Note on Airbnb Pricing Changes
Airbnb recently changed the way service fees are collected for hosts who use professional property management software like ours. Instead of splitting the fee between hosts and guests, Airbnb now charges the full 15.5% service fee directly to hosts. This means our nightly rates may look a little higher on Airbnb compared to some other listings, but the total price you pay on their platform as a guest is very similar to what it was before. We wanted to share this openly so you know that these differences are the result of Airbnb’s new policy, not an increase in what we earn from your stay.
WFH: Since more and more companies are allowing remote work, WFH is becoming a popular acronym. But why Work From Home, when you can Work From Bear Behind Lodge? Reliable cell coverage, strong bandwidth with no data limits and long-term discounts for your stay.
Please be aware that from October to April every year, the
government of BC requires that all passenger vehicles driving up Hemlock
Valley Road must use winter tires (Sidewall must be labelled with M+S,
or the 3-peaked mountain/snowflake symbol) and be prepared to use tire
chains when necessary. For more information, please check the Government of BC website.
And please also note that April and May are sometimes blessed with more winter snow than spring rain, and those accumulations can take a while to fully melt. Check weather reports here, or contact us directly for current conditions at the chalet to avoid surprises.
Due to the new normal created by the pandemic (remember that?), we continue to block two days after each booking to allow for a thorough cleaning of the entire home and to sanitize frequently touched surfaces between reservations. Our aim is to have you feel safe staying at Bear Behind. If you have any concerns regarding decorative pillows, throws or other items you’d rather avoid, please message us and we’ll remove them for you.
If you have not been to Hemlock Valley before, it is a quiet alpine community with no grocery or fuel services. Provisions must be brought up the mountain with you and Bear Behind has room to accommodate them during your stay.
During the good times and difficult stretches in our lives, it's the promise of Hemlock's solitude while keeping friends and loved ones close at hand that makes this place so darn special.
Please also take the time to go over our house rules before your stay. While we invite you to come, relax and escape the everyday at least for a little while, we also wish to remind you that this is our home. We love our Bear Behind and we do our best to make it charming for you. We hope you enjoy it and see fit to treat it with respect.

Jason and Angelika are excellent and attentive hosts. The home was exactly as described, very clean and comfortable in every way. We enjoyed the games and books and the outdoor spaces on the front and back decks. The kitchen was well appointed and the window fans in the upstairs bedroom kept us cool and comfortable. A wonderful stay!
The Bear Behind lodge more than exceeded our expectations. From the beautiful views and location to the ski hill to the amazing design and function of the cabin. Our host was always available for questions and we were pleasantly surprised by the many special touches when we arrived that made us feel welcomed. Definitely will be back next year :)
Even with the difficulties BC is experiencing this summer, our host made our weekend stay enjoyable and memorable. This structure shows amazing log house craftmanship and and you can't go wrong with this listing.
Can't give Jason our host enough praise - he really accommodated our needs.
We had such an incredible time at your home. Thank you for sharing it with us. Your home was perfect for our family. Fully equipped with everything we needed. Thank you for the wonderful welcome basket. The wood fireplace made our stay so cozy. Location to the ski hill was perfect. 5 stars all around!!! We can't wait to come back someday.
The Bear Behind Lodge was a great spot for our 2 families to enjoy all the mountain has to offer! Jason was a great host and made our trip seamless! Only steps to the base of Sasquatch mountain makes this location ideal for anyone looking to get on the slopes. It was especially perfect for us with small children. Being able to take a mid day break to re charge the kids batteries was just what we needed! We will definitely be booking this please again!
Bear Behind Lodge was everything the listing said it was going to be. ☺️ It is the cleanest space I think I have ever been in! Anything I could think we would need was provided, including activities for all ages. The space was cozy, roomy, and comfortable. I highly recommend this rental!!

What an amazing stay at Bear Behind Lodge. We arrived earlier than expected and Jason graciously allowed us to check in early. We were greeted with a thoughtful welcome basket and we immediately felt right at home. Any time we contacted the hosts with a question, they were quick to get back to us. Also love the proximity to Sasquatch Mountain which made our ski trip that much enjoyable. The luxury of being able to ski as the lifts open, come home for lunch and get back out onto the slopes again until dinner, is just unparalleled. The boys loved the place so much they were sad to leave! Thank you for making our vacation unforgettable. We will definitely choose to stay at Bear Behind Lodge again. Highly recommend!
The Bear Behind Lodge was better than expected! It had a large dining table for our group, with a fully stocked kitchen, with nice cooking utensils and cookware. We used both decks, depending on if we were in the mood for sun or not, and the living room was very comfortable the whole weekend. Bedrooms/showers were great! We didn't take advantage of the tv/entertainment system, but did have a rousing game of foosball! The discs for the disc golf also came in handy. This was an excellent accommodation in a beautiful location and everyone had a great time and would be happy to come back. My only negative comment would be a lie to try to keep it this place myself...the owners were great and very responsive. You won't be disappointed!

About the host
Hosted by Jason Vance
My wife and I first came to Hemlock Valley in 2015 and we fell in love with the place almost immediately. In 2019, we purchased a gorgeous log chalet and it is located on the most desirable road on the mountain. A month of hard work later, Bear Behind Lodge was born!
Since that time, I have inserted myself into the local community by volunteering with the Hemlock Valley Homeowners Association (I am presently the VP) to represent homeowners when dealing with different levels of government, businesses (like Sasquatch Mountain Resort) and the Sts'ailes first nation.
I am also a certified first responder with the Hemlock Valley Volunteer Fire Department, loving every minute I get to serve my community alongside a terrific group of firefighters!
HOT TUB: People sometimes ask why we do not have a hot tub at Bear Behind. The answer is simple when you know how deeply involved I am with the community. I am very aware of the village's drinking water situation (i.e. there's not a lot of it). It was not until recently that HVVFD was even allowed to use local fire hydrants for practices. It created too much strain on the utility’s water filtration system and it could drastically reduce the stored water level left for the rest of the community. Three days before Christmas 2022, the utility actually ran out of water! People on the hill simply had no running water in the lead up to the most important holiday period of any mountain's ski season, and there was no warning that the issue had become so dire.
There are many new builds appearing in Hemlock Valley each year, all of which have hot tubs of various capacities, and all of which are being made available to overnight visitors. If homeowners/property managers are doing what they should for sanitary reasons, those tubs are being drained and refilled often. This puts an enormous strain on our fragile water infrastructure here, and my wife and I feel strongly that we must resist the temptation to be part of the problem.
Why they chose this property
While there are closer ski hills around Metro Vancouver, Hemlock Valley is the only true alpine community in the lower mainland. I've always loved being in the mountains. Having a home on one, while still being only an hour and a half from the city, is a wonderful dream come true. Hemlock Valley is truly a gem.
What makes this property unique
There are lots of multi-unit and single family homes in Hemlock Valley. Only a few of them are real log homes, and what feels more right in the Canadian alpine than a real log home?
Of those limited log homes, there are even fewer that have been built with greater quality, or a smarter floor plan, than Bear Behind Lodge.
Perhaps just as important as those other elements, is the log home's location! Snowflake Crescent is the Park Place and Boardwalk of the mountain's Monopoly boardgame. Nestled at the foot of Sasquatch Mountain Resort's ski hill, Bear Behind Lodge has terrific views of the slopes from the back porch and side windows, while the building's Alpha side (Front) looks toward the lower village and the gorgeous mountain tops beyond. You cannot beat it.
