About the host
Hosted by Sheldon and Andrea
Before we retired in 2018 we regularly visited this area known as the Bluff Country of SE MN. Also known as the Driftless Area. We were attracted to the peaceful and quaint Amish homesteads, rolling hills and friendly small towns close to the Mayo Clinic. On one of those visits we came across a beautiful restored one-room schoolhouse. My husband said "if that ever comes up for sale that's where we are retiring". Amazingly, 30 days later it was for sale and is now our home.
Along with the school house was a post and beam building with a covered patio and lovely westerly view. I had the immediate dream of transforming it into a guest house for family and friends. As our dream neared reality in the fall of 2023, we learned of the need for traveling medical professionals in our area. We decided to open it up on a per night stay or an extended monthly stay for contract working professionals; there are several employment opportunities at the many area medical facilities.
We are set on five acres with Amish and English neighbors and have an assortment of rescue animals pastured or in the barn overnight. Beyond the barn there is no farm smell. However, occasionally you will hear Rover the rooster crowing or Dusty the donkey braying. Our other rescue animals are; 2 ponies, chickens, cats, Peanuts the goat and a large livestock guard dog (she is in one of the listing photos). Because she is on site we are not able to accommodate our guests' pets.. She is very friendly but livestock guard dogs are naturally on the alert for any foreign animals entering 'their territory'. We also use electric fencing to contain the larger animals. So we are probably not an ideal site for smaller children to visit.
We are here most days for our guests' needs. Our schoolhouse home is about 200' from the Guest House. We are outside a part of most days for barn chores and lawn/garden care.

Why they chose this property
Our school house home and the Guest House are located off the beaten track on a quiet gravel road centrally located within 15 miles of several quaint small towns; Lanesboro, Harmony, Preston and Rushford. Weekdays Sept. through April our neighboring Amish schoolers pass in their buggy to and from their one-room Amish school. Sundays are church or visiting days and we often see the larger family buggies passing. In spring and fall our Amish neighbors can be seen across the road working their field with horse-drawn equipment or harvesting hay and oats in fall. In all directions the vast horizon commands your attention and awe of its natural beauty. It's a place that takes a person back a slower time.
What makes this property unique
The Country School Guest House is modern, comfortable and clean with central heating and AC. It's warmly appointed with country relics, Amish buggy wheels. vintage family quilts, Amish custom cabinetry and period lighting. There is a full well-appointed kitchen, bath with a shower and sleeping loft.
