The space
This meticulously renovated cave house in the heart of world famous Oia has all one can wish for: Stunning, expansive views inside and out; bright, airy rooms; modern amenities blended with the preserved details of the historical cave house; traditional Cycladic furnishings and tastefully selected antiques and art. The result is an atmosphere of warmth, charm and island comfort.

The house features two exterior entrances from a large terrace. Three bedrooms, two baths, and two lounge/living areas provide ample space for a vacationing family to spread out in two “suites”. All of the bedrooms are elegantly outfitted with warm antiques and comfortable furnishings. The modern kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need to feel right at home: New traditional style cabinetry, modern appliances and a show-stopping volcano view. The baths are modern and naturally beautiful, with hand-formed plaster walls and generous walk-in showers.

The central combined living and dining room is bright and airy, with a traditional wooden sofa and carved wood dining table. The first bedroom and one of the two bathrooms, is accessed from the living room.

A vaulted archway leads from the living room to the second “suite” of rooms: a fully furnished lounge, with two connected bedrooms. One charming bedroom with two built-in single beds is connected to the lounge. Further in, a second large bedroom has a built-in double bed romantically nestled beneath arched niches and a vaulted ceiling.

The two terraces are a marvel unto themselves: the lower level terrace wraps the house in two directions and no surrounding buildings impede the light and air around (an almost unheard of condition in Santorini) offering views of boundless variety: sea, sky, volcanoes and cliff-side villages.

The views from the upper terrace are truly infinite-a special vantage point for taking in the brilliant, ever-changing colors of sunset until the twinkling lights of Oia emerge with the stars above. A large plunge tub installed here provides rejuvenation for the mind, body and soul: sitting at the island’s highest point, soaking in the sights of Oia day or night, living for each moment in the magic of Santorini.

Other things to note
Skala Cave is the result of the careful renovation of a very important historical Santorini house style, commonly called “cave houses”. These houses are completely unique to the island. Many examples have been preserved and renovated in Oia.

Most early residents of Santorini worked in sea trading and exports. In order to be close to their occupation and also to perceive potentially unfriendly ship invasions, they chose to live on the edge of the caldera cliffs. Wealthy ship captains built mansions that can still be seen in Oia today. Ship hands and sailors built “hyposkafa” or “cave houses”, which were carved into the soft pumice stone of the cliff-sides.

These cave houses were easier to build, and protected the occupants from the harsh winter winds and weather. The natural insulation of the earthen walls of the space also regulated the interior temperature year-round, keeping them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Today, this natural insulation continues to produce an advantage for the villa, maintaining a constantly cool interior environment, even on the hottest summer days.

The renovation of Skala Cave preserved the original organic shapes of the smooth walls and vaulted ceilings that were part of the original house. The creative use of the original features is evident throughout the house.
