New Cabin-On Nat'l Forest-Hot Tub-3mi to Ski-4Kings-Private Nature Trail-Fishing
**4WD/AWD with snowflake rated tires or chains is required November through March, no exceptions. Chains available for rent in the neighborhood at purgatorychains. AWD snow tire rental cars are available from Turo.**
4 Bedrooms + Loft, 3.5 Baths, Sleeps 11, 2400 sq ft
The San Juan Retreat is a brand new (2022 construction) luxury mountain home with hot tub and attached garage at the edge of the Weminuche Wilderness and minutes from Purgatory Resort and unique local restaurants. Let this be your destination AND launch point for year-round activities. Privately set on 1 acre against the San Juan National Forest with a short hike/snowshoe (0.2mi) to a secluded overlook with stunning views of Electra Lake and the Animas Glacier Valley right off the backyard! Grill out on the deck and enjoy views of the wilderness and Castle Rock and play on the flat family friendly lot. Relax in the hot tub after a full day of activities! Fully stocked kitchen with quartz countertops and stainless steel appliances. The kids will love hearing the Durango Silverton Train whistle every morning and afternoon as it passes through Cascade Canyon in the distance. 25 miles north of Durango and 25 miles south of Silverton you are in the heart of it all—myriad adventures await! We visit our home frequently, it is well cared for and we strive to keep everything in tip top condition.
Stay connected with Starlink Internet and—if so desired—work remotely from the provided desk with HDMI external monitor and desk chair (located in the master bedroom). Stream internet TV/movies on the flat screen Roku TVs in two of the three living areas (BYO passwords). The kids will love the loft play area and the foosball table downstairs! Cornhole available as well.
King beds in all four bedrooms! There are three twin XL beds (bunk + one separate) and a full size sleeper sofa in the upstairs loft, a great space for kids!
Into fishing? You will have access to shoreline fishing (May through November while the lake is not frozen) in the private neighborhood lake that is stocked with 20-in trout! Artificial lures and barbless hooks only. Catch and release. Ask us for the fishing pass!
Central heat keeps the house warm. Two mini-split air conditioning units, one in the main floor living area and other in the loft common area—to help take the edge off of the rare extra-warm summer day. All bedrooms have a ceiling fan and additional fans are provided as well—just in case. Nighttime lows in the summer average in the 40's, and are sometimes in the 50's—perfect weather for opening bedroom windows at night!
Two garage parking spots available so you can load and unload your equipment in any weather! Two 30A 240V outlets available in the garage (BYO EV charging cord).
Main living area is on the 2nd floor. One flight of stairs is required to get to the front door. Attached garage is on the 1st floor which includes one bedroom, laundry room, a half bath and a living space with couch and TV. Main floor includes 2 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, living room, kitchen, dining area and entry/mud room. The third floor includes a loft common area, 1 bedroom and 1 full bathroom.
4WD/AWD with snowflake rated tires or chains is required November through late March. Local chains available from www.purgatorychains.com. Our home is 2 mi on a gravel road from highway 550. The gravel roads are well maintained and plowed in winter, but will be snow/ice packed. A few sections of the road are at a moderate ~12% incline and can get icy and unequipped vehicles will get stuck—creating a safety hazard for the neighborhood. Please see map. If you need to rent a vehicle with AWD and snowflake rated tires please try Turo.

About the host
Hosted by Andrea and Mitch McCarthy
We re-discovered Durango shortly after moving to New Mexico and we fell in love, again! We are both originally from Florida. We treasure the mountains of Colorado and the numerous fun things to do during all four seasons. From the green vegetation in Summer, to the snow in Winter and the explosion of yellow Aspens in the Fall--the San Juan Mountains can't be beat!
We knew Durango was the spot we wanted to enjoy as a family indefinitely. When we decided to build, it was during the supply chain crunch, so we had to roll up our sleeves and get creative! Mitch harvested standing dead Ponderosa pines from our lot and nearby, milled the lumber with our mill, stacked and dried it, and used the wood for the siding that we painted and installed ourselves. The completion of our home has been a multi year labor of love that we can't wait to share with you!

Why they chose this property
Accessibility to the National Forest! Our house is one of the few in the neighborhood that has a mostly flat lot, which we love! We have 2 small children and no steep cliffs were a must! At the end of the backyard, there is a small hill that makes for really fun sledding after a good fresh snowfall. Our house also backs up to the National Forest, which offers so much! You can easily snow shoe or back country ski into the forest in the wintertime.
During the summer, there is an awesome, easy, short flat hike (<10 mins) right behind our property that leads to an amazing overlook of Electra Lake and the Animas Glacier Valley. During the winter, you can easily snow shoe or back country ski out to the overlook as well.
Our south facing lot offers an abundance of warm sun during the wintertime.
