The space

Fully furnished and includes all full-size appliances. Two TV's. Stack washer/dryer. Big bathroom. Big closets. Despite being a basement unit, the big windows make it bright, cheery and warm. Nicely decorated. Bedroom: Queen size bed. Big dresser with lots of drawers. Quite ceiling fan. Wall mounted TV. Huge closet. Livingroom: Comfortable couch and chair. TV. Great art on walls. Note: This is truly urban living. There are five apartments, one retail space and 28 climate-controlled storage units in this iconic*, 100-year-old, historic downtown building. People live and work above in upstairs apartments. Squeaky floors and urban noises (sirens/trains/autos/people) are to be expected when living downtown.

*The former O.O. Rufty General Store (longest continuously operating general store in NC) was used by Steven Spielberg as a model for a set in the movie, The Color Purple.

* We must have time to clean, restock and do maintenance. Our cleaning staff needs the entire window of time as they clean and maintain multiple units downtown. If you occupy the space before it is cleaned, they will not clean around you. If they have to return because you have not moved out by 10AM, they will charge the equivalent of one night's stay. Diane and I are licensed NC General Contractors that specialize in the adaptive reuse of downtown commercial buildings using Historic Investment Tax Credits. We live in the O.O. Rufty Building over the storefront in a magnificent apartment. We love living downtown because you can walk everywhere.

Why they chose this property

Restaurants, bars, breweries, shopping, events, our downtown park. Downtown Salisbury is a great place to walk.

What makes this property unique

The O.O. Rufty Building is named for the occupant that it was built for. Built in 1922 for the O.O. Rufty General Store, it was the longest continuously operating general store in NC until it closed. Steven Spielberg modeled the store for the movie "The Color Purple". The building is now five apartments, one retail space and 28 climate-controlled storage units in the basement.
