The "Refuge at North Padre" is a beautiful, peaceful cabin in the northwoods of Minnesota. A perfect getaway to breathe, reconnect, or simply refresh. Single night and last minute stays are available, please inquire if interested.
Situated on a private lake (no public access) with a gradual slope to the waters edge, this property is ideal for all ages. Sharing its property boundary with the George Washington State Forest, this is a tranquil location to truly get away and rest. Wake up to stunning sunrises and the sound of loons echoing as the fog rises off the lake. Lounge by the cozy fire and enjoy a kitchen with all the amenities of home.

Located 45 minutes north of Grand Rapids, MN and just 12 miles southwest of Scenic State Park. For those looking to adventure there are many options nearby: the Joyce Estate, Little American Falls, McCarthy Beach State Park, Suomi Hills, The Lost 40, and 90 miles to Voyageurs National Park.

> Guests are welcome to use the canoe and kayaks (1 adult kayak/1 youth kayak) on the property. Life jackets for all ages available.

> The Refuge does not have central air, however it stays relatively cool and there are ceiling fans and tower fans throughout the home. A window air conditioning unit is installed in the bedroom when needed during the heat of the summer.

Failure to complete these may result in a negative review from the host.
Well behaved dogs are welcome in home, but not on furniture or beds. You must clean up after your pet and kennel when not on property. $20 pet fee/dog
Trash left outside will attract animals. Additional fee of $50 for excessive trash or trash left outside.
A $100 excessive cleaning fee will be charged for guest uncleanliness.

We had an absolutely fantastic week at The Refuge! The cabin is adorable, the perfect size for two. The lake access was better than expected. The lawn and shore were flat - none of those steep, zig-zagging stairs! The dock was perfect for fishing for large-mouth bass and perch. We enjoyed the lake toys, and I got to kayak for the first time. We loved how quiet and isolated the cabin is! No noisy neighbors, and we only saw pontoon and fishing boats on the lakes, none of those annoying speed boats or jet skis.The loudest parts of the stay were the haunting concerts that the wolves and loons put on every night. It's a humbling feeling to know that people have been listening to that song for millennia.The night sky was magnificent! I saw more stars out a sliver of the bathroom window than I've ever seen in my Minneapolis backyard! Talk about feeling small!We had a couple of delicious dinners at Trailside Restaurant and made several runs to the Antler Store for ice and other necessities. The temp was in the 90s most days, and the window A/C and two fans were very appreciated!The only downside was the lack of curtains in the living room and kitchen. The blazing morning and afternoon sun turned the living space into a sauna. It was 87 inside one afternoon! We had a wonderful, relaxing vacation, and can't wait to come back!

The property is very nice, very clean, very quiet and pleasant. The kitchen is well stocked with utensils and pots and pans. The bed is comfortable, and the view from the kitchen table looking out over the lake is beautiful. We hate to leave!

Summer vacation 2025

Great location right on the lake! We had a great time fishing, canoeing and paddle boating all week! The cabin has everything you need and it very cute inside. My husband is already talking about coming back next year.

Perfect Family getaway!

We had a blast at the Refuge! We loved canoeing on the lake, watching the wildlife and relaxing by the fire. The refuge had a ton of books and toys my 5 year old and 10 month old loved!

Peaceful and serene getaway

Property is very cozy and well furnished. The lake was very beautiful in late October and having a canoe to paddle was great for a lake this size. I’d definitely go back again anytime of year.

This property is beautiful and the location is amazing and literally could not ask for a nicer place to stay. Everything is provided for any activity you could dream of and the location on the lake is so isolated and relaxing. We will definitely stay here again if we ever get the chance!
