About this property

Conch in Training in Key West

The name of this one-bedroom, one full bath condo suggests the most persistent legend of Key West: that vacationers come for a week and stay a lifetime. Located in the prestigious gated Truman Annex community, this unit is the perfect place to try out island living for yourself. From its fabulous second story balcony, you will look out over white picket fences, a gleaming swimming pool, exotic birds strolling the garden-like grounds, and the sunlight streaking through amazing varieties of tropical foliage. If you, like the legend, decide to make paradise your home and stay for at least seven years, you'll no longer be "in training"-you'll have graduated to "Fresh Water Conch."

The entry to this residence is through a white picket fence, past bushes of blooming bougainvillea and waving palms, and onto the front porch. Immediately inside the front door a hardwood staircase leads up to the second story. At the top and to the right your eye goes immediately beyond the living area out through French doors to a generous open-air balcony. Amenities here include chaise loungers, and patio table with umbrella and four chairs. In one corner are a handful of brightly colored pool noodles. Standing at the railing enjoying your treehouse view, you will see the large, temperature-controlled pool just one story down and steps away.

From the balcony, stepping back through the French doors will take you into the intimate living room that's flooded with daylight. The deep-seated, teal-blue couch is comfy, converts into a queen sleeper, and is perfectly positioned for watching TV or movies on the flatscreen. Its blue hue carries through the residence as an accent color, creating a professional design aesthetic. Of course there's high-speed wireless internet, cable, and a DVD player. Below a cooling ceiling fan, a coffee table stands ready to hold your beverage, guidebook, newspaper, or whatever pleases you. Across the lovely white tile flooring, a rattan armchair adds more seating. That same wall has another set of elegant French doors that swing open to reveal the bedroom. You can enter the bedroom from the hallway closer to the kitchen as well.

The dining area with glass-top table and four chairs occupies open space to the left of the entrance stairs, conveniently close to the L-shaped kitchen. The kitchen is compact and provides everything you need to make coffee or prepare meals-appliances, dishes, pots and pans. Perhaps buy some fresh grouper at the Eaton Street Seafood Market or sirloin at Fausto's Food Palace on Fleming Street for dinner. A round window over the sink adds architectural interest and natural illumination.

Other conveniences include a stacked washer/dryer near the full bath and the queen bedroom. This master sleeping room has multiple windows framed by teal drapes. One window frames the inviting view of the balcony and beyond. A ceiling fan whirrs above, circulating air and adding tropical ambience to the room. A large closet offers plenty of space for hanging items and two chests of drawers open to hold folded items. Several lamps provide light for night time. For the finishing touch, an area rug adds interest to the white tile floor and provides a soft surface for bare feet.

Once you've unpacked and applied sunscreen, it's time to explore. Leave your car in its reserved space because world famous Duval Street is only two blocks away. Stroll through the manicured landscaping, verdant palms, and interconnecting pathways that give your Truman Annex neighborhood its park-like atmosphere. Then head out through the wrought iron privacy gate to find yourself immersed in the sights and sounds of Duval's tourist attractions. Check out the tours, museums, shopping, bars, and over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. If you're interested in watersports, there's all kinds: diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing to name a few. Don't miss the Butterfly & Nature Conservatory, boutiques, and especially the nightly sunset celebration at Mallory Square, where visitors and locals alike gather to applaud as the sun slips below the horizon. After sunset, stick around for the festivities that follow.

If the arts interest you, you've come to the right town for music, movies, plays, art galleries, lectures, artists in residence, and more. If you like beaches, your accommodations are close to a favorite locals' beach, Fort Zachery Taylor, where you can rent chairs, umbrellas, and snorkeling equipment. Bathrooms, showers, picnic tables are also available. If you get hungry beachside, there's even a snack bar serving up sandwiches, cold beverages, beach sundries, and souvenirs. When you've had enough beach, you can explore the adjacent Civil War era fort, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. If this is your first trip to the Conch Republic, a guidebook or stop at the Chamber of Commerce Information Center will help make sure you don't miss anything.
