I left a brand new huge school in 1965 to move here from the Chicago suburbs with my parents and new baby brother. My father was so proud to show me the 2 room schoolhouse where I was going to attend first grade the following year. I remember crying in the car and proclaiming that " I'm not going to go to school in someone's house! " We moved into the Wilderness Lodge and it became our private home ending the business it had been as one of the original housing options at Burke Mountain. My mother wasn't too sure what she was getting herself into moving from the city to Vermont and was scared of the bears but quickly grew to love it and the friendliness of the people here. Things have changed somewhat since then. That 2 room schoolhouse is now The East Burke School, a private secondary school. The public grade school has grown with the town and now has more than 2 rooms but still has the same small community feel that you will experience when you visit Burke. (It's still not even close to the size of that school I left!) I am now proud that I was fortunate enough to have gone to a two room schoolhouse. After leaving for a while to work in Boston at MGH, I have returned to Burke and have no intention of leaving again. (Except to visit the ocean with family members who live in more urban settings. That's where we vacation if we're not visiting other mountain towns.) My "little" brother, Gary just left upstate NY finally moving back to Vermont. He remains very connected to the property and community here. My husband Stuart is a native Vermonter. He is a self employed carpenter who is responsible hands on for the latest Wilderness renovation as well as the newest LCD TV. The available books and games were more my idea. He has lived in Montana and Hawaii as well but also chose to come back to Vermont. We live nearby with our dogs, Annie and Donnie. We enjoy everything that the outdoors has to offer and are happy to share it all with you

Why they chose this property

Since the passing of my parents we are pleased to return the house to it's roots by opening it up once again for guests to enjoy! We have retained the original name, Wilderness Lodge, in order to give a nod to bringing history forward.
