This property is welcoming and well-kept, built to prioritize an amazing view, especially at sunset. We saw many bald eagles over the river during their migration! The many conveniences and amenities made for a relaxing and comfortable stay.
We enjoyed our weekend at this property. Beautiful sunset, comfortable home, and lovely outdoor fire pit and outdoor balcony. We hiked at a state park about 40 minutes away. James was super helpful and easy to reach.

On a quiet street, high above the Mississippi. Was very clean and eclectic! Loved the bean bags and lava lamps. Great place to rest after riding the river road on our motorcycles. Definitely would come back!

Thanks for the great review! We are glad you enjoyed your stay and the little things we added to help make it a fun and relaxing place to disconnect/unwind.
The views were simply put, outstanding!!!
Communication, the property and the thoughtfulness of the host was above and beyond! The driftless region is gorgeous and the views were outstanding. We recommend this cottage for anyone that wants to disconnect and appreciate Nature. We spotted many Eagles and were visited by three owls during our stay…top notch weekend!!!
James was prompt and cordial in his communications. The property and view were both exceptional. This was truly a place to find peace and "get away from it all".

Thank you for the great review Anne! Thank you for taking such great care of our place even with a large dog :) We are glad you enjoyed your stay while disconnecting and hopefully we’re able to see a beautiful sunset and the changing colors of the leaves.
Very clean and comfortable stay. The views of the Mississippi River are amazing. Saw northern lights from house but they were not bright enough for pictures. The singing birds were a delight. Love the sound of the train going by. Enjoyed our stay.

The cabin (cottage?) is spacious and well maintained with a porch overlooking a stretch of the Mississippi River. Well stocked with linens and various creature comforts. Laundry and dryer are effective and fast.
There's a steep hill with a sheer drop at the end, but not close enough to be concerning except right by the fire pit. There are some minor inconsistencies with the listing. The third queen bed is actually a twin air mattress, and there are no video games on site, at least not that our kids could find. Fortunately they're very adaptable, and this wasn't a problem.
One thing: the lock on the sliding door to the porch was broken when we arrived, and our 3 year old had no trouble opening the door on her own and going out to the high porch. The railing out there seemed sturdy enough, but it still felt like it could be a potential safety concern.
Those are minor quibbles; we had a fantastic time, and I would highly recommend the property for a spectacular stay. Just keep an eye on any little ones.

About the host
Hosted by James Haugen
I am a proud father of 5 children, husband to an amazing wife, musician, former carpenter and property owner. We both grew up around this area and have raised our family. This is our only short term rental as it is our family property and plan on keeping it in the family to pass down for generations.
Why they chose this property
This property is a very special spot located the driftless region and all that it has to offer. This place is the absolute best place to disconnect from a busy life of distractions and endless notifications. Life at the Highland Hideaway slows down and allows you to be fully present to enjoy the views and wildlife. Enjoy watching eagles soar close by, watch the stunning sunsets, large barges cruise up and down the river through the two islands located in the river below. The property has been completely updated but kept the original 70's vibe to it. The kitchen/dining room walls have a beautiful collage of puzzles installed by the original owners. The living room has two giant beanbag chairs which has been a guest favorite for chilling or reading. About 4-5 miles east is small town of Seneca which has a charming old school grocery/hardware store where you can pick up all your needs (meat, dairy, beer, liquor, supplies) We also have installed solar panels to help do our part and reduce our carbon footprint.
What makes this property unique
The property is secluded and very private. Several State parks with excellent hiking located within 20 mins. Wyalusing state park with hiking trails about 20-30 mins south past Prairie Du Chien,WI and the Effify Mound State park (sacred Indian burial grounds) and Pikes Peak State park in Iowa across the river. We offer a large fire pit with free wood for night entertainment and for those guitar players looking to jam a bit an acoustic guitar. The two car garage can be used for cars, a boat or jet skis. At the bottom of the bluff is several areas to put in your boat We have local cleaning team who is amazing at what they do and loves that people come to enjoy the beauty of their small community and what is has to offer
