We had a great stay. The beach house was perfect for our family The upstairs is perfect if you have teenagers in your group !! We enjoyed both decks Beautiful sunrise and sunsets We would definitely come again !!!
We had a great stay here! I wish I had known that the little bridge in the yard was not a path to the beach, but the walk to the next drive with beach access wasn't too bad. A wagon is handy! I would come back in a heartbeat. It was a very quiet, relaxing place to stay.
This is the 4th time we've stayed at Northwind. The cottage feels secluded and the views from the upper deck are beautiful. It's a short walk to the beach. There is a lot to do there and the cottage is located a convenient distance from plenty of activities. We look forward to coming back.
Nice, more traditional beach house. Just off the bridge in Rodanthe. From the top balcony, you can see both the ocean and the sound, and there is an almost unobstructed view to the ocean from the back. Good value, and from this location in Rodanthe, you can easily visit Bodie's Island and further south down Hatteras Island. We enjoyed it, and would stay here again!
This is the third time we've stayed at this cottage. We love getting away and staying somewhere that feels like home. There's enough space for the 6 of us to get together or find places to be alone. The kitchen is setup for several chefs to prepare meals. The laundry room is conveniently on the way out/in the door. We hope to stay here again in the future.
We LOVED this home! It was just a beautiful setting. Comfortable and so many spots to enjoy the views. The outdoor shower was the ultimate luxury. Appreciated the really nice laundry appliances and the Dyson to keep up with the sand. Rob was great to work with. So thankful to come across this property. We hope to be fortunate to come back to this property year after year.
Beautiful home but only had one comfortable bed washer didn’t work and mosquitoes were really bad. Daughter had over 50 bites on her. Impossible to play cornhole liked we wanted in the evening because the amount of mosquitoes. Best part were the beaches. It was a holiday week and not many people on the beach which we really enjoyed.
This beach house was ideally situated - a five-minute walk to the waves but far back enough to have a buffer. It is set back from the road with trees and bushes screening the noise and traffic. Rodanthe is a quiet part of the Outer Banks, which suited us.
The house itself was impeccably cleaned before our arrival and everything was functional. The layout is great, with a wonderful sunrise-over-the-ocean view from the loft, and a common space comprising the kitchen, dining room, living room, and loft. There is a mudroom/laundy room on the lower level, which is highly useful in a beach house.
Communication with the owner was good - we knew everything we needed to know.

Thanks William! We are really glad that you chose our home for your vacation.

Our family had a wonderful time at this location. It is wonderful for a lowkey relaxing beach vacation. The house was clean, had plenty of room to spread out, the kitchen was roomy and well stocked with items to make cooking easy, had an outside shower and more than enough yard to spend time playing outdoor games. It is an easy walk to the beach and even with us being there over 4th of July week we found it to have room to “set up camp” for the day and not feel crowded. The mornings spent watching the sunrise over the ocean, enjoying our coffee, was so relaxing. There are a few places near this location that we enjoyed: Beans and Beads for wonderful coffee and pastries, Lisa’s Pizza for great pizza and the General Store had items we needed and forgot. A few items to pack along with your bedding and towels are dish towels, dish cloths, trash bags and a few ziplock bags (if cooking at the house). Rob was very prompt at answering any questions. We will recommend this house to others and will stay here again if we are back in the area.
This was our first time staying at Northwind, and it was a very nice place. This was our sixth trip to OBX and the first time we stayed south of Nags Head. Rodanthe was a quiet and amazingly low-traffic place—nothing like Nags Head or Kitty Hawk.
The cottage was clean and ready upon arrival, and there were no issues with our stay. The multi-level decks were nice for taking advantage of the breeze in the morning and later in the evening, as it was in the high 80s every day we stayed. The AC worked great!
Unfortunately, the water in the creek/marshland was high, so the bridge and direct path to the dunes were unusable, but the little path north to the road to the dunes was easily accessible, though some branches needed trimming.
The beach was clean, and there were no crowds—again, something we were not familiar with. Kite surfers frequented this area because the waves were large, which made swimming impossible for the latter portion of our stay.
Overall, it was a great stay, and I would stay again.

Road was flooded and very muddy
We did not have power for over 24 hours. . Tried to call Rob and after waking up to no power. We had to call HomeAway and then got a hold of owner. They said they were not getting my texts? We had to throw out a bunch of food because of the power outage. The power company said this was the third time. The house sits on marsh land and you can not access the beach from the path in the pictures unless you want to wade in a swamp.

Mother nature blesses the outer banks with spectacular beauty and unfortunately at times intense weather. Northwind cottage has now completely recovered from a lightning strike and the rains. Updated exterior and decks ready for 2018! Much appreciation to Ewell Custom Carpentry! Please check out the recently updated pictures.
The house is a little off the beaten path, well off the highway but not that close to the beach. Yes, there is a small mobile home park right across the fence, but it was quiet and -- with the exception of a couple trailers -- well kept. Our only issue was a bird or pair of birds were coming in through a fan vent in the side of the house and had built a nest in the ductwork that is not easily accessible. The owner-manager couldn't find a pest control licensed for birds that could get to us during the week. The birds were noisy early in the morning, but those sleeping nearest the area adapted by putting on music and earbuds. Not a deal-breaker, but something to ask about maybe. For us, it's just one of those "vacation experience" stories.

Thanks Randy! I'm sorry for the disruption and I really appreciate that you were understanding. The birds were a new experience for us as well. We discovered that none of our existing maintenance contracts addressed birds which left us searching for a resolution and at the mercy of their scheduling. The beach is about a thousand feet or a five minute walk from the home.

Disappointing vacay
The home was unclean. Mattress covers soiled, refrigerator dirty, floors and tubs consisted of sand, ice maker frozen and ice dispenser never worked. Microwave had dried splattered food. When my family checked in after a 5.5 hr drive we had to clean the home before unpacking. Downstairs tub did not drain, finally fixed on day 3 of our trip. Lawn with knee high grass. Finally was mowed 6th day of vacay. Our first trip ever to the OBX and it was such a disappointment. Owner was notified and bathtub drain was fixed. Nothing else offered in helping with the uncleanliness of the home. Just that the
“ home was expected to be properly prepared for your stay.” Hopefully this experience will help future guest and owner in checking on how home is being prepared for renters.
Pros:
-close to beach- the little path shown in pictures is not how you get to the beach. You walk through A clearing in the bushes and then you get to the paved access road. It’s about a five minute walk.
- The beach was not crowded in that area at all. And lifeguards were close by because of the campground next-door.
- fairly quiet and secluded. There is another cottage right next-door, but no one was there during our stay. There’s a mobile home community right next to the house, but overall it was quiet.
- spacious inside, comfortably fit our family of five
Cons
- The house was not very clean when we arrived. I had to sweep as soon as we got there and picked up a lot of sand. The rugs in the bathrooms did not seem clean. I had to scrub the tub before putting my toddler in it.
- nothing is provided. No linens, towels, dish, towels, paper products, hand soap, and there was only one, half-filled bottle of Lysol spray. So you will have to bring everything with you.
- the downstairs queen was uncomfortable but the upstairs queen was ok.

Well-cared for quiet property, lots of privacy, great sunrise and sunset views. Conveniently central
House is located a little back from the ocean side beach but this allows privacy as there are no other multi-story buildings nearby (a rare thing indeed). House is updated and has all the features you need. As owner states, there are no linens or towels included. You should assume this to also include TP and paper towels. There is a well-stocked quikey-mart/gas stations just across the street with anything you forgot. Bedrooms, living areas, TVs, appliances, and furniture are all clean and modern. Multiple decks with a screened-in room. B-ball hoop and well-maintained grassy area for kids. Covered parking for 1 car. "Mudroom" with laundry for beach clothes, outdoor shower. There are a few mobile homes on the other side of the fence but they were not a problem and there was no noise, other than waves, frogs, and a mockingbird. Great central Hatteras Island location. 45 mins to Hatteras Ferry to Ocracoke, 25 minutes to Food Lion in Avon, 35 minutes to Wright Bros. Loved that it was quiet and much less traffic than Northern OBX but I'm sure the one-lane road is a problem in high season. My parents, brother, and husband and I loved the house and had a great vacation. Keep an eye out for the small driveway marked by a curved PVC pipe labeled "Northwinds" just before the Pirate Stuff store.
We stayed for a week and absolutely loved it. The upstairs balcony gives you an amazing view of the sunrise and the screened porch is perfect for enjoying dinner and listening to the ocean. Beach access is fairly convenient but we mostly just drove a few minutes north to a beach with life guards. It's a bit of a drive to a large grocery store but there are smaller stores nearby and plenty of great places to eat, coffee shops etc. If you're adventurous there's kite surfing and parasailing just a few minutes south and when you feel like staying in there is a yard large enough for badminton or kicking a ball around. Really a fantastic place to stay.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Northwind cottage. It's location couldn't have been better for our family. The beach was within walking distance and never crowded. The campground across the road was always quiet and they never disturbed us. I loved the new patio furniture and spent many mornings and evenings on those decks with coffee and a book. The teenagers enjoyed the basketball court. Would definitely stay again! Thanks for sharing your cottage with us!
Property was as described, clean and very accessible to the things we wanted to do. Not to far away from the light houses and other parks to visit. Rob does an amazing job with communication and is always very responsive if needed! 2nd time we have stayed here and I’m sure it will not be our last!!! Thanks again for another nice vacation in the Outer Banks!

This home is absolutely adorable in a very quiet area close to restaurants and stores Has everything you need for a small group There was 6 of us and we had plenty of room Sunrise deck was wonderful, screened in porch was so comfortable to have a snack and glass of wine
I’d definitely return to this home again Rob the owner replied right back when booking as well as info to get into home I did not need anything so I did not have to reach out during my stay Everything was Great
