About this property

Captains View Nestled on the Beach

Captains View is a cozy two bedroom beach house overlooking the southern beach and bay of Cherokee Sound. Beach chairs and lay off chairs are nice for relaxing in the sun . The kayaks make for good fun over the shallow water or to fish from . Also included is bikes for sight seeing or trips to the grocery store .
The arrangement of a 14ft boat and outboard motor is your option .This boat can give you access to areas , beaches , channels , shoreline that are not able to be walked to .The front porch is definitely the most frequently used area of the home partly because of the view but also because it provides a shady, secluded, breezy spot to relax during your vacation. It is the perfect place to have your morning coffee, read a book in the afternoon, or retire after a long day of bone fishing. The Pro kayak is a nice addition for fishing the shallows .

The House is situated only a few footsteps away from the Long Dock where you can swim ,fish ,tan ,picnic and relax. There are many flat sand bars to walk on during the low tides; they are great places to find beautiful shells and sea life . Early tides bring in the fish including the allusive 'Bonefish' that rome freely along the shallow banks of Southern Bay. 'The Long Dock ' and its uncounted wooden pieces has with stood many hurricanes sometimes with little reconstruction needed . This dock is a pillar for the community and is loved by the residents, as well as non residents , both old and young, have helped maintain its condition giving them use and enjoyment. There is loads of history to be found around Cherokee from the early days of the settlement so make sure to bring your walking tennis .There are networks of uncharted paths from several hundred of years ago to be explored . There was wooden boats ,vessels and smacks built for many years on the shore of the inner creek. The art work on the living room wall will reveal that time period . You can learn more stories like this by meeting friendly locals of Cherokee and hearing about the history of this place.

Guests can request access to Watching Bay beach, on the ocean side through a private development 'The Reserve at Watching bay '. There is property for sale , with a variety of vacant lot locations .This is all within walking distance, but bicycles are great for riding through town, especially if you need to go to the grocery store. You can also rent a vehicle in Marsh Harbour beforehand to get around the island in if you wish to leave Cherokee Settlement.

The uniqueness of this home is not only what it does have but it doesn’t have. By separating yourself from a land line phone (which we do not have in the home!) you can find other ways to entertain yourselves. Cell phones do work if needed . However, keep in mind that there is free wireless internet access available so you can bring your business with you if you insist! Cable TV will give and added option for relazation and news information if needed . We hope you will come enjoy a peaceful vacation with the ones you love at Captains View in Cherokee.

We stayed in Glenn's house for 14 days! What a wonderful place to get away from it all and enjoy nature! It's the closest house to the long dock and ocean. We highly recommend booking Glenn's boat to explore this beautiful place including a secret beach accessible only by boat! Very clean and warm house, very well equipped, in an absolutely charming little neighborhood with very friendly people. Glenn was always available to answer our questions. As the house is surrounded by nature, bring a good mosquito repellent for the evening! We will definitely be back. Thank you so much Glenn for opening the doors of your paradise to us!!!!

Cherokee Bay

Great location with a nice steady breeze of the ocean. Walking distance to grocery store, gas station, laundry mat. A very nice place to relax, play, fish, swim and explore the beach for shells. Nice, manicured yard with privacy in back. We spent a lot of time sitting on the porch reading and relaxing.

A week in paradise

We loved our stay at captains view. The waters around the longdock are shallow and calm. Its great for wading and the area contains a larger and more diverse amount of sea life than I imagined. We saw live starfish, conch, sand dollars, sea urchins, stingrays, triggerfish, a damsel fish and even a nurse shark. A clear calm night makes for great stargazing on the longdock benches. Captains view has all the conveniences of home with prime location to the water and dock. You can see the ocean from both bedroom windows. The town has a grocery store in case you forgot to buy anything at marsh harbor on your way down to cherokee. Little harbor is right up the road and we visitied both dan's cave and sawmill sink further south.

An absolute slice of heaven!

I told Glenn I was afraid to write my TRUE review of his place!! I don’t want the secret to get out. This place is amazing and exceeded every expectation we had! It is truly one of the most beautiful areas that we have ever traveled to. The people of Cherokee are WONDERFUL….so friendly and a pleasure to talk with. The long dock provides one of the most beautiful views you could ever imagine….and just wait til you see the beach and dolphins in Little Bay. Glenn was a joy to work with and renting his boat was just an added bonus. We had fresh caught seafood several of the nights we were there. It was easily prepared in the well stocked kitchen. The Cherokee Food Fair, just a short bike or car ride had everything we needed to add to our seafood meals. What a dream!! We will be back to rent from Glenn for sure!

quiet and relaxing

We just spent two weeks at the house at Cherokee sound. It was an incredibly relaxing time for all of us. The house is situated on the far edge of a lovely fishing village, The people in town were great to us. Very friendly and helpful. The house has an incredible view of the water and is literally a stones throw away. The house is very comfortable and nicely appointed. The kitchen was great! AC was highly appreciated. We travelled around the island a bit and were always thrilled to come back to our lovely place on the water. We felt as if we had picked the best house and location. If you want quiet beauty this is the place. If you want bars and noisy night life go somewhere else. Lots of bonefish out front for those who indulge. The kayaks were a big plus for easy exploring. Loved our time and would go back. Go to Pete"s Pub and Gallery in Lil Harbor for lunch or dinner.

Our Captains View Experince

We already had the feeling that our holiday was going be be a good one as our host was very helpful even before we had left home. We found the accommodation to be very clean, well maintained and just as pictured on the website and therefore no surprises. The beds which are usually one of our biggest concerns very comfortable. We got exactly what we were after and that was time to relax and get away from it all for a short period of time: riding bikes, kayaking and swimming. We didn't experience the pub & restaurant 8 miles away but did visit the little community there and it too was pleasant. The nearby beach was really good, the local people very friendly and the local store quite adequate for our basic needs. We enjoy cooking so we did all of our own meals in what was a very nicely equipped kitchen. We therefore would have no problem recommending Captains View for a vacation. Thank you Glenn.

The Secret? Location, Location, Location

Absolutely the best location in Cherokee Sound for 1 or 2 couples or a small family. This clean and well appointed 2BR house is the closest property to the 'Long Dock' which appears to be the best known amenity of Cherokee Sound. The front porch and both BRs look out on the dock and the large sand flat it sits on. The water is shallow and the sand smooth making it ideal for kids, relaxed bathing, beach combing, or in our case, a bit of bone fishing. Bikes, kayaks and all accessories are stored neatly in the shed out back. The boat, if rented, is moored out front and is useful for accessing other close by flats and beaches. This is a quiet little town with 1 store and a marina, both within easy walking distance. Plan to bring and cook your own meals in the tidy kitchen. Bring your own adult beverages. Pete's Pub is 10 minutes up the road if you want a break but you probably won't if well supplied. The house is private and yet right in the center of town - center for visitors that is. The 200 meter long dock is the perfect seaside amenity and it feels like yours. The owner is local and was responsive to all requests. Perfect location for a quiet getaway. Did I say it was in the best location in town? It really is. We will be back!

Beautiful, quiet beachfront vacation.

We can't wait to return to the Captain's Nest in Cherokee. The gorgeous flats, beautiful sunsets, and bone fishing right out the front door. The people of Cherokee are surely the kindest and most helpful that we have met in our many travels throughout the Bahamas. The remodeled airport at Marsh Harbor is a stunning improvement. Upon arrival all basic provisions can be obtained at Maxwell's supermarket. The little "Island Bakery" is our favorite for coconut bread which makes the best French toast in the world, but don't forget the Johnnycake and sticky buns. Also our best recent find is the Fish House or "Skagg retail and wholesale seafood store" in Marsh Harbor ask locals for directions. They have all types of local fish as well as lobster and stone crab. There is packaged lobster for the return trip home. Jaime's Place in Marsh Harbor has the best cracked conch in the area. Glenn is a perfect host for your adventure at the Captain's Nest and has provided a lovely 2 bedroom, spotless accommodation with a small boat to truly explore Cherokee Sound. Night life is limited, but always includes our evening sunset walk on Long Dock with our favorite beverage. I have caught bonefish beside and off of Long Dock and have seen multiple big permit cruising along the dock in the evening, no takers yet. Many thanks to Glenn for sharing his wonderful beachfront home with us. We will return as soon as possible. Sincerely, Randy and Robyn R.

Our Stay at Cherokee

Had a great time staying here! The boat ran great and we were able to explore several islands, catch fish/lobsters, and snorkel right near our house. The locals were friendly and gave great fishing advice. The house was plenty of room for our family of three and had a nice sized backyard. Planning to come again next year!

Wonderful Visit

This house is a small house with the possible best location in the entire area. You view from the front porch is the ocean. The check-in was very easy. The house was very clean. The only advice I have is to get very clear directions before you land at the airport. We got a bit turned around and the directions that were given to us was "Go around the circle to the really straight road. Then when you see a flag turn onto the curvy road. Go a long ways and you're there" Also, you should be aware that there is absolutely nothing to do on the island besides relax. Perfect for us but out teenage kids would have gone bonkers.

Cozy and quiet retreat

This is the best place to stay on the island if you're looking to kick back island style. The house is miles away from the hustle of the town with an off-the-grid feel. My husband and I spent most of our time exploring the waters of Cherokee Sound and it's quaint town. You can see nearly every star in the sky from the long dock at night. Excellent shell picking, too!

Heaven on Earth

My mom and I stayed at Glen's for 2 weeks and it was nothing short of amazing. The house was clean, organized and well stocked. The location.. Crystal clear blue water that seemed to never end. We could see sting rays from the Long Dock! Glen was on-site when we arrived to touch base and give us advice on how to spend our next 2 weeks. There was never a moment while we were there that made us feel unsafe. Cherokee Sound is such a pleasant neighborhood and not too far off the beaten path but it's far enough away from everything that we were able to relax without all the noise but could hop in the car to get wherever we wanted on Great Abaco. Unless you are confident that you will not need to leave the home, a rental car is a must as taxi prices can be high. There is a grocery store in Cherokee that makes deli sandwiches and frappes, but we'd definitely suggest stopping at Maxwell's in Marsh Harbour. There's a boat repair shop that has coin operated washing machines in Cherokee. Our favorite feature at the home was the kayaks. Glen pointed out an area that we could kayak too if we wanted to be wowed. If he gives you this suggestion, listen to him because you will not be sorry. We brought our own blow-up rafts and if you like to relax- we definitely suggest bringing a blow-up raft to float on the calm waters. All of this to say that we will definitely be back. Glen welcomed us into his home and community like family, and we couldn't be more thankful. Thank you, Glen!

I'm an out going bahamian .I love the outdoors, fishing ,free diving ,boating ,taking my wave runner out for a spin and off roading in a ATV or truck. I have knowledge and first hand experience of the area and trails around Cherokee and over Abaco . I guide on the sea as well as the land .Deep sea charters and guided trips can be arranged and booked .If you have your own boat I can guide and help with sight seeing covering Cherokee area , central Abaco and its cays and almost any part of Abaco .Bird watching , remote beaches and deep woods trips are also an option for charter . Featured trips to Piggy Ville to feed the swimming pigs are very enjoyable . Deep forest fresh water caves are also a good guided tour . My education from high school in the Bahamas to College degrees in Florida help me to guide in a very detailed way . On a deep forest trip we will trail none groomed paths leading to unfrequented wooded areas and ocean beaches . A good level of fitness is needed along with certain supplies .
There are parks on the land and sea under that are under the supervision of The National Trust . These are not my usual areas but could be included . My paths will not be labeled with signs , tress and plants will be visible but no labels . Birds will be wild and very beautiful but not trained .

Why they chose this property

I purchased this home back in 1993 because of its panoramic sea-coast view. Captains View is named after its original owner Capt. Roy P. Russell J.P. This was his retirement home and may be mines as well one day! Although I didn't buy it initially to rent it out, after renovating it many friends and visitors asked me to open it up to the rental possibilities. In order to share the undiscovered area I have rented it only to a select few. This home is very precious to me and my daughters so I'm selective about who I rent to.

What makes this property unique

The house is so ideally located that once you arrive just relax and slide right in ,the beach and shallow water will wash your travels away .Bonefish.....Bonefish on the door step . Should you choose a rental car /van it can be parked close for easy access . Every where you want to go is accessible by foot, a bike or skateboard. If you come by boat the water is deep enough off the long dock that you can anchor out in the bay and see it from the porch. The two orange kayaks and the 3 person yellow kayak can be launched right from the house beach. The front porch will offer you the best sunrises and sunsets. The front porch is always a good place to avoid the sun and catch conversation with guest or locals. For people with young children they can watch their kids play safely on the beach less than 50 feet away from the porch. Another unique benefit is you don't have to go far to catch a nights meal. Simply cast out your hook and line of The Long Dock and your sure to catch a feast. The front and back areas of the house are great for children and adults hanging around ,talking, laughing and listening to music. You can crack coconuts ( careful they can stain )and make coconut water, eat sea grapes, cocoplums , catch fish and retire after eating to a nice movie in the living room. Snorkeling areas are within walking distance and a boat can get to reefs that are offshore .Captains View is a special place that many guest keep quite for there own continued pleasure .
