About the host
Your host
We are a Canadian/ South African professional couple who take every opportunity that we can get to leave out busy work-life behind and escape to the South African bush. We have traveled throughout Southern Africa and beyond, but instantly felt at home in Hoedspruit.
Why they chose this property
Do you feel the call of the African bush?
We certainly do. Though we have traveled throughout the world, nowhere draws us in like rural South Africa, so much so that we built our second home there in 2016. The friendly people, the food and wine, the wildlife and nature unlike anywhere else on earth; South Africa has everything that we love, in abundance. Ed is originally from South Africa and Annette has traveled and worked throughout the continent. Together we have explored every corner of South Africa. We were drawn to Hoedspruit and the Zandspruit Estate in particular, because it allowed us to experience South African bush living, while still having the conveniences of nearby shops and restaurants. Ed is also an amateur pilot and relished the opportunity to be able to fly in Africa. Annette loved the fact that the wildlife on Zandspruit still allowed for walking, jogging and cycling on the Estate.
We chose this building site for its mature trees and great mountain views. We just love sitting on the deck with a cup of tea, or glass of wine, listening to the many birds or watching for wildlife roaming by, while staring at the nearby mountains. When we are not in Hoedspruit, we rent our home out to others, so that they too can have the experience of life in the African bush.

What makes this property unique
Designing and building this house ourselves has allowed us to get everything just the way we wanted it. From the expansive indoor and outdoor living areas with amazing views of the mountains, to the outdoor showers that really allow you to get close to nature, Nkanyi House is our piece of tranquility in the African bush.
We love the attention to detail in the decorating, like the headboard built from an old Indian door, to the amazing dining room light fixture that Ed spent half a year creating.
We also love to cook and created a kitchen that cooks will love. No more dull, cheap knives or minimal supplies. Ours is a kitchen that you can easily put out a fabulous meal. Explore African recipes with our specially chosen selection of cookbooks.
Being South African, Ed had to have a great braai (BBQ). The outdoor cooking area includes a sink and large built-in braai, making it a great place to grill for any group.
Environmental sustainability is important to us. So was having consistent power. We therefore chose to invest in a high-grade solar system that allows the house to be almost entirely powered by the sun, with the option of switching to the grid on extended cloudy days. This makes Nkanyi House unique in the region.
We are sure that you will love spending time at Nkanyi House just as much as we do!
