About this property

Getaway In Oregon Wine Country

Newly built house is located on a 100 acre property of woods, vineyards and meadows. The property itself has been featured in many magazines and newspapers because the main home (our residence) is an award winning home built in 1948 and designed by Pietro Belluschi, who was a prominent Northwest architect and Dean of the School of Architecture at MIT. The 1/4 mile private road takes you over a stream, past a large pond (which the grey herons call home) and up the hill. At the vineyard, the road splits off, one part leading to the main house, and the other leading to the newly constructed Vineyard House. The 16 acres of vineyards are yours to roam about in, perhaps with a glass of pinot noir in hand. The Vineyard House itself is located beneath several magnificent ancient oaks, which add to the sense of stillness and complete privacy.
The large deck around the front of the house is a perfect setting for drinking your morning coffee, or sipping your evening glass of complimentary Menefee Vineyards designated wine. Once inside the house, you will enjoy a large living /dining room, with floor to ceiling windows that frame the valley views below. The vineyards surround this home.
The kitchen is fully equipped with all the necessities to cook gourmet meals, including a gas stove. The black granite countertops and eating island make it a delightful place to sit while some clever person whips up something delicious to eat.
There are two bedrooms - both have queen size beds. One of these beds is a Murphy bed. Should you need only one bedroom, this second room is perfect to use as a study/office for extended stays. Each bedroom has a bathroom. There is also a small laundry room - especially helpful if you have been hiking through the woods, or have offered your services to help with harvest in any of the vineyards in the area.
The surroundings are completely private. You may, however, have an occasional deer peering in through a window, but they generally prefer to eat the newly planted landscaping. A hammock under the big oak trees is a perfect way to relax after a day of wine tasting. There are many trails to hike on, and several guests have spent good parts of their days riding through the country side on bikes. If you like to fish, you can try your luck in the stream at the bottom of the property, or drive to nearby Haag Lake.
Should one choose to not cook, there are numerous restaurants in the area. A list of the local restaurants, as well as a list of the vineyards and their tasting rooms, will be available.

The Perfect Willamette Valley Cottage
We traveled to Oregon in search of Willamette Valley wines. With this cottage’s vineyard location beneath shady Oak trees, the front porch became our perch for sipping wine and watching sun and moon roses over the valley. This home was perfect for us. It is remote, but we wanted peace and quiet. Stop for food and supplies on your trip out, and enjoy the gorgeous setting once you arrive. We visited wineries in the Yamhill Carlton area as well as Dundee Hills. There was not a bad vintage in any location, but we really enjoyed Saffron Fields, Winderlea, and Lange for intimate, relaxed tastings. The differentiator for our stay was the care and special touches provided by our host Sylla. She is a great communicator, and she went out of her way to ensure our comfort and enjoyment during our visit. Our party of ;4 adults were comfortable, relaxed and well rested while staying in what we came to know as Vineyard Cottage. The kitchen had everything we needed for our food preparation. Long days exploring local wines and evenings on the porch watching meteor showers and the full Harvest Moon rising over the valley were unique, amazing experiences. This is the perfect Willamette Valley cottage!

Wonderful view
I really enjoyed that the modern house is highly functional and has an indoor/outdoor living feel to it. The property has a pastoral view and over looks a working vineyard. When we were there, the workers came to prune the vines and they often sang as they worked. We enjoyed the experience, and appreciated their work.

About the host

Hosted by Cecilia and Robert Katz

Host profile image
Our names are Sylla and Robert Katz. We live on a 100 acre property which includes our home, a working vineyard, woods and pastures, and our most recent addition, the Vineyard House. We are transplanted Californians but have lived in Oregon for many years. While we are both European born, our respective families immigrated to the United States many decades ago and we have lived in the USA for most of our lives. We do not make wine but we sell our grapes to several prominent wineries in this area and have many friends and business associates who are involved in the Oregon wine industry. When we are not involved with our vineyard we enjoy time with our children and grandchildren and travel.

Why they chose this property

We bought this property in 2005 because most of our children had moved to the Portland area and we wanted to be close-by. We also loved the beautiful setting of the Menefee property and it's proximity to Portland and the Oregon coast. Our newly built Vineyard House is on the site of a caretaker home that we had taken down . The new house was completed in June, 2014.

What makes this property unique

Vineyard House was designed by a well respected local architect. We asked him to design a cozy, intimate home that would give anyone living here the feeling that they were, indeed, living in a vineyard. We feel that he succeeded in his effort. We used a local builder whom we've known for many years who brought practical experience and a strong work ethic to achieve a great result. While we've included many photos, they do not really do justice and no photo can convey the feeling that you get when sitting in the living room, or cooking in the kitchen, or laying in bed, and looking out, seeing and feeling the vineyard and the surrounding area. We are off the beaten path so you won't be bothered by the typical urban/suburban noise, lights, or traffic. And yet, you are only a short drive away from the best that Yamhill County has to offer.
