About the host

We are international educators who left the U.S. and our home state of Maine in 2002 to live and work overseas. We have worked in northern Greece and most recently the Mideast. We are now retired and live at Villa Koukouvayia, only leaving to visit our two grown children in the States from time to time. We have been proud to establish our new home in Western Crete, one of the loveliest communities we've ever experienced. We are American citizens, but are now retired and live at Villa Koukouvayia permanently.
Why they chose this property
Our first overseas positions were in Thessaloniki, in northern Greece; and it was during that time that we fell in love with our adopted home country. We wanted to design from scratch a property that we could share with our colleagues and extended family, and which would serve as a gathering place for friends, friendship, and celebrations, and we discovered western Crete as the perfect spot to build this dream.
What makes this property unique
The indoor and outdoor spaces at Villa K have been purposefully designed to provide opportunities for both social gatherings and quiet intimate retreat. At any time of day you can find comfortable sun or shade, space for a group chat or individual contemplation, expansive views or quiet space next to an ancient olive tree. Villa Koukouvayia is an ideal spot for groups to revel in shared experiences as well as relax in an intimate surroundings.
Villa Koukouvayia is also a wonderful place to visit at any time of year. Kissamos is a working town that thrives on agricultural business year round and some tourism in the high season. Some of the most beautiful parts of Crete can be found within a short drive from our home: Balos Lagoon, Falasarna Beach, Elafonissi Beach, Samaria Gorge, the villages of Elos, Mylia, Polyrinnia, Paleochora, and of course the beautiful town of Chania with her Venetian lighthouse and Old Town full of shops and tavernas.
