Owner cancelled last minute due to “plumbing” issue

We booked this property 2 days before check in for two weekend nights. On the day of check in at 1pm, had heard nothing. I then called the host to inquire about check in instructions. He informed me that he would call the owner. They did not reach back out to us, but when I logged into VRBO 2 hours later, it showed that the host had cancelled our reservation due to a “plumbing” issue. This was during the Indian Wells tennis tournament. A past review posted this same situation, so we wanted to highlight this in case this is a strategy the owner uses if he has an opportunity to cancel for longer stays or higher rates. At the very least, the communication was terrible for a VRBO property.

Clean and plenty of room

The place was nice and clean. Did have a problem with one of the smoke alarms beeping due to the fact that the battery had to be changed.

Worst vacation experience of our lifetime

The owner of this property is a scammer. We had fully booked our stay and we were 5 minutes away from the property when he canceled on us with a plumbing excuse. We visited the property in the next two days and there were no plumbing issues. He was lying. He ruined our vacation. Our kids were upset and crying. We were homeless for a few hours and on the phone with Vrbo for 3 hours trying to find a solution. Horrific experience. Exhausted and planning to sue this scammer. Please do yourself a favor and don’t even consider this house. He should be removed from Vrbo.
