Should have trusted the critical reviews
You know when you read reviews for a property and they're mixed and you think to yourself, "Well that person said the bed was comfy, but that person said it was bad...I guess I'll just hope it's good!" That's how I felt when booking this property, and unfortunately, it was a dissapointing stay. Had I been traveling solo, I would have just left. My friend and I made the most of the weekend, but it was not a relaxing stay. The driveway was completely covered in leaves so I wasn't even sure where to pull in to the house. Inside, it smelled like smoke and the bed linens in the smaller adult bedroom were visibility dirty and covered in dog hair. There was no detergent to even do a load of laundry to try and fix things ourselves. The remote was held together with a bandaid (clean...but wth?!) and there was dirt on the ceiling and what looked like a dried pee spot on the floor. I agree with another reviewer who said this seemed like a place where they started renovations and just gave up. There's not much to do in the area either, so for a winter stay where you want a cozy cabin, I wouldn't recommend this. The positives were that the lake was nice, and the kitchen had most of the things we needed for some light cooking. When we contacted the "owner" (It's vacasa so we were texting with support) they were responsive but when it comes to cleanliness, that's something that needs to be attended to well before guests arrive. Oh and that bed...it's definitely not comfortable.

Renovated inside good location
Nice property. Owners have renovated the inside. 2 shower baths are small but nice. Kitchen renovation makes good use of the space and is laid out well with newer appliances. Mattress in master bath was.good and teenage boys didnt complain about the matresses in bunk bed room. Family room has a nice 55" smart TV. Single serve Keurig as well as a Mr. Coffee maker. Fully stocked. New or nearly new nice HVAC unit governed by Google Nest. Outside porch amd dock are.probably next on list for renovations. Large back yard with a fire pit, water toys and a dock. Plenty of space for kids to run around. Plenty for 14 year old boys to do. Only complaint was one of the bathrooms seemed to have an insect infestation. Not sure how they were getting in. Other than that the place was spotless inside. Short 15 min walk to Miller's Restaurant to get seafood or pizza. You can also rent boats there. If you have stor crazy teens, i think this is a great place.

Convenient Location
This cottage worked well for my husband and me. The inside space, especially the bathrooms, is small, but clean. The kitchen is well-stocked for cooking meals, and there is a nice selection of books and DVDs. The level yard was perfect for launching our kayak. The cottage is located in a quiet cove within walking distance to Mitchell's Marina and only 20 minutes from Smith Mountain Lake State Park. The biggest downside to the cottage is the outside area. The porch and picnic table were dirty and uninviting. The screens on the porch had not been replaced at the time of our visit which was unfortunate. A general "policing up" of the yard is needed.

Perfect Spot
The location was perfect with a private dock located in a cove just around the corner from a marina. You really could not pick a better location on the lake to be. The accommodations of the home were good. The house is designed well for what it is but there's not a ton of extra space anywhere. This is a pet friendly home so there is a bit more dirt and hair than a place that forbade pets. It was satisfactory all the same. We had a lot of rain the week we stayed so the back porch was essential for enjoying the week. The back porch rocking chairs allowed us to enjoy the outdoors even in dreary weather. They had a bunch of water toys (kayak, paddle boards) for guests to use. We had a boat and the rainy weather kept us from taking the extra time to enjoy them. All in all I would come back to this spot in the future. With better weather it would have been the perfect week.
