About this property
Walkable, Elegant, Comfortable, Light-Filled Home w/Pool and Garden.
Centrally located oasis to relax and rejuvenate.
Guatemala has a very imaginative spirit and we tried out new ideas with this house, such as putting the main living area "up top" so that you could enjoy more light and views than are typically found in a Spanish colonial home. When you walk into the foyer, you’ll be drawn in by the large windows that capture light and views of the bluest sky and lush garden. You’ll see the handiwork of the incredibly talented people in the craftsmanship, furniture, and art of the home. And you’ll see Agua Volcano looming above the lush surrounding hills.
The main living areas are on the second floor with inviting spaces throughout the property. Cook a meal in the modern, open kitchen and then enjoy it on the adjacent terrace with a view of the volcano. Cozy up in the “cave” with comfortable seating and an inviting fireplace. Rinse off the day’s exertions in the cooling plunge pool and then lounge around and nap in the nearby pergola or Adirondacks. Enjoy morning coffee and the warming sun from the swivel chairs on the terrace. Have drinks, play board games or make art in the formal living and dining room. Watch the game or a favorite movie in the TV space at garden level. In all areas, most of the furniture has been custom-made for comfort since Guatemalan furniture is notoriously uncomfortable.
The four bedrooms each have an ensuite bath. On the garden level, the primary bedroom has a king size bed, views of the volcano, and an outdoor shower in the private secret garden off the one-of-a-kind bathroom. On the same level is a queen bedroom with stone walls, handmade tile floors and a custom shower. Off the entry is the “bunk” room with 4 twin beds, and a special red bathroom with spa tub. Upstairs, closer to the main living area, there is a second primary bedroom with a king size bed, fireplace, marble shower and vaulted wood paneled ceiling.
The house is a 10-15-minute walk from the south of town to the main "Parque Central" that forms the center of charming Antigua. This is a UNESCO World-Heritage site with fantastic Spanish Colonial architecture dating back centuries. From our house you can walk to Central Park, to any number of restaurants, coffee shops, tiendas, churches, ruins, Spanish language schools, and the village market where fresh fruit and vegetables are sold by indigenous farmers.
From Antigua you can also take day trips up to Pacaya or Acatenango volcanos, over to Lake Atitlan, down to the surfing beaches, or visit any number of coffee farms or villages rich with Mayan culture. There are also many 1-day or 1-night packages to visit the Mayan sites of Tikal. Guatemala is a fabulous destination!

About the host
Hosted by Sonja Gustafson
We are a Seattle-based family of four that spent a sabbatical year in Guatemala 2007-2008 when the kids were in middle school and fell in love with the country. Fast forward to 2020 when we built this house as a place to relax, enjoy the *perfect* weather, make new friends, and follow our talents in the water filter and education worlds.
Why they chose this property
Antigua is a very special, UNESCO World Heritage site and is endlessly fascinating and rich in culture. When we decided to build our house we looked to the south of town, where there is less of a party scene and larger garden spots. Our neighborhood is peaceful and an easy walk to the center of town, the Parque Central.
What makes this property unique
First and foremost, it is our home and reflects our desire for a peaceful, beautiful, comfortable retreat. Our favorite spot is the "cave' which is an indoor-outdoor fireplace area with comfy cushion benches or swivel chairs. During the day you can entertain in the shade while looking at the Agua volcano and surrounding hills, and at night we can gather around the cozy fire.
It is a modern, well-built structure with both modern and classic Spanish Colonial touches. The furniture was custom-built for comfort, so you can sit or lounge in a variety of places throughout the house.
