners are too close to the tub. You will need to leave the curtains open for them not to touch you while bathing. Overall this place needs a deep clean, maintenance, and an exterminator (cockroaches). The location is the only compliment for this property. I do not recommend this location.

The property is hard to access. The owners would come sit out in the courtyard and look at you like you were annoying them when you came in and out. Dont try to speak to them as they turn away.

Unique experience

We loved our stay in an historic mansion in the historic district of Savannah. The suite is as pictured but even more impressive in person as you can’t get a full sense of the high ceilings and true antiquated feel of the place from pictures alone. My husband and I were comfortable with the full bed. We felt it was really quite similar to our queen at home. The mattress was a soft pillow top and the linens were comfortable. Also nice were the plentiful pillows throughout the suite which made it cozy. The tub is an antique and narrow but the updated plumbing and small rainfall shower head were thankfully modern. A person with mobility difficulties would have a hard time getting in and out of this tub however. And the staircase getting in and out would be tough for anyone who struggles with exertion. That being said my husband and I, in our 50’s and in good health managed with no issues. You also can’t beat this location, so close to Forsyth Park. If you feel like splurging on an amazing meal I highly recommend Saint Bibiana, an easy walk from the George Baldwin house. Make reservations. Also we loved Collin’s Quarter for breakfast.

I am a local resident and lucky to handle reservations at some of the coolest properties in Downtown Savannah. Please read the entire description on this one! I know the price is very exciting but this antique setting is "not for everyone" and this is a non refundable booking.

Why they chose this property

Please do not book this unit if you are traveling with someone who expects a typical hotel environment.

What makes this property unique

This is a budget priced rental in the most prime area of downtown. This is more of an "experience" rental and is not typical like a hotel. There is a window AC unit Not central air conditioning. The window unit does cool well. There is a space heater for winter (no central heat). This has basics but is definitely more like staying in an antique setting without modern finishes.
