We booked this property for Memorial Day weekend after already dealing with a previous VRBO issue where our original rental was unexpectedly unavailable. Unfortunately, this stay turned into another stressful experience. At 2:00 PM on check-in day (with check-in at 4:00 PM), the homeowner called to let us know the AC had stopped working. By that point, we were already almost 3 hours into our drive and there were little to no replacement options available because of the holiday weekend. I do understand that AC units can unexpectedly break, and I don’t fault the owner for the unit failing. What was frustrating was the lack of effort to help resolve the situation. We requested a portable AC unit, but were told the owner “would not be able to do that.” The only compensation offered was a 100 refund on a nearly 700 stay or to cancel.Since we had no other options, I personally ordered a portable AC unit from Sam’sClub for over 450 to try to make the home livable. Unfortunately, once it arrived, it continuously tripped the breaker and could not be used. I reached back out to the homeowner asking for updates on repairs and received no response. We ended up spending the weekend sleeping in an 81-degree house with fans. Between the rental cost and the emergency AC purchase, this became an extremely expensive and uncomfortable trip.Again, I understand emergencies happen, but communication, responsiveness, and effort matter. I would have appreciated more support, better communication.
