125 years after its construction and initial use as an olive mill, "1891" Home was fully renovated. Magnificent views at the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean sky makes it the holiday house everyone dreams of.
“1891"- Home, is a two storey villa, situated in Apokoronas- one of the seven Municipalities of the Prefecture of Chania and one of the most picturesque. Apokoronas covers a diverse area that reaches from the foothills of
the White mountains to the sandy beaches and rocky shores on the
northwest side of Crete.
Within its boundaries you will discover the beauty of olive, citrus
groves and vineyards, local flora and fauna along with stunning views
of the Mediterranean Sea. Due to its locale and the area's vibrant
settlements, Apokoronas still offers pockets of traditional Cretan
hospitality and customs as well as architecture.
The area is known for its hiking/ foot trails, gorges and some of the
most popular sandy beaches famous for sailing, water sports or just
relaxing by the waterfront.

The 1891 Home was even more beautiful than the pictures portray, and Kefalas was a perfect location to visit both Chania and Rethymno. The homemade treats and kitchen supplies were a welcome touch as we arrived late on our first bight. Alexandra was very welcoming and responsive. We would love to visit again.

We had a wonderful stay in Alexandra’s house. Stunning views and a beautifully designed house - somehow even more beautiful than the pictures. We had everything we needed for our stay; the house is very well equipped, very clean, and we had a very warm welcome. Alexandra very generously left wine, groceries and some delicious pastries - a very special touch. We would love to stay here again!

Wonderful house with a wonderful host in a great location

Alexandra the host made us so welcome, she even stocked the fridge with groceries, fantastic. The house is charming, extremely comfortable and every last detail has been thought of. The pool and back garden have a great view over the sea of Crete. Both local tavernas (both excellent) have grocery stores and are a pleasant 6 minute walk from the house. If you don’t know this area of Crete it’s still sleepy and totally unspoiled but really central for getting everywhere. If I could give the house 20 out of 10, I would, we loved our time staying here. Thank you

Beautiful vacation home

We can’t say enough good things about our experience with Alexandra and this beautiful home on Crete. We were looking to find a less touristy location to spend 4 days to enjoy local atmosphere. Magical stay in Crete

After a late arrival it was wonderful to arrive to such a warm welcome at 1891 home. The villa has such a beautiful setting but it's so much more than an amazing view with a wonderful pool, although those were amazing! Alexandra had really thoughtfully stocked the villa with everything you might need for a comfortable stay and the village setting is a real taste of authentic Crete with two amazing tavernas within easy walk. As our son repeatedly said, "best holiday ever!"

Beautiful home

The house is beautiful and charming. Very clean with an amazing pool and views. We spent one week at a resort, and then loved having this home as an escape the second week. It is in a small remote village, but the drive to areas with more stores and shops is only 15 minutes away. It was a fun way to end our time in Crete

Lovely house in a quite and rural neighborhood

We had a wonderful time in Kefalas; very much enjoyed the beautiful house & site, everything was prepared perfectly, Alexandra was an exceptionally kind and helpful host. Spectacular Views!

Alexandra was a delightful hostess, who also well explained the colorful family history of the property. The property is very well kept and the yard is stunning, very well designed (I suspect by Alexandra). We were left a nice supply of basic staples, as well as lovely Cretan red wine and Raki. She helped make sure that we were able to find our route to the property and was there to greet us. It is a small village and the people were friendly.

Perfect Holiday

Sometimes I don’t want to put good reviews because then it will get booked up when I want to come back :) If you read the description and it’s what your after then look no further. Everything was exactly as we wanted for our holiday, we like a bit of privacy and having a place to ourselves when we want to relax. Local tavernas not far away by car and shops with the essentials a 5 minute stroll away. Alexandra was on hand for any questions or advice for things to do and we can’t wait to return.

Authentic Renovated Greek Home

From the moment we got there and were welcomed by Alexandra, we felt right at home. Alexandra warmly greeted us with the history of her family home and gave us a tour. The house was perfect in every way and immaculate! It had old world charm with all the modern conveniences including the infinity pool with an amazing view. The welcome treats included her Mom's homemade cookies which were delicious. Although the house is in a remote location, you can walk to the local stores and restaurants for a delicious meal. There are multiple beaches nearby within a short drive. It was the perfect get-away! Thank you to Alexandra for a wonderful stay in your family home :)

Wonderful villa in a great location

Just back and wishing we were still there. 1891 Home is a lovely spacious villa with an infinity pool and amazing views out to sea. Quite a remote location which we liked, but only five minutes walk to a couple of small supermarkets, tavernas and a bar. We arrived late at night but the key was in a secure location for us to gain access and Alexandra had left enough essentials and treats to keep us going for the first few days which was a lovely gesture. Everything you will need is there. You will need a hire car though, we had one delivered to the villa on the first day from Auto Club in Chania, dropped it off at Heraklion airport - would also recommend. Would highly recommend this beautiful find.

Wonderful spring holiday

We enjoyed close to 3 weeks at 1891 Home, in Kefalas, Crete. It really did feel like our home away from home. Alexandra greeted us at the door, even as we arrived later than expected. She explained some of the history of the Home, and its importance to her, her family and the community. I have some dietary needs, and she went out of her way to make sure we had some gluten free food in the house until we could purchase our own. Alexandra made sure that we were able to contact her if needed, anytime of day. The house is immaculate, well stocked and very comfortable. The views of the Mediterranean Sea are spectacular, morning, noon and night. We found the place to be exactly as advertised, and would highly recommend it to others.

A fabulous holiday home, absolutely wonderful

1891 is a truly beautiful holiday home. Alexandra, the owner, has succeeded in preserving and celebrating the history of the property as an olive mill whilst making it a modern and comfortable home with a great kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms. Her attention to detail is evident throughout. The mattresses in the bedrooms are extremely comfortable and the A/C works really well. The family and local history that are so closely woven through the property make it really special. The views through the picture window and from the fabulous infinity pool really are to die for. The pool is a good size and having an integrated toddler pool area was yet another clever touch. The welcome pack goes beyond what you might expect - generous and thoughtful. I can't recommend this holiday home highly enough. It is fantastic. The owner is truly welcoming and goes the extra mile to make sure you have a great stay.

Beautiful property. Perfect location.

Kefalas is an authentic Greek hilltop town well located for a great holiday. It's a 2 hour drive from Heraklion Airport and less than half that from Chania. The town has great views inland to the White Mountains and out to sea over the Mediterranean. It has a couple of fabulous and inexpensive tavernas and a couple of small supermarkets - all walkable and all with the wonderful Cretan charm and welcome. 1891 Home is spotlessly clean, beautifully designed, very well equipped and well positioned. It is a special place for sure. Alexandra was very responsive throughout the booking process, greeted us on arrival and provided some great ideas and information on things to do. She also provided a generous and thoughtful welcome pack of beer, wine, cheese, milk, Cretan specialities and more. Really lovely. In fact the whole experience across the whole week was lovely. We can't wait to go back.

Little Paradise over the hill

We loved our trip to Crete and did not have enough time to see it all. We will definitely return. Part of the experience was Alexandra`s little Paradise over the hill with a magnificent view of the ocean and surrounding mountains. That, the pool and lovely breeze was enough to convince ourselves to chill and stay at the house a few days instead of exploring the island. Alexandra was courteous and quite helpful. We walked into a well equipped lovely house that already had food and beverages. It is spacious and very comfortable. We had friends staying in Chania and we were initially concerned that Kefalas may too far from the action but never regretted our choice. The surrounding area is very nice. There is a good restaurant at the village and a food market that is operated by a lovely lady that sells local produce . There are several nice beaches from 15 to 45 min away. Balos beach and Samaria`s gorge should be on top of your list of things to experience. Thanks you Alexandra for your help and little paradise over the hill.

1891 Home - A Cretan Dream!

We wanted our week-long stay at 1891 Home to last forever! The pictures are spectacular and yet even more breathtaking in person! It is a stunning and spacious Cretan home, very comfortable for our family of four, impeccably decorated, and loaded with charm and character with all the modern amenities. We feel lucky to have experienced such beauty. Alexandra is a wonderful, warm, and considerate host, who greeted us upon arrival and was very responsive throughout the entire booking process. She welcomed us with traditional homemade food from her mother, as well as wine, olive oil, a basket of fresh tomatoes, as well as other delicious and luscious local food, and a fridge stocked with the essentials. She provided tons of information about the house and the area which was very helpful. The walls are lined with photos of her ancestors who owned the olive mill that was beautifully converted into the home. The pool was the icing on the cake, with magical views, and provided us with hours of relaxation and fun. Kefalas itself is off the beaten path yet perfectly located, with a brief walk to the local supermarket and taverna and easy drives to tons of beautiful beaches and places to explore, and is even a doable drive to Elafonisi beach. 1891 Home will always hold a special place in our hearts and was the highlight of our time in Crete. It made our family vacation incredibly special with memories to last a lifetime. We look forward to a return visit! Efcharisto Alexandra!

Fantastic Beautiful house in a marvelous area

We loved everything about this house. It was spacious and beautiful and very comfortable with a tremendous amount of character as it is the beloved family retreat of the host Alexandra and we are lucky to share it with her! She was a wonderful, warm and considerate host, who provided us with luscious local foods, including the best yoghurt ever, and tons of information about the house and the area. The walls are lined with photos of her ancestors who owned the olive mill that was beautifully converted into a living space. The pool was fantastic, so lightly chlorinated that you didn't feel it at all, and we were in and out of it a number of times a day. Although there are neighbors on both sides and the village around it, the house has been designed so well that it feels quite secluded. The village itself is one of the most beautiful villages that we found on Crete, and was delightful to walk around and explore. It is also a perfect location, with easy drives to tons of beautiful places to explore, and is even a very doable drive all the way to Elaphonisi beach if you want to see different landscape. There are a lot of Brits who have bought houses in the area, so one of the local tavernas, Maddy's, run by a lovely Roumanian woman who is married to a Cretan man, serves food at all hours, which is useful when you want an earlier dinner than the usual taverna hours. it also serves more vegetables than usual, and it is fun to witness the expat community hanging out with each other. Kefalas is not much touristed other than the expats who live there, so it has a lovely feel to it and we have found ourselves missing it very much as we moved on to other parts of the island. We could happily have stayed there much longer than the one week we had, and we recommend it highly! it would be very comfortable for a family of four, but was just marvelous for a couple.

Everything is in the title!... Well, no. I could add some more superlatives and talk a bit about the beautiful pool (water was a bit cold but that was due to the winter season slowly ending...), the nice attentions like a great welcome pack (bottle of wine, local cookies, fruits, vegetables, coffee, milk, olive oil (home made!) and... local Raki (also home made!). Delicious... Hm, that would not be enough. I should mention that the house has been fully cleaned up in the middle of our stay (we stayed 7 days), towels and sheets were changed, additional towels were at our disposal, the kitchen was freshly renovated and fully functional, the AC was working very fine. OK, that 's enought for the material things: 5 stars. But still something is missing in my review. Ah yes, the emotional part! We spend 7 days in a very athentically renovated house, in a small village where the atmosphere was so peacefull, time was suddently running much slowlier than in big cities. What a wonderfull regenerating week! And probably the most important: the people. Starting with the neighbours, the village restaurant owner, the local bio supermarket, the people we met in general everywhere on the island... But my review would not be complete and by far if I was not talking about the owners of the 1891 House, Alexandra and her husband. Two beautiful persons. To the first and second degree. It was our pleasure to meet you. Thanks a lot for the great experience you offered us. I'd love to be Greek in a second life ;-) ! To those who are spending hours and hours comparing houses and locations. Stop now and book this one. You'll not regret it ;-)

Traditionelle Urlaubsvilla mit einem Hauch Luxus

Wir haben die Villa 1891 zu viert (zwei Paare 30Jahre alt) für 12 Tage gebucht. Das Haus ist wunderschön und besticht mit seinem traditionellem Charme. Dabei fehlt es aber an nichts um den Urlaub so angenehm wie möglich zu gestalten. Angefangen bei dem modernen Infinity Pool mit atemberaubender Aussicht aufs Meer, über Klimaanlagen in jedem Raum, einer vollsusgestatteten Küche und Holzkohle Grill auf der Terrasse. Die Villa liegt in einem ruhigen Ort mit 2 Tavernen und 2 kleinen Supermärkten. Alle Leute vor Ort waren super gastfreundlich und zuvorkommend! Das hat uns sehr beeindruckt. In 20 Minuten ist man mit dem Auto in der nächsten größeren Stadt mit einem wunderbaren langen Sandstrand und vielen Strandbars, Restsurants und Geschäften. Auch das ganze organisatorische hat super funktioniert. Wir konnten uns bei Fragen immer an Alexandra wenden und sie hat uns immer sehr nett und hilfsbereit geholfen. Das Haus würde ich jedem Empfehlen der nach Ebtspannung und Sonne abgelegen von Touristen Hotspots sucht. Gerne wieder!

Aufenthalt im April 2023

Wir sind trotz unserer späten Ankunft sehr herzlich von Alexandra empfangen worden. Den Kühlschrank haben wir gefüllt vorgefunden. Das Haus ist phantastisch! Der Blick über das Meer ist unbeschreiblich. Das Haus ist in Wirklichkeit noch schöner als auf den Bildern. Die Lage von dem Haus ist ebenfalls empfehlenswert. Es sind zwei kleine Supermärkte fußläufig erreichbar. Mehrere Tavernen sind ebenfalls in Kefalas vorhanden. Kleine Wanderungen sind vom Haus aus möglich. Ein Auto ist jedoch notwendig.

Wunderbar

Gastgeberin Alexandra hat uns wunderbar mit kleinen Leckereien und einem gefüllten Kühlschrank empfangen. Das lies uns gleich mal freudig mit den Aufmerksamkeiten auf die Terrasse sitzen und den phänomenalen Ausblick genießen. Besser konnte es nicht anfangen. Die kleinen Details bei dieser schönen Empfangsgeste sind schon bemerkenswert. So ist dann letztlich auch das Haus, sein Interieur und die zu entdeckenden liebevoll und kunstverständig ausgesuchten Kleinigkeiten bemerkenswert. Dann dieser Pool und der Ausblick auf das Meer, am liebsten würden wir gleich noch einmal anreisen ... Einfach super und empfehlenswert. Wir könnten jetzt noch ein paar Dinge mehr aufzählen, letztlich bleibt uns aber noch einmal hervorzuheben, dass Alexandra eine sehr aufmerksame und hilfsbereite Gastgeberin ist, was wir sehr zu schätzen wussten.

Accueil et maison exceptionnels

L'accueil d'Alexia à été exceptionnel. Des Petits encas nous attendaient à notre arrivée, parfait pour le 1er soir. Alexia nous a communiqué beaucoup d'informations sur les tavernes à faire, les lieux incontournables.. Merci à elle d'avoir parlé un peu Français, notre Anglais n'étant pas très précis.. La propriété d'Alexia est située dans un village où vous trouverez petite épicerie et 2 tavernes. Nous n'en avons fait qu'une mais on y a bien mangé. Kefalas est situé à 45 min de chania (la canée) et à presque 2 heures des plus belles plages, ballons, elafonissi, à 1h30 de Héraklion. La maison est très propre et dispose de tout le confort nécessaire et d'une excellente literie. La vue de cette maison est splendide, magnifique levé de soleil. La piscine et le jardin sont très beaux. Nous vous recommandons vivement de vous arrêter chez Alexia, vous ne serez pas déçus ni par l'accueil, ni par cette maison de caractère.
