Secluded

We were there in late October. Leaves were bright, and falling beautifully. We couldn't see any neighbors. Loved that. The house was clean and cozy warm. There were deer in the yard. Had a great time. Playing pool and putting together puzzles and playing cards. Enjoyed Mama Mia's restaurant. Try the Big Timber beer.

Ford's Paradise

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We spent the weekend at Bear Lair. There was continuous snow and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the cold weather. We spent time skiing at Timberline, tubing and ice skating at Canaan, and sledding at Black Water Falls. This home was in the perfect location for it all. This is an older home with easy access and tons of room. Our dog, Ford, had a wonderful time exploring the large yard and looking out the large windows. We enjoyed sitting by the fire watching it snow, but this house had a fantastic heating system. The hot tub was a popular spot after a day of winter sports. The owners are currently working on updating the property. Overall, it was clean but needs a good spring cleaning. This won't be our only trip to Bear's Lair and we sure do appreciate the owners sharing their home with us.

Secluded Hideaway

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The property is very private even though it is towards the front of Old Timberline. This makes it very convenient to get in and out. The house could use some updates and some TLC. The owners appear to be slowly working on the property. The house was stocked with everything we needed. The management company was absolutely wonderful! They were friendly, helpful, and attentive. Would definitely recommend renting through Best of Canaan.

Bear’s Lair Isn’t Bare

The location was perfect. No close neighbors and no noise. A little disappointed that several of the Eateries listed on the brochure were closed, but we found sufficient places to eat. The house was outdated, but we had everything we needed. Plenty of kitchen paraphernalia to cook most anything. Plenty of towels. The beds were very firm, downright hard. Wood was provided for the fireplace and fire pit. The jacuzzi and pool table were a hit. I would recommend this place for family getaways. I would caution people who have difficulty with stairs as the living room is sunken. Fans were provided, but we got hot a few times as there was no air conditioning.

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We had a great stay here. Donna at Best of Canaan was extremely helpful. We ran out of LP gas on day one and also had trouble with the coffee pot - I called and we had replacements 28 minutes later! I expected to wait quite some time, but they were "Johnny on the spot!" The home is aging, but very comfortable. Our bed was very nice, the pool table is in good working condition, and the hot tub was very relaxing. Fridge and microwave have been updated. Deer were in the yard daily. This place is soooo secluded. Overall an excellent experience.

Bears Lair vacation

We hiked, visited local attractions & the kids caught fish on Dry Fork! They said it was the BEST vacation Ever! The bed on 2nd floor was broken & the slats kept falling out at night. House had lots of cobwebs, dead bugs & smelled pretty bad. Nothing a broom & fabreeze stick ups & spray couldn’t help. We loved the location but the house needs a good cleaning. We would stay again because the lot was great for running children!

Yearly Visitor...

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We visit Canaan each Fall for the past 20 plus years. We love the golf course, Blackwater Falls, Dolly Sods & the entire area--& just the quiet that is Canaan. So--we have stayed in dozens of units, always in Timberline--we like the easy access to the Valley View trail & Dolly Sods, plus the lakes etc... This unit was Ok---private, even though it is very close to the guard shack and to the intersection of the 2 main roads--but far enough off the roads that this wasn't an issue. It is 1 of the few with a paved driveway--very level, easy to park and a nice yard as well. The woodwork was beautiful, the sunken living area rather unique & the 2 "Master" bedrooms could be very useful for 2 families etc... . The "walk across" was also unusual--cool idea! The fireplace didn't draft well--am very experienced with fire making & got one going easily--but keeping it going was a chore--literally had to get up every 15 minutes to tend to it or it would go out--& it leaked smoke a good bit too. Beautiful hearth though--and the outside firepit was nice too. We unfortunately were blessed with an abundance of mice! Noticed this the 1st day and was given mouse traps by the agent--proceeded to catch 4 in those! It is that time of year and apparently this unit has an exterminator, but we have never had this degree of an issue in any other unit we have been in. The hot tub jets were effectively not working--or working at 50% or less at best. This was very disapointing as that is a key feature for us and you pay an extra hot tub fee. The kitchen was meagerly equipped--most basics, lots of plates but not nearly as fully equipped or well thought as most other units we have been in. Per other comments I have seen--the light switches are not labeled very difficult to figure out. We did enjoy a 2 inch early snow the day we left--just enough to make everything white! Had breakfast at Bright Morning for the 1st time & really enjoyed that. Best of Canaan is our preferred agent,

House in need of tlc

The living room furniture needs replaced and the area rug needs a good cleaning. The beds would be so much better if foam toppers or something could be used to make them less hard. The pool table room had patches all over it but was never repainted. The back deck furniture is filthy. We love the location and have so many beautiful memories here. Hoping some tlc can restore this house to its former glory bc it has so much potential.

Only stayed an hour

First let me say the area is beautiful! And the house could be so nice if it was given some TLC. But it was not worth what we paid for it. When we walked in the house it smelled very musty. The property pictures that are shown online are accurate however the property was very dirty. It needed a good deep clean in every room. We pulled back the sheets in the master bedroom and there was what looked like dog hair all over the sheets. Spider webs throughout the house, holes in the ceiling & a musty smell all over. The back deck chairs were so dirty with dirt & moss all over them, you could not even sit on them. There was no place else to sit in the back other than those chairs.Apparently this house is a non-ac unit house. I was 100% unaware of that when I booked the home for our family vacation. Usually I do not run into issues with VRBO but under amenities it did not list A/C and I did not even think to look for that. Normally, under description in bookings it list any important information that anyone needs to know. We were under an extreme heat warning and there was no way my family could stay and tough it out. Just in the hour we were there I was dripping sweat. THANKFULLY the Best of Cannon was able to move us to a different location right away that had AC and was a very clean beautiful house. The girl that helped me at Best of Cannon was very patient with me and got us taken care of immediately. My family was so appreciative!

Perfect for Family

We had a great stay at Bears Lair. Our family of 8 (4 kids, 4 adults) loved how open the downstairs was. It was perfect to hang in different spots and still be able to all mingle. House is conveniently located at base of Mountian just inside Old Timberlines gate. If you like to fish theres 2 beautiful lakes and 2 ponds to fish on.The only thing I can say could be updated are the photos online. Pictures show a room witb 2 bunks perfect for 4 siblings 3-8. Kids were super excited, and sadly disappointed when we arrived and no bunks. This however, was a minor thing.

Should be a beautiful cabin, but isn't

This poor cabin is in desperate need of fixing up. Missing siding, missing screens, ceiling and floor damage inside. The layout is great, the location is ideal, but the owners really need to put just minimal effort into taking care of the place. The hot tub is unusable so don't plan on it. None of the controls work and it's stuck on a heat setting that is way too hot to enjoy. The pool table is uneven and only has a single cue that is even slightly straight. We had to do some cleaning when we got there as it clearly hadn't been used in a while. Cob webs and dust. The beds are every bit as hard as described in other reviews. The pictures in the listing are dated, TVs and so forth have been upgraded. Does not have cable, but does have some basic form of streaming. Very secluded and quiet lot. It appears this cabin is owned by someone who doesn't want to or can't pay to have repairs done so they try to do it themselves (poorly) and clearly haven't had time or desire to get them done. There was tarps covering some removed siding and a previous water leak the damage from which had not been repaired. Big place, big rooms, everything except the hot tub worked, just be prepared for what was once a beautiful place that is in desperate need of TLC. Felt bad for it honestly. It just needs someone to love it, and clearly the owners don't. Given the price and ideal location I guess it's worth it? Wouldn't stay again unless someone fixes it up. Best of Canaan is great to work with, that entire experience was top notch.

The 2 main bedroom suites & the 3rd & 4th bedrooms have a shared connected bathroom were perfect for the 6 of us. We loved the front & back decks & firepit. The huge laundry room came in handy. No air conditioning was surprising but it wasn’t bad. I couldn’t find a hose to spray off the dirty outdoor chairs. I loved bringing my pup. Awesome location too.

Great Place to Stay in West Virginia!

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We stayed at Bear’s Lair for 3 nights in March 2024. Upon arriving, we were blown away at how cute and cozy the house was. There was plenty of space for 3 couples! The house was situated close to the main road, but there was minimal noise excluding the wildlife that frequented the yard. The house was situated close to enough to Davis and the state parks such that it was only a maximum of a 15 minute drive anywhere! Everything was lovely and clean. We definitely recommend staying here!

The furniture needs to be updated. The ottoman is still really gross and putting a blanket on it doesn't make it better. I know these homes are hard to maintain but little things can go a long way. Hope the owners get a handle on the repairs.

Nice location and property

Decent property had a very nice stay,my granddaughter loved it.She made friends with the big bear stuffed animal,she cried when we left because she didn’t want to leave him.My only complaint would be we would’ve liked to know about the canoe you can use no one told us until we asked another visitor who was on the dock by then it was our last night and it started to rain.Also you pay a $65 fee for the hot tub which doesn’t even work got in and rite back out very disappointed.Other than that we had an awesome time thank you so much for sharing your property with us.😊
