About this property
50' from the ocean, full ocean views from bedrooms & lanai
Our property has been a vacation rental house for 16 years.
At night the ocean sound is your lullaby to get you to sweet dreams. Kehena Makai is beautifully furnished in classic Hawaiiana style rattan. The two bedrooms both have wide oceanfront view and its own bathroom with shower. Suitable for family or two adult couples to have an low key, relaxing Hawaiian vacation. The woven bamboo ceiling and local Hawaiian art work add to the authentic ambiance.
The house is built in the traditional sugar cane style and yet newly constructed in 2001 and finished in 2007. This is a classic Hawaiian home in upscale materials and design. As you open the entry door, you see a 16' glass sliding door between you and the ocean. The kitchen, dining and seating "great room" is 17' wide with 16' high ceiling. All the furniture is rattan, the sectional, dining set and barstools with brand new Sunbrella cushions. The decor is Hawaiiana right down to the surfboards and traditional local crafts. There is a desk, TV with Wifi and a large collections of books about Hawaii culture and history. The floors through out the house are porcelain tile. The kitchen counters are rain forest marble tiles. Light fixtures are retro-tropical to complete the look.
On either side of the great room are master bedrooms with showers that have ocean views. The bedrooms face the ocean and have 6' windows. Even the windows on the sides of the bedrooms have ocean views. You will appreciate the views and the windows that all open for the sea breeze. The showers in each bathroom are quite large and feature unique local touches.
The sliding doors in the great room open onto a 35' lanai perched 40' above sea level. It is 53' to the water from the lanai. There are very few places anywhere in Hawaii this close to the waters edge. The lanai has a Made in USA dining set and 2 swivel rockers, lounge chairs and ottomans.
The lanai at the front of the house has an American made patio dining set. This lanai is private and offers full sun. Dining here can be out of the trade winds and away from the porch lights.
There is a carport and covered entry stairs in the old Hilo style as it does rain at night especially. Locals fish off the pali below the house and opihi pickers test their luck at low tides. There is no ocean access below the house due to the rough waves most of the times. And remember to never turn your back on the ocean like the Hawaiians always say, rogue waves do appear. Never let your children be downstairs at the ocean front unattended.
The laundry room is downstairs, accessed from outside the house. Besides washer and dryer there are some ice chests and beach chairs. Beach towels are in the closet in the right hand side bedroom. There's a cooler and handy bags in the laundry room and the closet upstairs, there maybe snorkel gear, reef slippers and beach toys but sometimes they get misplaced. The yard is landscaped with orchids, heliconia, ginger and monstera. There is an ocean side outdoor shower under the lanai.
Please note that we do not take same day check in and check out. If the day has a guest leaving please do not book it.

About the host
Hosted by Susanna Billings
Since 1984, we've traveled to Hawaii and the Big Island's Puna district since 1988. While we love our home base in California's Central Coast, we both are most comfortable in Hawaii. Susanna was born in China and has traveled the world for work and play. Her passion is food and wine and her kitchens reflect her tastes. John began his business in San Luis Obispo in 1973 and still shops the world for home furnishings for indoors and outdoor. That business, Daylight Home & Patio, is widely known for quality and selection second to none. John has designed 3 homes and all reflect function and comfort with a classic sense of style.
Susanna is the manager and booking contact for Kehena Makai. She is always connected and responds to questions, concerns and issues no matter what time zone or continent she is in. We love travel, love meeting people, entertaining friends and Hawaii the Big Island is one of our favorite destinations in the world. We love the air, the sky, the rain, the ocean, the fish, the people, the plants, the flowers, the animals, the lava, the passion, food and drinks, and the Hawaiiana.

Why they chose this property
Kehena subdivsion has ocean front lots and jungle, unlike other neighborhoods and Kehena Makai has a low key appeal. We like that it looks like pre-war Hawaii and blends into the neighborhood. We bought the house in 2005 and it had just been built in 2001. We loved the old Hawaiian feel of the place and felt it deserved to be more finished. We added walls, porcelain tile floors, woven bamboo ceiling, sliding doors, ocean view showers and an up graded kitchen with rain forest marble counters. The kitchen/dining/seating main room has a 17' peak and exposed beams. Ceiling fans are seldom needed as the many windows and trade winds keep the house as cool or warm as you'd like. The famous Black Sand Beach is a few minutes walk away. The Volcano National Park is 1 hour away. If you like to drive along the uncultivated coast line you can do it along one of the most beautiful drives in the world to the end of the road at Pohoiki. If you like to see traditional and historical hula cultures there's the Merry Monarch Festival at Easter. This is Puna, the real Hawaii.
What makes this property unique
With the live lava flowing in the nearby stopped in July 2018, the air quality has never been as nice as it is now. The trade winds blow over 2500 miles of open ocean.
