About this property

Charming 18th-C Mas Near Roussillon & Gordes - Pool, A/C & Gorgeous Luberon View

L’Étoile is an authentic 18th-century Provençal farmhouse nestled among olive groves, lavender, and fruit trees, with gorgeous, sweeping views across the Luberon Valley.

Located between the hilltop villages of Gordes and Roussillon, L’Étoile offers the privacy of a country retreat while remaining just minutes from Provence’s celebrated markets, vineyards, restaurants, and some of France’s most beautiful villages.

The recently redesigned pool, gardens, and grounds are the heart of the experience. Spend long afternoons beside the swimming pool, prepare meals in the summer kitchen, play pétanque beneath the Provençal sky, wander fragrant gardens, or gather around the handcrafted stone fire pit as evening falls.

A fountain, illuminated pathways, lavender gardens, mature olive trees, and multiple outdoor living spaces create countless places to relax, reconnect, and enjoy the beauty of Provence.

Inside, the farmhouse retains its historic character with thick stone walls, exposed oak beams, terracotta floors, and original architectural details.

The fully equipped kitchen occupies the property’s original vaulted sheep barn, while the living room features an authentic stone fireplace perfect for cooler evenings.

Four comfortable bedrooms and generous gathering spaces make L’Étoile ideal for families and groups of friends.

Unlike many historic Provençal homes, L’Étoile is fully air-conditioned, providing cool, comfortable interiors throughout the summer while preserving the soul and character of the original farmhouse.

Whether you’re sharing long lunches beneath the pergola, watching hot-air balloons drift across the morning valley, or gathering around the fire beneath a sky full of stars, L’Étoile is a place to slow down, reconnect, and experience the timeless magic of Provence.

An enchanting oasis in Provence

A lovely property set in the foothills of Provence. We were so pleased with this property. It offered a peaceful escape in the countryside with proximity to lots of attractions and charming villages. The house and summer kitchen were fully stocked, and the summer kitchen was more than we could have imagined, including a dishwasher, half-bath, fridge, etc.. We spent many hours cooking in the kitchen and relaxing poolside after trips to the local markets. The view from the house and pool was exceptional with the ochre hills of Rousillon centered in the distance flanked by olive groves and vineyards. Also, there were lots of walking trails accessible from the house which we found using All Trails. L’etoile proved to be the perfect home base for our time in the Luberon.

Provençal paradise

L'Etoile was a wonderful choice for a vacation in Provence and I can't recommend it highly enough. There was plenty of room --and bathroom facilities -- for the six of us , a huge, well-equipped kitchen and a barbecue in the pool house kitchen area for my Franco-American family who likes to cook. The house was spotless clean, has a cozy, family feel and is beautifully appointed. The winding stone staircase was stunning. You immediately feel at home. My grandson also found a playmate in the little grandson visiting next door. Steve responds immediately if any questions and has prepared a very complete and helpful guide to the house and the surrounding area, including a list of where the daily markets -- something not to miss in Provence -- are being held as well as many of the numerous sites and vineyards to visit in the region. All was excellent. I highly recommend this home for a memorable stay in one of the most beautiful parts of France. Nancy S.

The perfect cliche'

This house is all that you would hope it would be! We stay in luxury homes all over the world and this was not a disappointment! Charming is the perfect word without calling the house small for a family of 5! We loved the house, the location, the nearby villages and markets....all a dreamy place to relax, read, and just be with each other! The beds were comfy, the decor was beautiful, the amenities were all that we needed. I would definitely return!

Absolutely Fabulous!!!

My family and I stayed at L'Etoile for one week in late June. This house is absolutely beautiful with breathtaking views of the surrounding areas. The home is immaculate and the photographs posted on the website really don't do the home justice. It was even more lovely than the photo's provided. I was concerned when I booked this home as I had never rented a villa through VRBO. The owner is honest and true to his word. He was overwhelmingly helpful, both before and during our stay. He cannot do enough to ensure that your stay at his home is wonderful. He provides a "hand book" prior to your arrival (via email) with a copy also at the home. This hand book proved to be immensely helpul, as it provides guidance regarding every aspect of the home and also regarding restaurants and suggestions regarding the surrounding areas. This was an amazing tool to have at our disposal as this was our first visit to this area. The home itself is amazing, but it is the summer kitchen that was the hit with my family. We had some wonderful dinners by the pool at night, under the stars. We purchased fresh fruits, vegatables, cheeses and olives at the local markets each day. (The "hand book" provides the location of the market for each day!) In the next town (Cousillant) we found our favorite pastry shop and butchers shop and purchased fresh pastries each day, bread and wonderful steaks, which we grilled at night. Wonderful memories, to say the least. Gordes and Rouissillion are little towns which are very close to this home. I had an amazing time shopping in these areas and purchased, amoung many other things, the most beautiful linens here. We also ate one of our best dinners at "Davids", a restaurant in Rouissillion. (Also within the hand book). I strolled into a local art gallery, struck up a conversation with the artist. who happens to be close friends with the owner! I have traveled with my family to many areas of the world and have stayed at beautiful hotels. I have previously rented expensive villas through other venues. This is a wonderful home in a breathtaking area. Do not hesitate to rent this home. You will not be disappointed. My family and I had a wonderful time and will always remember this summer vacation as one of our favorites. I would not hesitate to return and look forwad to doing so. Sincerely, Karen

About the host

We love the Luberon and we love this charming old country house. It’s the perfect place for our vacations with friends and family. It’s perfectly situated between Gordes and Roussillon, so we have the best of both worlds—village life and markets within minutes, then back to the peace and quiet of the Luberon countryside.

We have four children of our own, and they love L’Étoile, so the house is perfect for families of all ages. Over the past few years we’ve completely redesigned the pool and gardens, added a pétanque court, fire pit, fountain, and summer kitchen, and installed air conditioning throughout. But at its heart, it’s still the same old Provençal farmhouse we fell in love with over 20 years ago—and that’s exactly the point.

Why they chose this property

First, the views are incredible.

We’ve been coming to this part of Provence for more than 20 years, and it has become a second home for our family. For us, this is the perfect location—between Gordes and Roussillon, two of the most beautiful hilltop villages in France.

Roussillon is just 4 minutes away and visible from almost every window in the house. We’re close enough to pick up our daily baguette and croissants each morning, yet far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside, hear the birds sing, and see thousands of stars at night.

One of our favorite moments is just after sunrise, when hot-air balloons drift silently across the Luberon Valley. We’ve never grown tired of watching them.

What makes this property unique

In the summertime, we spend almost the entire day outside.

The new pool is surrounded by olive trees, lavender, and roses, with sweeping views across the Luberon to Roussillon. It’s the view that made us fall in love with L’Étoile, and after twenty years we’ve never grown tired of it.

The gardens have recently been completely redesigned with a stone fountain, sunken fire pit, full-size pétanque court, lavender gardens, and a small orchard of figs, cherries, pears, apples, pomegranates, and white peaches. Guests are welcome to pick fruit whenever it’s in season. At night, the gardens are softly illuminated, creating a magical place to relax beneath the stars.

The fully equipped summer kitchen has become our favorite gathering place. We cook, eat, and linger around the pool without ever needing to carry food and dishes back to the main house.

Inside, L’Étoile is the real thing—an authentic 18th-century bergerie (sheepfold), not a modern villa built to look old. The main kitchen occupies the original vaulted sheep barn, while thick stone walls, exposed oak beams, terracotta floors, and an original stone fireplace preserve the character of the farmhouse.

Unlike many historic homes in Provence, L’Étoile is fully air-conditioned throughout, making it comfortable even during the hottest summer months.

During the day, we explore the famous Provençal markets, vineyards, and hilltop villages that surround us. There are more than a dozen wineries within 10 kilometers, wonderful antique shops nearby, and countless scenic drives through the Luberon.

One of our favorite hikes begins directly behind the house. In about ten minutes you’ll reach the top of the ridge overlooking Lioux and its spectacular limestone cliffs. The view from there is breathtaking.
