About this property
Luxury, AC, Adjacent to Acres of State Oceanfront Land
Cottage at the Ocean is a hub for the numerous activities offered in this area of Big Island, Hawaii. We are situated adjacent to over 500 acres of State owned Oceanfront bluffs for hiking and meditation.
This is truly a magical area! Many of my guests leave feeling refreshed and renewed. The air quality here is some of the best in the United States.
To hear the ocean all night long, to watch the humpback whales right off the coastline all winter long is epic!
Cottage at the Ocean is a luxuriously appointed 1 bedroom 1 bath 450 sq ft sanctuary space, living room, and a private lanai for your outdoor relaxation. Surrounded by gardens and lush foliage, our area is quiet and peaceful.
Cottage at the Ocean is located in a separate cottage next door to Bali Temple, VRBO #285160 and Ocean Temple, VRBO#1247897, both fully contained units with their own entrance and amenities. There is a laundry room off of Bali Temple with its own entrance that all guests have access to. Contact me to learn about special rates when renting more than one of these properties at the same time.
All units are ideal for 2 people. Guests come to retreat from the hustle and bustle of their worlds, to deeply relax, recharge, and renew themselves amidst the beautiful natural setting that surrounds us. All guests are asked to maintain this sanctuary environment when on the property.
Explore our surroundings and walk to the "end of the road", Kaimu corner for tasty breakfast and lunch options at Uncle's Foods, and our local organic smoothies and sandwich shops. There is also a convenience store open 7 days a week, from 8am to 7pm, to cover most of your basic needs ~ chips, eggs, milk, spirits, juices, etc.
On Saturday mornings, there is a wonderful Farmer's market for all kinds of delicious locally made foods, beverages, and gifts. Most Saturdays the kites are flying and local musicians play.
Pahoa is just 10 minutes away with all kinds of dining options and shopping.
Meander down the scenic coastal roadway of Kalapana Kapoho Road to Kehena Black Sand Beach, McKenzie State Park, Pohoiki State Park where you can immerse yourself in the geothermally heated hot ponds, and walk the beautiful black sand beach!
Come to relax and rejuvenate!

I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena the moment of my arrival in 2004! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the traditional Hawaiian lifestyle. The people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back.
I fell in love with this property in ’05 and purchased it with the idea of creating a sanctuary to grow old in. Prior to my ownership, this property was a part of a Buddist’s Meditation Center and it was direct oceanfront. In 1992 the lava flow preserved this property yet swept along the shoreline, taking out the beaches and forming the lava flats we now enjoy and making new beaches. This newly created land now belongs to the state.
I saw myself living at this property forever, so I renovated it for 2 years. It is my pleasure to share it with visitors who wish for a unique Hawaiian experience in a rural, beautiful, and wild setting!
Living on an active volcano on the 2nd largest mountain on the planet (next to Mauna Kea, the other volcano of Big Island) has its benefits…there is magnetic energy here that many feel to be “Supercharged”, lending itself to the dynamic and creative spirits of our community members.

Why they chose this property
Kaimu enjoys the best weather on the island, according to most Hawaiians. More Hawaiians lived here than in any other location!
Balmy nights, and 45' of rain each year, with sunshine filled days. I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the ways of old Hawaiian Living… the people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back.
We are conveniently located close enough to Hilo, the Hamakua Coast and Volcano National Park. The Saddle Road will bring you to Kona in just under 2 hours.

What makes this property unique
A natural setting as dramatic as that which Cottage at the Ocean enjoys is rare. The energy of the active volcano, and our location next to the Pacific Ocean, with miles upon miles of wild coastline to hike is truly invigorating.
Walks along the coastal bluffs directly will give you the experience of what Hawaii was like long ago. It is wild, rural, beautiful, and sensual, filling you with Hawaii's Techni-Color palette of vivid ocean and sky blues, white puffy clouds, bright greens of the variety of vegetation, and the sound of the crashing waves you hear all day and all night.
At night, you will be in awe at the number and brightness of the star-lite skies!
