About this property

50' from the ocean, full ocean views from bedrooms & lanai

Our property has been a vacation rental house for 16 years.
At night the ocean sound is your lullaby to get you to sweet dreams. Kehena Makai is beautifully furnished in classic Hawaiiana style rattan. The two bedrooms both have wide oceanfront view and its own bathroom with shower. Suitable for family or two adult couples to have an low key, relaxing Hawaiian vacation. The woven bamboo ceiling and local Hawaiian art work add to the authentic ambiance.
The house is built in the traditional sugar cane style and yet newly constructed in 2001 and finished in 2007. This is a classic Hawaiian home in upscale materials and design. As you open the entry door, you see a 16' glass sliding door between you and the ocean. The kitchen, dining and seating "great room" is 17' wide with 16' high ceiling. All the furniture is rattan, the sectional, dining set and barstools with brand new Sunbrella cushions. The decor is Hawaiiana right down to the surfboards and traditional local crafts. There is a desk, TV with Wifi and a large collections of books about Hawaii culture and history. The floors through out the house are porcelain tile. The kitchen counters are rain forest marble tiles. Light fixtures are retro-tropical to complete the look.
On either side of the great room are master bedrooms with showers that have ocean views. The bedrooms face the ocean and have 6' windows. Even the windows on the sides of the bedrooms have ocean views. You will appreciate the views and the windows that all open for the sea breeze. The showers in each bathroom are quite large and feature unique local touches.
The sliding doors in the great room open onto a 35' lanai perched 40' above sea level. It is 53' to the water from the lanai. There are very few places anywhere in Hawaii this close to the waters edge. The lanai has a Made in USA dining set and 2 swivel rockers, lounge chairs and ottomans.
The lanai at the front of the house has an American made patio dining set. This lanai is private and offers full sun. Dining here can be out of the trade winds and away from the porch lights.
There is a carport and covered entry stairs in the old Hilo style as it does rain at night especially. Locals fish off the pali below the house and opihi pickers test their luck at low tides. There is no ocean access below the house due to the rough waves most of the times. And remember to never turn your back on the ocean like the Hawaiians always say, rogue waves do appear. Never let your children be downstairs at the ocean front unattended.
The laundry room is downstairs, accessed from outside the house. Besides washer and dryer there are some ice chests and beach chairs. Beach towels are in the closet in the right hand side bedroom. There's a cooler and handy bags in the laundry room and the closet upstairs, there maybe snorkel gear, reef slippers and beach toys but sometimes they get misplaced. The yard is landscaped with orchids, heliconia, ginger and monstera. There is an ocean side outdoor shower under the lanai.
Please note that we do not take same day check in and check out. If the day has a guest leaving please do not book it.
Our Hawaiian State Tax IDs are as follows: GE-172-570-0096-01 and TA-172-570-0096-01, STVR Registration #: 19-369232.

Beautiful property as described. The ocean sounds were magical, and very easy to get to the black sand beach at Kehena! This is the real Hawai'i for sure.

Wow and more wow!

This property is fantastic! Beautiful and clean! So comfortable! The kitchen is well equipped and had everything we needed. The bedrooms were perfect. But, we could not get over the amazing location. Stars! Whales! Rainbows! Waves! We did our grocery shopping on our way since this home is tucked away. Additionally, screenshot the entry code in case it’s dark when you arrive because cell service might not be available. I hope we’ll be able to return in the near future.

Return Visit

Excellent location. So wonderful we never left to do anything. Just sitting on the deck watching the waves roll in was mesmerizing and relaxing . It had everything we needed. It is showing a bit of wear in the year since our last visit and could do with a little maintenance on the very front door and sliding door. Overall, we were thrilled and already planning a third visit

Coastal delight

This was my second time staying at this location. It's a 5 star value in all regards. A beautiful home with a great layout in an amazing location. The delight of just relaxing on the lanai or going out becomes one of the most difficult choices to make. I will be back for a 3rd stay and have no hesitation recommending it to others.

Loved being in a Home!

The house was great for enjoying the ocean from the spacious lanai with comfortable furniture and from all the inside rooms! We were 2 couples so appreciated having ‘equal’ master suites. But we really loved was that it felt like a home! There was artistic Hawaiian decor and art, and the glassware and dishware were creative and really fun to use! Kitchen was well supplied. Thanks Hosts!!!

Family visit to tour area

Was located literally next to the ocean, when large waves hit the rocky coast, you could feel the house subtly shake. There is a deck the width of the house overlooking the ocean. If you enjoy looking at and hearing the ocean this property is a gem! The home is decorated with Hawaiian effects and has all the conveniences you expect. Kids enjoyed star gazing at night. A 5 star property.

Nearly perfect for a getaway

This property was truly a dream come true. First of all, reading the earlier reviews, we arrived at the property with some concerns, like the presence of bugs or the lack of AC (I need cold to sleep!), but neither were any problem at all--yes, a few bugs collected on the window screen, and we saw a few ants and were careful with food, but nothing out of the ordinary. Despite humid August heat in the daytime, the cool ocean breezes lulled us right to sleep at night. We brought earplugs in case the roar of the waves was too loud, but instead it was the perfect level for sleep. Coqui frogs weren't too loud by the house, and we only saw one gorgeous emerald-green gecko. Basically everything we were concerned about wasn't a problem. But back to the pluses. The location is extraordinary--honestly where else in the world will you find a rental home perched on oceanfront lava rocks? We spent hours just sitting on the lanai gazing at the waves. The house is decorated in delightful Hawaiiana, although the uke on the shelf doesn't have strings (perhaps to the relief of my partner). The fascinating lava-threaded Puna area is about as isolated as you can get--stock up before you come, even Pahoa has more limited dinner options than we expected--but that isolation made it incredibly special and relaxing. A well equipped kitchen made cooking easy (although when we went to grill our last night, the gas was empty--any grill fans will want to check that early). Beds are comfortable and the master bath even has a Japanese-style toilet bidet attachment :) There's an outdoor shower under the balcony which is an exquisite thrill, and we were excited to find beach chairs, boogie boards and coolers in the laundry room which came in handy on our beach excursions, although the waves at the nearby black sand beach are too hardcore for boogie boarding. (A note about that beach, yes in a rarity for Hawaii nudity is acceptable there but it's a welcoming hippie vibe and prudes can go to literally any other beach, sheesh). We love trying new vacation spots but I can say without question this is a rare spot we'd come back to, and considering the price of hotels, it's a bargain.

Even Better than I expected!

If you are like me, you have looked at 100 rentals trying to find just the right one for your Hawaiian vacation. And now you have happened upon this one. Trust me...Pick this one. I had never been to Hawaii and had never done a vacation rental house. I wanted to spend a week totally unplugged from work and soaking in the Hawaiian vibe. I could not have chosen a better place. I was a bit overwhelmed by the whole rental process, but Susanna and John promptly and politely replied to all of my questions. Soon I had booked it and was counting the days. We flew into Hilo and drove to Kehena Makai. The directions provided were perfect. I walked into the house and could not believe that it was even better than the pictures. Completely comfortable, fully stocked, and the view from the lanai...unbelievable. The house was immaculate, and we enjoyed the beds that faced out onto the water so that we could see every sunset. You can absolutely feel the spray from the ocean on the lanai and we were sucked out onto the porch for many hours reading to the sound of the pounding surf or just watching it roll in and out, mesmerized. While you have the feeling of complete relaxing isolation, there is a small community surrounding the house that is fun to walk around. Also, at the house, a large flat screen TV with DirecTV, a great wi-fi connection, and a land line phone keep you connected, if you so desire. A fully stocked kitchen let us cook most nights and a new washer and dryer let us wash clothes when we needed to. There is a front porch with a grill and a table, but we were so taken by the ocean, we never sat there. A great secluded black sand beach is about 1/2 mile east. About 3 miles west is the small community of Kalapana, which has a fabulous cafe, a coffee shop, and a small market with great prices on essentials (even better than what we paid at Safeway in Hilo). We shared a table with locals at the cafe and learned some of the history of the area. Don't miss crossing the street from the cafe and taking a walk out across the lava field to another more expansive black sand beach. Scenic drives are close as are other great restaurants (try Kaleo's in Pahoa). Volcano NP is just one hour away (although we missed it because of the government shut down). Hilo has all the necessities you need, but take it from me...once you get to this magical place, you will not want to leave.

Relaxing view

Sitting listening to the ocean waves is very relaxing. The sun doesn't shine directly on the deck, which I truly enjoyed. I did want the chairs to fully recline. The Lava Flats are close by and worth a visit. The black sand beach has no easy access route that we were able to find. My next trip to the Big Island, I will look for this rental. I did find the key box a little difficult to open and the laundry room instructions takes you to the wrong side of the house.

Hosted by Susanna Billings

Host profile image
Since 1984, we've traveled to Hawaii and the Big Island's Puna district since 1988. While we love our home base in California's Central Coast, we both are most comfortable in Hawaii. Susanna was born in China and has traveled the world for work and play. Her passion is food and wine and her kitchens reflect her tastes. John began his business in San Luis Obispo in 1973 and still shops the world for home furnishings for indoors and outdoor. That business, Daylight Home & Patio, is widely known for quality and selection second to none. John has designed 3 homes and all reflect function and comfort with a classic sense of style.
Susanna is the manager and booking contact for Kehena Makai. She is always connected and responds to questions, concerns and issues no matter what time zone or continent she is in. We love travel, love meeting people, entertaining friends and Hawaii the Big Island is one of our favorite destinations in the world. We love the air, the sky, the rain, the ocean, the fish, the people, the plants, the flowers, the animals, the lava, the passion, food and drinks, and the Hawaiiana.

Why they chose this property

Kehena subdivsion has ocean front lots and jungle, unlike other neighborhoods and Kehena Makai has a low key appeal. We like that it looks like pre-war Hawaii and blends into the neighborhood. We bought the house in 2005 and it had just been built in 2001. We loved the old Hawaiian feel of the place and felt it deserved to be more finished. We added walls, porcelain tile floors, woven bamboo ceiling, sliding doors, ocean view showers and an up graded kitchen with rain forest marble counters. The kitchen/dining/seating main room has a 17' peak and exposed beams. Ceiling fans are seldom needed as the many windows and trade winds keep the house as cool or warm as you'd like. The famous Black Sand Beach is a few minutes walk away. The Volcano National Park is 1 hour away. If you like to drive along the uncultivated coast line you can do it along one of the most beautiful drives in the world to the end of the road at Pohoiki. If you like to see traditional and historical hula cultures there's the Merry Monarch Festival at Easter. This is Puna, the real Hawaii.

What makes this property unique

With the live lava flowing in the nearby stopped in July 2018, the air quality has never been as nice as it is now. The trade winds blow over 2500 miles of open ocean.
