About this property

Romantic Cabin on Riverfront Farm, Pet, Rural

Join the evolution in vacation stays! Looking for the perfect romantic getaway cabin? Look no further - our setting will capture your attention and inspire you. The farm's North border is one mile of the beautiful San Gabriel River. Note that the river is not visible from the cabin, but is a 5-minute walk or a short drive through the pasture to access it.

Cozy up in front of the fireplace, or enjoy the great outdoor fire pit/dining area, or take a nap together in the hammock.

We have many guests at Scurlock Farms from the larger cities and are told they truly enjoy the peace and quiet in our country setting while visiting the area.

Others are thinking of buying property and moving to the country and wanted to "test drive" staying in a rural setting.

The "Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas" with its many shops, excellent dining opportunities, is only 10 minutes away.

Some choose to stay on the farm and enjoy the activities here, while others tour the wineries in the area, try out a different restaurant each evening (several farm-to-table), enjoy the live music available almost every night in Georgetown, tour InnerSpace Caverns, enjoy Kalahari or Sweet Eats Farm, go into Austin, or shop the outlet malls in Round Rock. You get the idea...each one can have a unique experience.

Simply watch and/or feed the horses, cows and goats as they graze in the pastures, watch and listen to the bird activity from the beautiful outdoor seating area with beautiful Texas Hill Country terrain, or stroll down to the river bottom and hike along the river. Many wet a hook and enjoy fishing in the river.

Or, if you are more adventurous, help us feed and hold the baby goats - two more born today, feed apples to Duster, our horse; help gather eggs in the evenings from our free-range chickens; "drive" a tractor; pick something for dinner from the in-season garden; or if your little ones have a green thumb, they can help plant in the spring or fall; have a bonfire down on the wide river banks; or gather your own pecans from the 20 acre orchard in November.

Let me know if you would like a tour in a Polaris. I can show you around the farm, the river, hiking areas, and the animals.

Deep in the heart of Texas in the Texas Hill Country, this was the art studio of well known Texas landscape artist, C. P. Montague, one of President Lyndon B. Johnson's favorites. It was designed around centuries-old live oak trees. It is constructed of river rock picked up at the river on the property. Beautifully and comfortably furnished. New queen bed and quality linens.

Georgetown is only a 10 minute drive away and you can stroll around "The Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas", eat in one of the many fine restaurants (several farm-to-table), or attend one of the many festivals held on the vibrant Georgetown Square throughout the year.

Check out a bike at the Georgetown Visitor Center at 103 W. 7th Street on the Georgetown Square. Explore beautiful downtown Georgetown or the amazing hike and bike trails! Rentals are free!

If you prefer to walk, pick up a brochure from the Visitor's Center on the Square and go on a self-guided walking tour of the historic home and business section of Georgetown and see many beautifully restored Victorian homes and read the stories behind them.

Austin is a 30 minute drive away, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds while staying at Scurlock Farms.

Great getaway

This place was perfect for my work on a writing project. Great muffins at check in, a river to wander along, a wood burning stove for heat, everything was what I needed. The host was attentive and responsive. Highly recommend for a rustic, beautiful getaway.

Peaceful

The property is so peaceful and beautiful. We enjoyed sitting outside listening to the birds and enjoying the great breeze. Such a laid back relaxing stay. We did chill in the river as well. Sheron the Host and owner delivered blueberry muffins and gave us a tour of the farm. Would definitely stay again!

A WELL KEPT SECRET (DON'T TELL PLEASE)

THIS IS MY SECOND TIME TO STAY AT THIS LOVELY GUEST HOUSE. IT'S ALMOST MAGICAL THE WAY THE OUTSIDE BECOMES PART OF THE INSIDE. THE DECOR IS SO COMFORTABLE AND CLASSY I ALWAYS WISH I COULD STAY THERE LONGER. GOOD FOR A SINGLE PERSON OR COUPLE WANTING TO BE CLOSE TO TOWN, BUT FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD . GEORGETOWN HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED. I HAVE ALREADY RECOMMENDED THIS TO A FRIEND AND SHE AND HER HUBBY LOVED IT TOO. SHERON MAKES GREAT MUFFINS TOO!!

Highly recommend

We stayed at Rocky Overlook last year and Palette Pad this year. The Palette Pad is great for shorter stays and has a better view which we enjoyed since we like to sit outdoors. Both are unique and we felt quite at home in both. Sheron and Dan have done a great job making us feel welcome and comfortable. Scurlock farm is a large and wonderful place to explore and we took advantage of the freedom to roam from one end to the other. Between the farm animals, wildlife and scenery there was always incentive to take a walk. This is great place for a friendly family dog. It was a pleasure to return for our second visit.

The Palette Pad

An amazing place to see, visit and stay. My daughter and I loved every moment, reading all about the local artist and her selection of each rock so her husband could build the art studio. These rocks were taken from the river a short walk away. The river was wonderful with its white limestone and giant trees full of eagles flying and huge nests. We also visited downtown Georgetown and its many restaurants. We loved the Mexican food and red poppies everywhere. Loved Sheron and Dan and wanted to stay longer but will come another time. I am telling everyone what a wonderful and unique place The Palette Pad is.

Palette Pad in the country

We spent a restful (although wet) 3 days at the Palette Pad in May 2015. The place is restful and quiet and the owners are welcoming (especially the freshly baked muffins). The place is small (especially the bed) and the furniture is a little on the 'soft' side. I think it would be helpful if the furniture was arranged differently so that the bed doesn't feel like you're in a "Green Acres" episode. The property is kept really clean and the access to Georgetown is convenient. One other thing, since it is a studio the bathroom and especially the shower are quite small. Overall we had a good time (in spite of the rain), but it might be better suited for solo travel due to it's size.

Great Getaway

Great place just to sit and relax. Great weekend getaway. Historic Georgetown is a great place to make a day trip. Wonderful winery on the Main Street in Georgetown. Downtown Austin has alot to offer and one can make a day trip there and spend the whole day downtown with all the different sites to see. Everything that was in the listing description was accurate including the pictures. Very well maintained and clean. The only issue I had personally was the bed was pushed up against the wall, as there was not enough room to have away from the wall. Very difficult to get into the bed. Wonderful view from the windows inside. Sitting area outside have different points of view. Very relaxing whether inside or outside.

Charming Country Retreat!

The Palette Pad was the perfect country retreat for a quick Christmas Holiday (12/22-26). The studio has all of the amenities of home...we actually cooked a lovely Christmas dinner in the cozy kitchen. The hosts couldn't have been more gracious...Sheron's muffins are a fabulous touch! The notebooks of the farm/residents history were especially enjoyable and I felt like I was visiting my favorite family members by the end of the trip. The rock studio sits on a tree-lined bluff above the San Gabriel River valley, with large trees, lots of wildlife to watch and a lovely patio (for cook outs, visits at the end of the day or just sitting and listening to the trees). For nature lovers, the farm has great walking/hiking in pastures, the private farm road, the pecan orchard and along the river. One of the goats, Valentine, has twins, Holly and Jolly the 23rd of December. It was a special Christmas treat to watch them stand for the first time! There is really no reason to leave the farm, but the historic town of Georgetown is a quick, easy drive and the hosts have a load of ideas regarding area activities. Overall review...excellent! The studio was charming and clean and the hosts were a delight.

Perfect Anniversary Getaway

We booked this property specifically because of the river access. So glad that we did! We spent most of the day Saturday on the river, and had it completely to ourselves! Our amazing hosts encouraged us to drive our car close to the river access, so we only had a short walk to a very large flat rock next to the river. Put our chairs in a shallow spot and just chilled. A peaceful, quiet, relaxing day in nature sitting in the cool flowing water. The Palette Pad had everything we needed. The tour of the farm was interesting and fun. Ate at 3 different restaurants in town, and had amazing food each time! We will definitely be back!

Palette Pad Stay

My wife and I and our Yorkie really enjoyed our 3 nights at the Palette Pad on Scurlock Farms. Sheron provided a thorough and informative drive-around tour of their entire property including the pecan orchard and San Gabriel River frontage. We visited and fed the goats and got up close to the 2 baby goats just born 1 day before our arrival. My wife got inside the fence with 8 Black Angus cows and fed them some treats. Just a little shake of the bucket had them coming up to her for more. The farm is located a short 10-25 minute drive from downtown Georgetown, which we visited each night to enjoy some great food and drinks and even took in a well-done, very funny performance of Leading Ladies at the Palace Theatre. The whole experience was somewhat magical and a bit too short. We plan to visit again with our family of 9 and stay in the Palette Pad and the Rocky Overlook house next door…just as soon as a booking is possible. Thanks so much, Sheron, gif your hospitality. Jim and Sue and Gracie.

About the host

Hosted by Sheron Scurlock, Owner

Host profile image
Owners are the family of renowned Texas landscape artist C.P. Montague. The Palette Pad has been lovingly restored to preserve her legacy.

Dan and I both grew up in Rockdale, TX, a small town 45 minutes East of Georgetown. We attended Baylor University, then had careers in the insurance industry. Dan retired 10 years ago, and I retired in 2015. We love having full time to be able to devote to Scurlock Farms!

I am the oldest of 5 and Dan and I have lived on the farm since 1971. None of my siblings had an interest in living here, so after my Dad died in 1986, Dan and I began acquiring the farm from my Mom.

We have raised our family here, and our grandchildren have been raised on the farm. We absolutely love it and feel blessed to have had the opportunity to enjoy this piece of earth. We always look forward and enjoy sharing it with our guests.

A favorite of guests has been the free tours about the farm via a Polaris Ranger, an off-road vehicle. We visit the animals, chickens, river and hiking areas so guests know the lay of the land and they are then free to visit these areas at their leisure.

Why they chose this property

I grew up on a farm in Rockdale TX and could not wait to get away from the farm when I graduated. Dan was raised in town, also in Rockdale.

When my parents offered all their children a home spot on the farm, Dan and I were the only ones that took them up on it. By then, I couldn't wait to get out of the city and back to the country!

After my dad died in 1986, Dan and I acquired all but the 6 acres around The Palette Pad and Rocky Overlook. When my mom died in 2010 she left the two homes and 6 acres to me and Dan, knowing we would not sell them.

Both homes have been lovingly restored and we have totally enjoyed sharing them and their history with our guests.

David, our youngest son, is our chief engineer, and he and Dan enjoy doing farm things together. The past few years have really been interesting.

In April, 2009 a tornado literally blew away our 'new' 72' barn. Dan and David spent the next year building two barns - this time red barns for me, which I had always wanted.

September, 2010 we had a major 500 year flood that wiped out 1/2 mile of fence along the river and washed up mountains of debris against trees in the bottom. We have bulldozed, planted grass and Dan and David replaced 1/2 mile of pipe fence.

Jack is our Great Pyrenees dog - a fuzzy white bear. He will greet you if you walk by - he loves people, children and other dogs.

In 2013 we were fortunate enough to purchase the adjoining 60 acre farm and 3 bedroom home at the end of our drive. It has been totally remodeled and is also a vacation rental home we named Indian Bluff.

That home in on the highest bluff along the San Gabriel River for miles and offers spectacular views up and down the San Gabriel River. The Tonkawa Indians camped and hunted all along the entire farm. Guest have loved finding arrowheads!

What makes this property unique

When my parents searched for the perfect land for their dream home, they had three requirements: water, rocks and live oak trees. This piece of property fit the bill perfectly.

It is really special as the terrain is so varied. The top pastures are prairie, the steep wooded bluff divides the property down the middle, then the bottom pastures are wooded, and the river bottom forms the 1+ mile northern border of the farm with the beautiful San Gabriel River and its wide, white limestone banks. A spring-fed creek also runs across the property before emptying into the San Gabriel River.

Any of the homes provide great bird watching lodging. We have had avid birders from many states and countries and all have seen a "lifer" while visiting the farm. Did you know that 2/3 of all birds found in the state of Texas are found in Williamson County?!

Wildlife abounds and with the different terrains, the farm is a bird watchers and hikers paradise! We recently got a video of a fox crossing near the goat pens at night and just last week saw him twice near David's home, coyotes (Casey and David saw a pair's eyes in his flashlight at our house last week), and a great horned owl.
