About this property

Newly restored 1910 Ozark Mountain Dogtrot Cottage

Built around 1910, you'll go back in time when you step foot in this newly restored Dogtrot Cottage. Sitting on top of the hill in Downtown Shirley, this is one of the few dogtrots still standing in Arkansas. It feels just like Grandma's old place! The house was originally designed with open-ended passage that runs through the center of a house, flanked by two enclosed living spaces. The living room has been restored to how it would have looked in the early 1900's. Each room in the house is themed for a different decade. The kitchen was originally in a separate building apart from the house. But when the owners added plumbing around the middle of last century, a bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room were added to the original house. The home sits on 1 acre of land with plenty of room for parking cars, ATVs, boats, etc. You'll get views of the Ozark Mountains from almost every window. Two screened in porches and a large covered front porch makes it ideal for outdoor enjoyment.

The big bedroom has a king bed and couch (w/ TV), the smaller room has two twin beds. We do have a blow up mattress for anyone needing an extra place to sleep.

The house may be old, but modern amenities abound in this unique rental. High speed WiFi, two TV's, fully stocked kitchen supplies, antique tub with shower, dedicated office and brand new HVAC.

Outside, enjoy our quaint courtyard with firepit, covered parking, charcoal grill and yard games including croque, bocci ball, frisbee, cornhole and others.

Enjoy porch sittin' ? Well, we have three porches to choose from! Two are screened in and the front porch is HUGE!

The house is a three minute walk to the antique shops and museum in the Historic Shirley Downtown and a five minute walk to the historic Cottrell-Wilson Hiking Trail. The city park, river access, historic jail and train bridge are all within a ten minute walk.

Kayaking, Fishing, Swimming, Hiking, ATV riding and Golf are all activities within Shirley and Fairfield Bay Area!

Laundry room is on property
Pets are allowed but we charge a $25 pet fee. Please keep pets OFF the furniture. The house is full of antiques, so we allow dogs under 20 lbs.

There are two security cameras on the shed. One faces the carport and the other faces the side yard.

About the host

We are the third owners of this amazing house. Built in 1910, we bought it in 2021 after it sat vacant for a number of years. We spent 21 months restoring it back to life! We have been married for over 20 years and have loved visiting Shirley ever since we started dating in College!

Why they chose this property

Emily has an Interior Design degree and has been infatuated with Historic Homes since she was a little girl. While dating, we dreamed of buying old homes and restoring them. This is our third historic home we've restored but definitely the most challenging. You can see all of our work and follow us on Instagram @cottrellcottage.

What makes this property unique

The house was originally designed with open-ended passage that runs through the center of a house, flanked by two enclosed living spaces. When the house was built, there was no such thing as indoor plumbing or air conditioning. Electricity was also added at a later date. The design of the house was intended to be a wind tunnel to heat/cool the house. You open both porch doors, windows, etc. and allow for the natural air to flow in throughout the house. We added the first HVAC in the house after we purchased it. Plumbing was added sometime last century so be aware when booking this home, the bathroom is no where near the bedrooms. All wet areas are grouped in the back of the house. The bedrooms are on the north side of the house and the living areas are on the south side with the Dogtrot enclosed hallway running between them. The house sits on a one acre lot that is completely bordered by a street. So you'll have the entire city block of lawn to play in!
