Wonderful Vacation House!

This property was perfect for our extended family group...lovely house with large kitchen (so could accommodate lots of helpers), big dining room table (so we could eat together), and big living room with plenty of chairs and a beautiful view of the lake! The dock was nice and shady during hot parts of the day, and great for fishing...rooms nicely appointed - we all loved it and had a wonderful vacation!

Great place, good water access, very comfortable. Cleanliness was not great as the cleaning crew arrived 30 minutes prior to our check-in. Deck was dirty, appliances were dirty but after a quick cleaning we had a great stay.

We had a great stay at Happy Oars. Our group of 12 (3 families) fit great in the space. Plenty of room for everyone. Kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed. Game room was a huge plus for the kids. We loved floating in the deep cove, swinging from the rope swing, and hanging in the swings on the dock. Kids alap loved the splash mat on the lake. Overall great place to stay!

Great location at Smith Mountain Lake. Loved the closest marina (Mitchell’s). House had plenty of room and kids loved the games in the basement and the canoes and paddle boards.

This home had everything you need for time away with your family. The description was accurate and we found the house to be clean and well stocked. The hosts were wonderful to work with and check in/out process was very easy. Would definitely stay here again.

We had a wonderful time at Happy Oars! This house was plenty big enough for the 10 of us (6 adults and 4 kids). We loved hanging out on the dock, swimming, fishing, and using the rope swing. The water was amazing! Crystal clear and 82 degrees. We also enjoyed grilling out on the deck and taking in the awesome views of the lake from both the deck and the family room. The beds were all super comfortable, and the kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed. Angie was very responsive and flexible with our arrival and departure times which made the trip even more fun

Beautiful and relaxing lake retreat

We had an amazing stay at this lake house with family and friends! The home was beautiful, clean, and comfortably fit our group. The view of the lake was stunning, especially at sunrise and sunset. We loved spending our days on the water — swimming, kayaking, and using the rope swing were big hits with the kids. The private dock was perfect for relaxing and launching water activities. It was also super convenient being just a short drive (12 minutes) from the general store for any last-minute needs. Can’t recommend this place enough — we made unforgettable memories and will definitely be back!

Perfect location to enjoy Smith Mountain Lake

The home was super clean and full of nice amenities. We had 14 people and had plenty of space to spread out but also areas where we could all be together. This was a family vacation for me and my two sons and their families. The hosts were great with communication.

November Getaway

A big, comfortable home -- perfect for families. Well-equipped kitchen, comfy beds, welcoming expansive play area with ping-pong table for kids & adults. Great location on a secluded cove, with easy access to the private on-site dock for fishing & kayaking. The kids took a "polar bear plunge" in November & loved every minute. This home is perfect for families -- a tastefully decorated and spacious house that is sure to please.

Perfect Family Retreat

Incredibly appointed for a comfortable stay for a larger group. Plenty of space for families to spread out and have their own space. Yet wonderful places to gather. The pool table and ping pong table provided great evenings of talking and laughing. It’s a great house nestled in trees. Extremely tidy and well decorated. Long weekend at the lake

We had a great time. 3 nights with 3 couples in our 60's. The house is beautiful, it looks like a new renovation. We had everything we needed. Rented a boat from Mitchells for 2 days and the lake and weather was perfect. We plan to visit again. Thank you.

Fun Time

We enjoyed our 2 week stay. House was well stocked and comfortable, dock area was great. Owners were were responsive when needed. Quite a few stairs to get to the dock but that also meant the water depth at the end of the dock was 8+ feet. Water was the clearest we have ever seen in 20+ years of coming to SML.

We had a Great week at Happy Oars.

We had a blast at Happy Oars. Wonderful week. House in great location to Dam and lots of restaurants by water. Kids enjoyed game room so much and rope swing was a big hit with all. Water in lake was clear and beautiful. We tubed , fished , and brought our jet ski's . Gas was easy to get to at Mitchell's . Thank you for sharing your home with us The Kelley's 😊

Wonderful, just wonderful!

This house was just perfect for our New Year’s 3-day stay! We had two families staying, both with 3 girls. Plenty of room for us all, plus extra! We especially loved the game room, the two different “living” areas, and the spacious kitchen that never felt crowded (even with 10 people milling around!). The bunk bed room is so awesome. Beautiful view as well, and a short drive to SML State Park, which was gorgeous. The property was also very clean. We had a great stay! Thank you!

Fantastic Rental

House was almost perfect. Did not appreciate spiders & webs on the inside of the home. Other than that, everything as website & all ages had a great week with paddleboards,kayaks, rope swing, dock swings and our own fishing spot for little ones. Fantastic rental!!

Excellent lake house!

We stayed as a group of four families with kids. The house is nicely shaded by large trees right on the water. With great weather we spent most of our time on the dock. Dock is located in the quiet end of the lake and kids were safely in the water away from watercraft. There were swings on the dock, kayaks, paddle boards. The house was clean and well stocked. Basement with air hockey, pingpong table and pool table was also a big hit. Hope to be back next year.

Great place for families

Wonderful place for a lake getaway! Plenty of space to relax both inside & out! We lucked in with amazing weather and spent the afternoons in the dock. We were even able to use the kayaks & paddleboards one afternoon. Evening were spent by the firepit. Indoors the kids had their own hang out spot downstairs with the game room & the TV room. Upstairs adults could enjoy the view. Kitchen was well stocked. 2 fridges & a big pantry closet to unload your groceries. We had a great time!

Perfect for our stay

the home is lovely and we plan on coming back in the future. The room arrangement worked very well for us. Our only negative was that there was dog (or other large animal) waste in the front yard so it was unusable by our children. The kitchen was very well stocked except we could have used a cutting board of some kind. Everything else was perfect.

Graduation getaway

We stayed here for our graduation from Liberty University. The lake front was great for our age range since it was in a cove. So minimal traffic came by and zero actually came into the cove. This area was not particularly deep so it isn't as concerning for those that arent comfortable swimming in a lake, but it was plenty deep to swim and enjoy. The house was clean and well equipped. We needed nothing. Communication was easy and the owners were quick to respond. Great stay!

Great home for family reunion!

Loved the house. My problem was with all the spider webs at the entrance and in the garage. Also, there was no garage door opener which made it a little inconvenient for us. Some updated kitchen supplies would be helpful, pots and pans were a little worn----we cook a lot though so this may not be a problem for most renters. Stove needs replaced, very worn. Rest of kitchen was nice and updated. Supplies were in short supply compared to most of the vacation rentals we have had. Very little toilet tissue, coffee, etc. Kind of a shame really, this could easily be a 5 star rental with just a bit of TLC. All of this having been said, my family had a wonderful time at the house. I just believe in being very honest in my reviews.

The stove was replaced 4 years ago but we will take another look at it based on your feedback. As far as spiderwebs, the area is very wooded so spiders happen. We try to stay on top of them, but alas, they rebuild overnight (little buggers!) Also, note that our listing states that we provide enough toilet paper/paper towels to get your started, but maybe this is something we can address for weekend vs. weekly renters. Thank you again.

Perfect for multiple families

We stayed at this lovely home for the Thanksgiving holiday. There were 6 adults and 3 teenagers. We chose this home for the 2 King Bedrooms which were both well appointed. The other 3 bedrooms were also set up nicely especially the bunk room which the boys loved. We also liked that the house had 2 living areas even though we seemed to always crowd into one for games, puzzles and family time. But there are two and plenty of room to spread out. All generations enjoyed the game room where we spent a lot of time. We played our version of the Olympics and my dad was happy to win! My mom enjoyed that she could cook the Thanksgiving dinner but still felt connected to everyone in the family room. We all commented that the house was set up in a way that just made us all want to be together. We have all mentioned wanting to return since we didn't get a chance to really enjoy the lake other than the gorgeous views. We loved walking through the neighborhood and enjoying the beautiful location and weather. Lastly, Angie was super responsive and a terrific owner.

Angie & Christopher bought Happy Oars SML in Summer 2014 as a family retreat and rental property to share with others who enjoy Smith Mountain Lake. We currently reside in Crozet, VA where Christopher is homebuilder (Bramante Homes) and Angie is a freelance retail analyst. We love being able to take weekend trips down to the lake to enjoy all that the area has to offer and spend time with family and friends.

Why they chose this property

We have vacationed on SML for years and have come to realize that 5 bedroom homes are a challenge to find. Our house hunt was all over the place, but this home met all necessities for a multi family lake vacation. We love that the lot and cove are private so that we can enjoy lots of dock time and floating around the lake, yet open water is a short idle away before opening up the throttle.

What makes this property unique

We first fell in love with the view from the living room and upper deck. Having morning coffee while looking at the views is the best! The moment I walked out onto the back deck, I knew this was 'home.' The rope swing is a hidden treasure. We had no idea how much fun the kids (and adults) would have on it for hours on end...
