THINGS TO DO
Dining
If you're hunting for a good cup of coffee to kick-start your adventures, we love the bulletproof coffee at Uplifted in Bingen (a cute little drive-through coffee stand).
The White Salmon Bakery makes delicious breakfast sandwiches, tasty pastries, and fantastic bread. They also have a lunch menu with lots of sandwich options- this is a good spot to pick up some food for a winery picnic. You can also find locally sourced picnic supplies at Feast Market & Deli in White Salmon.
For an old-fashioned diner breakfast, we like the Country Café in Lyle. The bacon is especially good.
Everybody's Brewing in White Salmon is our favorite spot for lunch or dinner- the food is good and so is the beer. The nachos and burrito bowls are delicious, and we also like the gyro sandwich. It can get a little crowded, but if you go early there's usually less of a wait.
Wineries
Domaine Pouillon has excellent wine, and their friendly staff will make you feel right at home. They also have a delicious cheese plate to accompany your tasting.
We love to pack a picnic and spend an afternoon in the gardens at Syncline winery. They have lawn games, hammocks, and beautiful scenery.
And it's worth going to Cor Cellars just to see their gorgeous tasting room, with sneaky views of Mt. Hood on clear days (the wine is good too!)
Hiking
There are so many great hikes in the area! Our favorite hike is the Arch Loop at Catherine Creek. The spring wildflowers are a treat, but no matter the season you'll get great views of Mt. Hood and the Columbia River. Watch out for poison oak near the creek.
For an easier stroll, check out the Klickitat Trail. It starts just a few blocks from the house, and travels 31 miles along an old rail line. The best views start from the Fisher Hill Bridge about a mile up the trail, where you walk right next to the wild and scenic river. In January and February, this is prime bald eagle territory, and if you go out just before sunset, you can see dozens of eagles flying in to roost for the night.
And if you're looking for a challenge, the Lyle Cherry Orchard trail delivers a serious climb, with views to match. This is a strenuous hike, so make sure you're prepared (and watch out for poison oak and ticks). The views are worth it all though!
Beaches
Doug's Beach is a world-class kite-surfing destination, but on calm days it's one of the best secret spots to find some shade and go for a swim in the Columbia River. It's usually not too crowded, and there are a few picnic tables right on the beach.
We also like to take our kids to wade in Horsethief Lake during the summer months- it can get a little crowded in the late afternoons, but it's a good spot (and you can rent stand up paddleboards there).
Shopping
It's always fun to take a spin through Antiques & Oddities in Bingen. They have a super eclectic mix of stuff to browse, so you never know what you might find.
