Nestled at the end of a secluded driveway beyond the historic Milton Lift Bridge, Riverhouse is a hidden gem perched above the Vermilion River in the heart of South Louisiana. Set on a private one-acre property shaded by majestic live oak and pecan trees, this one-of-a-kind retreat offers a rare combination of history, nature, and modern comfort.
Imagine starting your morning with a cup of coffee on the porch as boats drift by on the river below. Spend the afternoon casting a line from the riverbank, relaxing beneath the shade of centuries-old trees, or simply taking in the peaceful rhythm of life along the water. Whether you’re seeking a quiet escape, a romantic getaway, a family gathering, or a base for exploring Cajun Country, Riverhouse provides an unforgettable setting.
At the heart of the property sits a beautifully restored late-1800s Acadian home rich in history and character. Long before roads and bridges connected the area, the home served as a riverside bar reached primarily by boat. River travelers would stop here to socialize and pass a good time before continuing on to a nearby general store that supplied everyday necessities to the local community. Local lore even suggests the house was moved to its present location by mule team many generations ago.
Today, Riverhouse blends old-world charm with modern conveniences. Inside, you’ll find tall ceilings, original oak floors, spacious living areas, and thoughtful updates throughout. Large windows showcase sweeping views of the Vermilion River from the home’s elevated vantage point, while modern amenities such as fast Wi-Fi and smart-home technology ensure a comfortable stay. The spacious primary bedroom includes a large walk-in closet, and the home’s unique character can be felt in every room.
As a bridgeside property, guests will occasionally hear vehicles crossing the nearby Milton Lift Bridge. Many guests find the bridge to be part of the charm and character of staying along a working river, but a bedside sound machine is provided for light sleepers. The driveway is also steeper than a typical residential driveway due to the home’s elevated riverfront setting. If bridge sounds or a steep driveway may be a concern, Riverhouse may not be the ideal fit for your stay.
Owner’s Recommendation: The home’s large windows feature privacy glass, allowing you to enjoy the stunning river views while maintaining privacy. We recommend opening all blinds and curtains during the day to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the river, bridge, and surrounding landscape.
More than just a place to stay, Riverhouse is an opportunity to experience a piece of Louisiana history while enjoying the beauty, culture, and slower pace of life that make the Vermilion River so special. Today, Riverhouse carries forward the same welcoming spirit it has offered travelers for generations—a place to gather, relax, reconnect, and enjoy life along the water.
Other things to note: We charge an additional $25 per night per pet, with a maximum limit of 2 pets. Please ensure pets are not allowed on the furniture and are kept in a crate if left unattended.
To uphold environmentally responsible practices, we provide filtered water from the refrigerator dispenser instead of bottled water. Additionally, water and ice filters are changed regularly according to a scheduled maintenance plan.
Fire-pit: If firewood is available, we offer 5 logs of complimentary firewood. $10 for 10 logs thereafter. Please send message on VRBO of how many bundles of 10 logs used so we can charge. This fee is used to help offset the cost of restocking firewood for our guests conviencne. Firewood is also available at local gas stations and groceries stores nearby.
Trashcan pickup at the road is on Friday mornings.
For the security of our guest and the safety of our home, we have security cameras outside of the house only and they do not record audio.

Matt Sycamore, Illinois Rating, 5 stars May 2024 Stayed with a pet We loved it here! We're from Chicago but have some familiarity with the area and this was a great place to stay! It had the coziness of Louisiana as well as being close enough to the main Lafayette area. Mike was fantastic in accommodating our graduation party and his responsiveness was greatly appreciated. We'll stay here again in the future!
Kay Springhill, Louisiana Rating, 5 stars May 2024 Stayed with a pet Mike gives very good instructions on how to find the place and the driveway. He was very responsive if we needed anything however it was all set up so nice and already prepared for anything you needed! The atmosphere was awesome because you were kinda away from neighbors but had neighbors. It was very peaceful. I loved the house because it was that farm feeling with even a rooster next door to say hello but far enough away it was funny to me! The location was convenient to any direction we wanted to go! I will most definitely look him up again if we have more baseball games over there! We absolutely loved it ! Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Was a great spot for us we liked having the river in front and the bridge near by as it was best to watch and see. Will stay again if available next year.
The house was very clean and ready for our arrival. The property is relatively isolated so you have space to play. Our son was fishing as soon as he got out of the car.
Everything was great. Clean, full kitchen and access to all streaming services. The vehicles crossing the bridge was alerting but became calming after a few hours.
The house was very clean, comfortable, and we loved being on the water, sitting out by the fire at night. It had the perfect amount of solitude, while not being too far away from plenty of things to see and do. We loved it and would love to come back!
Very nice historic home on the river. Very clean and well maintained. Only small complaint is the driveway turning off of the main road is pretty steep and has a blind spot when leaving.
We had a fantastic time being together. We sat outside & enjoyed the beautiful scenery, while we ate & spent time together as a family. It was awesome.

What makes this property unique
Being an historic home the front porch faces the Vermilion river since the river was once the main transportation in the area. The property is elevated making the river views from the porch or windows, one of a kind. Owners recommendation: Large windows have privacy glass so it’s recomended to lift up all blinds and curtains to fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings.
