Good access to Skytree shopping mall and Asakusa! Convenienct location for tourists!
A 70 year old traditional Japanese townhouse located in well known downtown, Mukojima, Tokyo. The house belongs to my husband who spent his childhood there. We are university professors, and the house was too small for us to live with our three children and lots of books, so we have never lived there. After 30 years, I found it quite cool as it looked remaining very nostalgic, which brought me back to the nice and old days of Japan. Now it is very rare to find this kind in Tokyo. The house was renovated nicely with its original taste. There are two bedrooms; one with a double bed and the other with two singles. The bedrooms on the second floor are floored with tatami mats. There are small but cozy living space and a kitchenette in the first floor. Bathroom with a bathtub and shower head. You will find the 'washlet' in WC. Since the house was built right after WWII, everything is made small according to the Japanese people's frame at that time. If you are way taller than 6 feet, you may find it a bit close and uneasy.

The property is really good. It is a unique experience to stay in an old building. It is also a convenient setup with separate sleeping spaces upstairs and hang out space downstairs.
Wonderful property in a wonderful location. My family and I had a great summer vacation at your home. We can’t wait to visit again. Thank you from Canada!
The property was in great condition and had a great feel to it. It is in a great location, perfect for walking around to places and with the shrine so close it is a great introduction when you first arrive into the area.
Very cute house if you want a edo style with modern touches. The location is great between two stations. The host are incredible with keeping in contact, recommendations, and knowledge of the area. I would recommend staying here.
Charming traditional house with great access to transport networks
Unique and great stay at Sumire house. There's no other house like it in the neighbourhood. The proximity to the local shrine also adds to its charm. We loved the location - away from the hustble and bustle of major tourist areas but well connected via Hikifune and Sky tree station making it easy to get to destinations. We stayed during winter, and whilst there are heaters, the house isn't well insulated, and on the ground floor in particular and it can get rather cold. Otherwise, we enjoyed our stay and our hosts were also great and accommodating.
My boyfriend, best friend and I stayed here for about 10 days. It was the most comfortable and beautiful space we have ever stayed at. The location was super convenient, quiet and pretty. There was even a shrine outside the front door! We would stay here over and over again. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
With our family we enyoyed the stay in this area and house. Coffee and food in the familymarket nearby was very practical. Some nice restaurants, the sumida river is close. We did a walk to Asakusa along the river. With subway everything was reachable, Oshiage skytree gives a good vieuw for a start. The house is clean and individual with a historical charme .The shower and air conditioner worked fine.
We enyoyed the whole stay here and could have stayed longer.
We loved staying at this lovely home in the middle of a wonderful neighbourhood. A lovely cafe nearby where we had several leisurely breakfasts - lots of places to buy groceries - close to the Skytree and Hikifune for subway rides. Just a lovely vibe here. The house was very clean, the beds were great. It is very noisy but the earplugs were a saviour! Shower is small but loved the warm toilet seat! Really no livingroom but the two chairs worked for what we needed. It embodied a history of a bygone era and I would happily come back again. The hosts were very communicative and attentive. Loved it!
I really enjoy the experience of a home in a neighbourhood where people are living their lives...the traditional shops, grocery stores, restaurants and parks are easy and convenient for you too! There are two metro stops within easy walking distance...the big one at Tokyo SkyTree and a smaller neighbourhood station. The bus stops just around the corner and we used it for short rides. The convenience of The Family Mart just around the corner can not be underestimated. Communication with the owner is always punctual, informative and personal. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this trip to Tokyo. Staying at traditional Sumire House made it special.
15-night stay, December 31st to January 15, 2024. Good pre-arrival communication(s) with Owner. Good on-site written home information & instructions. Limited kitchen functionality (small fridge, single burner cooking plate, microwave oven, fully-manual drip coffee pot. Pre-arrival notice by Owner of electrical load limitations/"nuisance trippimg". Instinctively prepared for Japan winter weather sleepwear Traditional home characteristcs include low doorways, and steep narrow 2nd level stairway. More functional living area on 2nd level than 1st. Complimentary ear plugs for sleeping appreciated due to proximity to busy road. Great modern washer/dryer. Relatively convenient (8-13 minute walk) to Skytree and Hikifune subway stations/local restaurants/Izakayas. Family Mart convenience store right next store and grocery store within a couple of blocks. Added/unexpected bonus of home being adjacent to neighborhood Shrine.
We stayed 9 nights on our recent trip to Tokyo. It is convenient to Hikifune station but we usually walked to Oshiage Station as the trains were usually more convenient.
The home is a bit older (1950s I believe) but it has some modern conveniences. There is an update bathroom, washer/dryer combo, and many updated kitchen appliances. It is a bit basic but has enough for 2-4 guests. There is also a tv avs dvd player.
The beds are very comfortable. The windows are thin so you'll hear a lot of noise from the road and the trains. It didn't bother my wife and I who live in a busy area, but my mother in law used the ear plugs provided and had no issues.
Each bedroom and the living room have separate ductless heaters/ac.
There is a family mart next door and we picked up breakfast and snacks here to have in the house.
The only drawback was being a tall person I did bonk my head about 12 times on the doorway between the kitchen and living room. But that's expected in older Japanese homes (I did the same in our machiya in Kyoto in 2018).
I would recommend this house if you want to experience traditional Japanese home living. The location is convenient to train stations while being in a lovely residential area. There's a lovely temple right next to the house, a couple of times there were musicians and services being held.
The owners were quite nice and quick to reply if we messaged with any questions.
We would definitely stay here again.
The home was in a lovely neighborhood convenient to subways, with personal touches and cultural touchstones. Our family enjoyed meals around the kitchen at the end of a long day of adventuring around Tokyo! Highly recommend for a traditional Japanese stay with modern comforts! #japanstay
We really enjoyed staying in a clean, traditional Japanese home. It was very convenient to have the market steps from the door, and there were great little restaurants within walking distance. It was a great stay!
Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this traditional Japanese house. The location is near Oshiage Skytree station (10-15 minutes walk). This might not suit some as a location to get to tourist locations but it worked well for us.Contact before and during our stay from the owners was excellent and so helpful with restaurant information and local knowledge. The beds were very comfortable, kitchen had everything we needed to have some meals at home. Family Mart is right across the road.Height of the doorways might be a challenge for anyone tall as we all managed to forget at least once but it waa part of the charm. The staircase is also not for those with any mobility challenges. There is a temple in the surrounds of the house which was undergoing renovations when we were there but so beautiful. The house is close to a main road, so there is traffic noise at night but there are earplugs supplied and it really didn’t bother us.Easy bus ride nearby to Asakusa, walk to Sumida Riverwalk and Skytree. Our family thoroughly enjoyed our 6 night stay here, would absolutely recommend it for anyone wanting an authentic experience and hope that we can return someday.
Part of my reason for returning to Japan, was to study traditional interior decorating, This house was a good example, as it was built before WW2, Other advantages were the nice neighborhood, plenty of space, laundry, good heating system, friendly owner.
Hi-de was an excellent host. The responses and information provided were accurate, fast, and much appreciated. I will be recommending this property to all my friends and family, thank you Hi-de
We enjoyed all aspects of our stay at Sumire House. It’s cozy and safe tucked away in an area filled with families. Everything you need is within easy walking distance, bus just out the door and two major stations a ten minutes walk. The owner is quick to reply to any needs and concerns. Have fun in Tokyo…we did!
We enjoyed our stay at Sumire House. Communication was excellent from the start. Very charming traditional house and nicely located, far enough from the commercial shopping areas but with good access. Family Mart across the alley. Only caveat - street noise. A good pair of ear plugs worked well for me. Super clean house, well-supplied with all the basics. Comfortable beds with warm comforters. Would definitely stay again.

Why they chose this property
Traditional outlook and modern equipments. Convenient to get to Akihabara, Ginza, Asakusa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, or even to Nikko. Bus stop right near the house and get to Asakusa by 10 mins. Less than 10 minutes walk to two major train stations.
What makes this property unique
Though it is located close to Asakusa, the major tourists attraction in Tokyo, Mukojima area is not polluted with commercial tourism. Mukojima is an old and new town. Japan’s highest tower, Skytree is located in the center of town, where you can enjoy shopping and all kinds of attractions. If you walk along the Sumida River, you will be connected to Asakusa.
