The Space:
GROUNDS & WATERFRONT
Welcome to Rosegill, a historic 700-acre riverfront estate at the mouth of Urbanna Creek on Virginia’s Rappahannock River. Surrounded by active farmland, private shoreline, wooded trails, and two stocked lakes, Rosegill offers a rare opportunity to slow down and reconnect with family, friends, and nature.
As you drive down the long country lane, you may spot deer, foxes, rabbits, and soaring osprey before the estate comes into view. The property’s sweeping river frontage, expansive lawns, and peaceful setting immediately set the tone for an unforgettable stay.
Spend your days walking the beach, fishing for bass in the lakes, crabbing from the dock, paddling the creek in our kayaks and canoes, lounging by the private pool, or exploring the grounds by foot or golf cart. Strong paddlers can venture onto the Rappahannock River, while boaters may tie up at the renovated boathouse (5’ draft maximum with prior approval).
We can also help arrange memorable local experiences including:
Sunset cruises and fishing charters
Private chef dinners
Guided nature walks
Boat rentals and local excursions
Evenings are best spent gathered around the firepit under the stars, sharing stories after a full day outdoors.
THE MAIN HOUSE
Steeped in 18th-century charm, the lovingly restored Main House combines historic character with modern comfort. Original architectural details, grand hallways, antique furnishings, and sweeping river views create a setting unlike a typical vacation rental.
The home sleeps 12 guests across 5 elegant bedrooms with 9 beds, high-end linens, and timeless furnishings. Multiple gathering spaces make it ideal for multi-generational groups.
Highlights include:
Riverfront porch with panoramic views
Gourmet kitchen with Wolf range, warming drawer, and All-Clad cookware
Formal dining room seating 12
Cozy wood-paneled den and spacious living room
Window benches, chess table, and reading nooks throughout
Private pool overlooking the grounds
From morning coffee on the porch to late-night conversations by the fire, Rosegill was designed for lingering and connection.
WATERFRONT & OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
Guests enjoy access to:
Private beach
Dock and boathouse
Two private lakes
Kayaks and canoes
Fishing and crabbing
Walking trails and open grounds
Seasonal private pool (May 15–September 15)
Watch eagles and osprey soar overhead, paddle into charming Urbanna Creek, or simply settle into a chair with a good book and river views.
EXPLORE URBANNA
Just across the creek lies the historic waterfront town of Urbanna, one of Virginia’s oldest and most charming small towns. Browse local shops, enjoy fresh seafood, explore museums, or visit the marina by kayak or boat.
Rosegill is also within an hour of Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown, making it an excellent base for exploring Virginia history.
THE HISTORY OF ROSEGILL
Rosegill is one of Virginia’s oldest and most historically significant estates, with origins dating back to 1649. The property is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.
Over centuries, the estate evolved into the remarkable riverfront home that stands today, blending colonial history with the relaxed beauty of Virginia’s Tidewater region.
GOOD TO KNOW
The property is a working agricultural farm, so you may occasionally see farm equipment or hear seasonal farming activity.
The fireplaces are decorative only and may not be used.
The pool is unheated and open seasonally from May 15–September 15.
The pool cleaners come every Thursday. In addition, our handyman Riki walks over each morning to check the pool, clean the filter basket, and skim if needed.
We also have someone who stops by to water the plants as needed.
The property includes waterfront areas, docks, and water equipment that require caution and active supervision of children.
Two smaller homes on the property are privately occupied. Your caretakers, Megan and Riki, live nearby and are available if needed during your stay.
STAY WITH US
Guests often tell us Rosegill is the rare place where kids forget about their phones and families genuinely reconnect. Whether you are celebrating a milestone, gathering multiple generations, or simply escaping city life for a few days, Rosegill offers space to slow down, explore, and create lasting memories together.
Guest Access:
Guests have access to the Main House, pool, beach, dock, lakes, trails. and grounds. There are two other smaller houses on the property that are private. The caretakers Megan and Riki reside in the house to East (right side when facing house), and a single woman resides in the house to the left. Megan and Riki are available to help guests during their stay. Neither occupants will use the pool, lakes, or beach while guests are in residence.
Getting Around:
A car is necessary. You may also want to rent a golf cart for exploring the expansive property. More information available upon booking.
Interaction with Guests:
We are available to help make your visit to Rosegill special. Our caretakers Megan and Riki are just a phone call away and live next door. We thoroughly enjoyed the house, decorations, property, views, and history! My children were sorry to leave! Thanks for sharing this historic property with us.
We had an amazing time! Our group was 10 adults and 3 babies. The kitchen was perfect to make big meals and we loved spending time out at the pool. The lawn was amazing for yard games. Couldn’t say enough good things.
We stayed at Rosegill in 2023 for Thanksgiving and loved it so much, we went back again this year. The property just has a wonderful feel to it. It's well cared for and the owners and caretakers do an excellent job taking care of their guests as well.

We're thrilled when guests love their stay so much, they come back the next year! Once again, Stephanie and her family were a joy to host and we hope they'll make a third booking in the future.
The property is loaded with things to do and places to see. We can't wait to go back. Location was perfect for our older family and kids.

Andy and Lara - thank you for your kind review! I’m glad your boat fit well at our dock and everyone including the small ones had success fishing. We would love to have you return next summer. We will let you know when we open bookings for 2023. Strother Scott
All members of the family loved this house. There was something for everyone. We all love to be outside. There was swimming, hiking, fishing, bicycling, and kayaking. We also toured Williamsburg and Jamestown, so there is so much to do. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable. We only wish that we had planned on more days to stay.
What a beautiful historic property! The location is perfect and the house was wonderful. We would recommend to anyone wanting a quiet relaxing vacation!

We spent the week at Rosegill with 3 generations and it was one of the most unique, memorable properties we have ever stayed at. We loved the little town of Urbanna and learned so much history around the area. Thank you for the memories!

Really grand and lovely home that is great for a large family gathering
Wonderful spaces. Modern, yet vintage. It’s a great place to rest, play games, take walks and enjoy the water. I highly recommend the property as a place for a family to meet.

We got married in nearby Wake, VA and Rosegill was the perfect location for out of town family to come and stay for the weekend. It was gorgeous and I wish I could have stayed longer and enjoyed the space more.

We're happy to have been a part of your special weekend! Thank you for choosing Rosegill and for being great guests.
Beautiful, spacious property. Plenty of space for our multi generational family to spread out. Beautiful grounds. The family especially enjoyed the pool. Excellent communications and support from property manager
We stayed at Rosegill with extended family for Thanksgiving, it was more perfect than we could have imagined. Beautiful house with a great cozy feel, even though a large house. Grounds are amazing and they were so good about helping us with anything and everything. Highly recommend a stop by Urbanna Trading while there - great wine and gourmet goods.

I somehow overlooked responding to Stephanie's review.
Stephanie and her family were a joy to host and we're so happy that they enjoyed Thanksgiving at Rosegill! I'm pretty sure her husband would fish the upper lake 24/7 if he could! We love when our guests really enjoy the grounds, beach & lakes.
We look forward to hosting Stephanie again.

Thank for your kind review and for being such conscientious guests. We are so pleased to share this beautiful place with you and we look forward to another visit soon!
From the house and pool, to the beach and lakes, to the dock and the swing out front; everything we needed to both relax and be entertained was within our reach.
The owners were extremely helpful and communication was excellent from the start. They provided contacts and information for restaurants, boat charters, the much needed golf cart rental, the history of the property, and so much more.
Definitely a five star vacation location and an exciting history lesson all in one.

Paul and Linda- thank you for your kind review! So glad you were able to enjoy everything we have to offer. Strother Scott
The property is fantastic with lots to explore - even in the middle of winter! The lakes, river, golf cart rental, fire pit, swing, etc. all provided the kids with plenty of entertainment. Enhanced internet was excellent - no issues with multiple people working remotely. The historic home of course has some quirks due to its age, but it is very spacious and was very clean. We look forward to our return trip!

Fiona, we were so happy to host you and your family. We are glad you had a good time and we look forward to your return this summer. You will find a few small changes, we hope all are improvements.
We gathered for my parent's 50th anniversary with ages 18 months to 80 years old - there was absolutely something for everyone. The little ones enjoyed the pool, beach, rabbit spotting and running with kite on the expansive lawn. While my parents enjoyed watching it all from the comforts of the sun room and the sun deck. Be sure to arrange naturalist tour and sunset cruise in advance - both a wonderful addition to the holiday.
We enjoyed every minute in our 5x great grandparent's home. Response time to a stove problem was almost immediate. All was resolved quickly and efficiently. We can't wait to come back to Rosegill. The house and views are breathtaking.
What an amazing opportunity to enjoy a historic home in this storied area of our country. There was so much to see and do in the area that we didn't leave much time to enjoy the house! And there's SO MUCH house and property to enjoy! I can only imagine how nice it is in the summer, when you can use the pool, and when the water in the river and lake aren't so cold. Conveniently located close to town, but still private and quiet. The owner and caretaker were both great to work with. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

Terri, thank you for your 5 star review. You really did experience the history of Eastern Virginia on your short visit to Rosegill. Do come back when you have a less crowded agenda and can enjoy the house, pool, beach, long walks, birdwatching at Rosegill Farm.

Our three generation family had a great stay at Rosegill. The historic property is beautiful and you are immediately struck by the huge scale of the property and house. Our communication with the innkeeper and property owner was impressive. We rented both a golf cart and a boat during our visit which I highly recommend. The fishing at the upper lake was fantastic. The house was well provisioned and local restaurants were convenient and our meals were great. Make sure to get some local seafood during your stay. Our family spent a lot of time at the swimming pool which was clean and convenient to the house.

This is our 2nd year at Rosegill and we had an awesome vacation with our family again! Rosegill never disappoints! So much to do for all the different interests among our group...fishing, boating and swimming. We rented a pontoon this year and that was a huge hit...thank you for the suggestion, Martha. Thank you, Scott family, for everything!! Missed seeing Alfred this year...hopefully next time.

Unique and stunning property and home
My family and another family, both with young children, spent a week at Rosegill, and it was an absolutely stunning experience. The historic home was beautiful, yet comfortable, the property allowed for swimming both in the pool and on the beach, kayaking, strolls, bike riding, crabbing, the list goes on and on! The host was kind enough to drive down and introduce himself and make sure we were comfortable, and the caretaker was the kindest and most wonderful woman, making sure we had every need met. The quaint town of Urbanna offers delicious seafood, live music on the weekends, and lovely views of the harbor. We didn't want to leave!

It is fantastic to hear about your stay and how much you made the most of the property and the area. Rosegill is a wonderland for children and we are so happy to have more children join the fun. Thank you for your kind review!
I’ve driven by Rosegill almost all of my life, was born in Urbanna, but never set foot on the property until our vacation. You feel like you’ve stepped back in time with the history and beauty of the home. There were 8 of us so the beautiful dining room table was perfect! Excellent updates in the kitchen with all the amenities you’ll need. We spent the evening by the bonfire, roamed and explored as much of the property as possible and slept peacefully every night. As my family said during our goodbyes, this was the “best property and best family vacation ever”!
Thank you again!

It’s a wonderful story that you were aware of Rosegill your entire life, but had never been here - but when you brought your family to our property for the Oyster Festival weekend, it worked out so well and you all had such a great time. Thank you for all the compliments about the updates we have made over the years. We hope you will choose to return another time. Strother
